I can get this Ruger AR-556 MPR for a pretty good deal at $559.99 here: https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/199005

Or I can get the Colt LE6920-OEM2 (no furniture and no A2 front sight version of the 6920). I already have a Magpul CTR Stock, a K2+ Grip, so I just need to get a handguard which I've chosen to be midwest industries SS gen3 12.6inch handguard. Then I will also get a magpul MBUS sight set.

The total for the Colt LE6920 combo came out to be about $950 (see math below) compared to the Ruger Ar556 MPR rifle at $560. Looking at the MPR's specs, it doesn't look bad at all, so I'm wondering whats everybody's opinion on this? I'm fairly new to ARs, but I want a quality first rifle.

$645 for no furniture 6920 + shipping
$180 for the handguard
$55 for the handguard installation from an AR15 armorer
75$ for the Magpul MBUS sight set.

So total for the 6920 would come out to be about ~$950

Google Colt Trooper. Not much more and has furniture.

I did, and the cheapest I can find for that is slightly below $700.

Yes. Much cheaper than the 6920 OEM by the time you outfit it.

Skip the Ruger. Get the Trooper.

I thought you were comparing that to the ruger. I want the handguard that I selected if I go with the colt, and I already have a furniture set for it.

Buying the trooper is getting the Centurion rail, grip, and stock for $50 compared to buying the OEM 6920.

You could always just sell the Centurion rail if you wanted and come out ahead of the game if you really wanted to use the Midwest rail.

If you want a quality rifle, as you said, spend more and get the Colt in whatever configuration you desire. Skip the Ruger

Is there anything different between the Trooper and regular LE6920? It seems suspicious a high value handguard AND a le6920 would be priced lower than a standard le6920

Not that I know of, sometimes Colt just does random stuff to throw people for a loop it seems.

How easy is it to sell the Centurion Handguard? It seems this handguard is specifically made for the trooper with no QD sling slot.

So there is really no catch with Trooper vs regular LE6920? I can't believe they would slap on a high quality handguard and then LOWER the price compared to a regular 6920.

Not too sure about the Trooper vs. 6920, but either choice you'd be leaps and bounds ahead of the Ruger in terms of quality. The Ruger is a decent metal club, but the Colt is something I'd actually bet my life on.

Thank guys for the Colt LE6920-R Trooper recommendation. I ended up ordering the Trooper for $699.95 shipped. I also ordered Magpul CTR Mil-spec stock + Magpul Angled foregrip m-lok + CAA pistol grip + Magpul MBUS backup sight pair all for $164.62. Can't wait to receive and assemble everything together. With the $10 FFL transfer fee, I'm looking at $875.

I already own a Vortex Sparc AR and have a G2X LE flash light with mlok mounts coming next week. I got close to $1100 invested into this Colt LE6920 when all's said and done. Worth it in my opinion. I will be using this for my home defense and range shooting.

Here is where I ordered mine: https://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Colt-Trooper-M4-LE-Carbine-5-56-16-with-M-Lok-Han-p/gun-le6920-r.htm

Does anyone have experience with these guys? They ship for free, and they look legit..

If I could have gotten the trooper for $699, I would have never done the Colt OEM thing.

While I don't disagree - the Colt 6920 is an absolutely incredible value and will do everything anyone on this forum wants to do with an AR15 and blows the Ruger out of the water in every aspect...

...how can you be sure? The OP didn't even mention what his purpose is when asking for a rifle suggestion, a forum rule by the way...

I still say get the 6920. You can run it over with a truck, submerge it in water, stomp on it in mud, throw it out of a tree, and it will be a-ok.

Agreed. My Colt 6920 OEM was like $700 after shipping and FFL fees but fortunately I had furniture at home so it was clean. I would've gotten the trooper however for that price.

I have been waiting a few months for Colt to get my gun back to me from repair and I'm getting impatient. I might buy another one. For those wondering, a 6920 falling down a 1,500 foot high rocky cliff face in Appalachia will cause accuracy issues. Colt will still honor the warranty, however.

Bet you can shoot around corners with it though!

Wait, what? When did that happen and how? Please explain how that one occured. Pics of the rifle after said base jump would be appreciated as well.

Several months ago. It's been with Colt since May. I can show pics but it looks totally normal and I wouldnt be able to for a few days. I wasn't able to figure out what the issue was.

Checked rear sight. removed and reinstalled barrel torqued to spec. Removed, inspected, and reinstalled FH to spec. Check upper and lower for cracks. Checked front sight base/post with no issues. I legit have no idea what happened and the guys at Colt (Specifically Cory in CS) were just as interested to know as I was.

I don't mean to disrupt the thread. I was going to update the 6920 thread when I ran over it with a truck but I've been waiting until I found out what the issue was.

Well, my purpose is pretty general, but biggest is simply for a first ar-15. So gun collecting, home defense, and range time. A mixture of all of those. I want to get the biggest bang for my buck in terms of quality. I think this version of the 6920 does it for me.

Well they always said you marines could tear up anything.

I'll keep an eye out for when you post an update. I am curious what happened now.

anyway on topic, the Trooper is a damn good value. Am tempted myself and I need another AR like I need another set of balls.

I know the colt 6920 has better quality materials over the Ruger, for discussion reasons, is there any reason to have gotten the Ruger ar556 MPR? It does seem the ruger has a better trigger? What about the 5R rifling despite it been 4140?

Negative. Not in that particular case. (IMO)

There might be a few other combinations I'd consider equal, but not at that price.

Hey guys, I got my Colt Trooper M4 today. I installed Magpul angled foregrip, CTR stock, and MBUS backup sights, Vortex Sparc AR, CAA Pistol Grip as soon as I got it home. Other than a few blemishes on the outside of the mag well, it's a nice shiny new Colt LE6920. Once my gun range opens again (was closed due to hurricane Harvey), I am going to go and sight in the backup sights and the red dot.

Beautiful. Every time a new musket finds a home, it makes me love this country even more. God Bless the wise, dead, white guys who bequeathed to us our nation and its great Constitution. God truly blessed America.

My range finally re-opened today after been closed for the past 5 weeks due to Harvey. This was the first time in my life that I've shot an AR-15 and I have to say, I absolutely loved the Colt LE6920 Trooper. It was an absolute blast to shoot. I sighted in my red dot sight to 50 yards. I had a little trouble with that, been a complete noob. The groupings were consistent, but I couldn't zero it to the point of aim perfectly.
