View Full Version : Are you hunting this year, if so, with what?

No judgement with people please, I understand there are guys and gals who see hunting different but still enjoy the various aspects of firearms. If someone starts complaining about hunting and talks about worshiping the trees while chanting Gaia, I promise I will edit your post and make you look like less than productive.

For a variety of reasons, I find I don't bird hunt much anymore, the exception being turkey. For deer this year I'll be sticking to my Noveske 300blk for the simple reason that regardless of size, I'm confident of putting them down.

I don't bow hunt, for the primary reason that I don't find my skills to be where I would like them, and I've got far more time on a recurve that I grew up with than on any compound bows.

I wouldn't mind black powder hunting (real cap and ball), but I never seem to get around to it.

All meat taken is eaten.

Post pics of your kills, firearms, or groups if you like.

I'll get a pic up shortly

ETA Here is the pic.

I'm up in the air for Indiana Whitetail this year. The deer population in my area is so low idk if I want to contribute to reducing it even more.

If I do hunt I'll be using my custom built AR in 6.8 SPC with 16in barrel and Leupold 3-9 Patrol.

Buddy and I are using 300 Blks I put together for Whitetail at the ranch.
Using a load with H110 and 110 gr. Barnes BT.
Inexpensive PA 1-6 ACSS scopes with 300 Blk reticle has worked out well.
3.5-4" groups to 250 yds standard with guns/load and field expedient, braced rest should be adequate.

Hunting Cow and Bull elk this year again. In Colorado. Have a private land cow tag for south of Denver metro. Have available 140 acres to hunt. Bull will be on western slope 3rd season. Just got new LR elk rifle dialed in with handloads. Browning xbolt hells Canyon LR with McMillin stock in 300 win. Kahles 624i SKMR3 in FDE. Spuhr rings in FDE. 200gr nosler accubonds. 2960 FPS. 77gr of H1000. Federal brass. CCI magnum primers. 35thou off lands. Rifle is on the right. Has TB CB ultra 7 suppressor.

100 yard zero. First 4 all touching. 5th is upper left. Probably from me as I was nervous I was going to mess up my 1/2 Moa 5 round group and what do ya know. I did.

I think Ill be deadly on an elk through this distance at least. Capable of much more with this rifle but unable to practice further so I will limit my shots to my practice range.

Lots of elk around here, especially on my buddy's property. I doubt either of us will take one, but if so, I won't play around with the 300BLK. It isn't that I think it won't work, but I'll take the extra punch for a cleaner kill personally. Heck, I would probably just grab my grandpappys old 06' that he left me.

Going out tomorrow morning with tags for antlered elk and deer (whitetail or muley), black bear, wolf and mountain lion. Right now I'm using a 2013 Matthews Creed. Later, if unsuccessful, I'll switch to my general purpose 300 WBY/Swaro Z5 combo. I've just started a Dimick-style plains rifle that I hope will be done in time for late-season muzzleloader (antlerless deer and elk this time) in December.

For squirrel this year, fox and bobcat early next year, a CZ 455 varmint in 22lr. I'll continue to hunt yotes with one of my AR's chambered in 223 wylde. If I go deer hunting I'll use the same rifle. 69 grain TMK's seem to do the trick with heart, neck, and head shots on does.

I don't really "trophy" hunt any more. I've killed more than my share of bucks with big antlers. 2 bow kills that would easily make P&Y and a few rifle kills on 140 class bucks. My friends always gave me crap about not having them officially scored. I always felt they were personal victories and didn't. I think the antlers from the bow kills are still in the barn loft at my parents. The others I don't know.

Hunting will be minimal this year. I've got a pheasant hunt coming up next month, I'll use one of my Benelli's.

I "hunt" mostly out of this for much of the year...hunt fish that is....although I plan to hunt some ducks on the river with it soon.

I'll be hunting deer this year in NE Arkansas, and or SW Missouri. Benelli Supernova tactical with remington 1oz 1560fps "slugger" slugs. Longest shot anyone's ever taken in those areas where I'm going is 75 yards. I took a 25 yard shot there 2 years ago. Cannot physically see over 100 at the most due to terrain and so forth. Also, I'll post a picture later today of the shotgun :)

Forgive me for slacking, photo of the shotgun is forthcoming. In the mean time, here is my zero target for 50 yards. 3 shots. Ready for deer!

Single cold-bore shot at 75 yards, 1.4" low just like Remington says it should be with a 50y zero.

Good shooting. How's that Hoyt carbon treating you? A while back I remember talking to you about it but haven't seen any new updates. Looks like your slinging them in there pretty tight. Any group you can grab 3 with one hand is excellent shooting in my book. If you get out to CO with your bow I have some 3D targets out as far as you want to shoot. Oh and nice trophy kill on the counter there. People don't realize how tough that is with a bow.

Early Anterless is 10/19-10/21

Main Firearms for my intensive zone is 11/04-11/19.

Got a nice piece of property I can hunt, about 5 acres or so. Even with my home firing range, we have a good population of bucks with 4-6 points, they don't seem scared off like the first year I was shooting a bunch. I have seen 3-4 button bucks I keep wanting for antlerless. But, also, a good few does.

I haven't invested in trail cams as I just bait with molasses lick on our trees in the front yard and can watch them from the living room window.

I will be breaking out the .30-.30 this year. It was a family heirloom, on my Wife's family side, and none of the hunt anymore. I owe it to them to get a couple with that rifle before I switch to the .300 blkout build I have planned.

This doe was shot last season, .75 grain Speer gold dot.

Walked into woods and was in our spot for 2 min when she walked right out in front of me.

She was bladed at me and I hit here right in the front of the shoulder, it was complete obliterated then moved through the rib cage.

She did not make it far because her lungs were jelly. It was about nine minutes in the woods totally time when I shot her. Very quick!

Taking a suppressed .308 bolt gun out to West Texas this fall, for Sonoran mule deer. I'll be hunting areas where I grew up as a kid. I need something with some reach. A friend out there has a 1000 meters marked off. I'm definitely not planning to shoot half that distance, but would love a chance to get some long range in my book while I have the opportunity.

And since we will be close to the Mexican border, I'll also pack a suppressed 300 BLK with 130-grain TSX rounds as well.

Was the bullet recovered or did it completely penetrate? How far was the shot? Was there a good blood trail? What scope is on your rifle? Thanks!

35 yard shot standing no support

Blood trail was about zero....i thought I had missed at first! I knew i had hit her though, it was very clean. With no exit, the internal damage was quite devastating to the organs.

The scope is a Leupold vxr patrol 3x9 with firedot. It is a fantastic scope, the clarity is very good. I would buy it again. But with all the newer scopes out I might give something else a try.

I have a .270, 6.5x55 Swedish, .300 win mag and .308 (https://lifeundersky.com/best-308-rifle/). I've used all of them for deer and bear in t. Don't recommend the .300 win mag for deer as it's a bit much and more expensive. For what you want I would use my Swedish or .270 but based on ammo availability and price I would recommend the .270. As far as felt recoil with the larger calibers, I personally don't feel it when the adreline is going during the shot. I guess it all depends on how excited you get when you see your target.

For deer and hogs in SC I’ll be using a .300 Blackout carbine that I built. I’ll also have an Armalite AR-10 for longer shots when I’m hunting over peanut fields. I’ll also have a new Ruger SR1911 in 10mm if anything gets close. I took a 160 pound sow with my Glock 20 last year.

We still can’t hunt big game with semi-autos at home in PA so I’ll have a Marlin .45-70 for bear and a new Marlin 1894 in .44 mag for deer.

Have you ever checked out River Ranch on Rt 60? I think you have to be a member or go with a member who owns a parcel. But I know people who have set up there and gotten their fill of shooting hogs. I don’t know if it’s a guided thing or not, but worth a shot if you’re looking for a place to try it out.

Excellent shooting. You will need to shoot different circles on the target to prevent yourself from ruining arrows. I hate shooting the knocks and fletching off my arrows. So now anytime 40 and in, I’m shooting different areas on the bag.

Bagged two deer this weekend using this combo;

1) Spike at ~110yds, one shot kill after 10yd stagger. Squared up right to left, heart & lungs turned to chunky strawberry jelly. Clementine Orange size exit hole through ribs.

2) Doe at ~95yds, one shot kill, DRT. Shot from right rear to front left side behind the shoulder, blew up both lungs, golfball size hole through ribs on way out, lodged inside front left shoulder, breaking it.

Very, very impressed with the Hornady bullets. Destructive.

Mrs Stick was going to use the Elk meat, but went with Venison instead. Yum.

Man, that looks good right now. Follow it with a nice glass of Bourbon and you are living!

I'm going to start a chili recipe thread here in the hunting section.

Please post it over in this section as well, a general recipe thread would be awesome.

A 12 point (Whitetail) my bud shot at the ranch last weekend.
He used a 16" 300 Blk. I put together for him. Ammo was 110 gr. Black Tip with H110- velocity 2400 FPS.
135 yd. running shot at near dark. We had to wait 'til morning to pack it out (can't get vehicles in this area).
You can see he nearly shot the near side antler off, clipping it just above the base.

100 yard zero. First 4 all touching. 5th is upper left. Probably from me as I was nervous I was going to mess up my 1/2 Moa 5 round group and what do ya know. I did.

Here is the 300 yard group.

Here is the 725 group.

I think Ill be deadly on an elk through this distance at least. Capable of much more with this rifle but unable to practice further so I will limit my shots to my practice range.

Good luck with hunt this year. I got nada but will help my hunting buddy on a cow elk tag in Northern AZ.

77grains of H1000 is packing it in. Well done.

I am helping a friend with a cow elk hunt this Friday. We scouted this weekend and saw 4 cows within 200 to 400 yards. Next Friday AM, boom boom.

Filled my Tag in Minnesnowta this year. Smaller than I would have preferred, but it was getting late in the season when Murphy's law kept kicking me down with my gear this year.

Nonetheless, good luck out there guys, I am onto Winter Grouse hunting. Picked up a used Winchester 1200 for my first "Bird Gun". Now, I just gotta hit some Grouse.

First year Bird hunting. Had some troubles and some luck. No dog is the hardest part. But, the winter grouse hunt makes a good reason to get out and enjoy nature.

I got this used, from an estate, for 125. It musta hit bottom of a river at some point in it's life, it was sluggish and gritty when I got it.

After a deep clean, and pulling out a 1" ball of sand, it's smooth as butter.

1980s 28" Steel Proof Barrel with Mod Choke.

I took the wooden cork out as it was building rust inside the cap, but the tube was spotless still and is back to it's proper capacity.
