View Full Version : Syrian fighter jet being shot down by a US Navy pilot
That's gonna leave a mark. I wonder if the pilot even knew what hit him or knew he's been lit up. Via SOFREP (https://sofrep.com/90346/heres-video-syrian-fighter-jet-shot-us-navy-pilot-june/):
Here’s the video of the Syrian fighter jet being shot down by a US Navy pilot in June
On Jun. 18, F/A-18E Super Hornet belonging to the VFA-87 “Golden Warriors” and piloted by Lt. Cmdr. Michael “Mob” Tremel,” shot down a Syrian Arab Air Force Su-22 Fitter near the town of Resafa (40 km to the southwest of Raqqa, Syria).

That'll buff out?
Doesn't look like he did any evasive maneuvers ... looked unaware
Guess that's the best way to go

Appears he was very low, perhaps on a bombing run or just finishing one. From the hit to the fireball when it slams into the ground was very short, so I gotta figure pilot was toasty. Either focused on the run or his electronics just not up to detecting the Super Hornet and saw the incoming right around "aw shit" time if he detected it at all. 'Murica.
I don't know much about the Su-22 and I'd expect Syria wouldn't have latest gen stuff anyway.

Double taps today.
I would have liked to heard the audio, the pilot chit-chat.
Good vid.

"Habeeb is down, Splash one habeeb"
"Way to go Mav....now come on home, call the ball, all right!"
"You...are...dangerous, but you can ride my tail anyday."
"Bullshit, you can ride mine"
*hugging intensifies*
And.....I find that the most appropriate response. This has been the first legit Air to Air shootdown in a while, no?
No telling what version this was. It may/may not even have a glass cockpit. The non-glass cockpit versions had downgraded avionics from old Soviet standards. Think of this as a slightly newer F-105.
In terms of difficulty, it's almost like a P-51 vs a Ju-87 in wwII.

I didn't realize how gay Top Gun was until years later, and that music video just makes it even worse. I'm surprised the two dudes don't make out in the end of the video.
Can't wait for the remake. The originals are so old their faces look like they are pulling 4Gs when sitting still.
There are baby seal hunters out there thinking that shoot down was ugly.

The A7 II Corsair in that music vid is soooo badass. Always thought those were cool little birds.

Actually, if you're talking around 0:37 or so, I believe that's an F-8 Crusader.
More pointed nose for supersonic performance.

I qualified for the USAF Stinger program a...few years ago before they shut it down. Aircraft identification was always a hobby of mine, but I had to study that big time before going through the qual testing.
I always had a damn problem with mixing up the SEPECAT Jaguar and IAR-93.

I used to really be into that (aircraft ID), but was a long time ago.
I was fortunate enough that when the Tomcat from "Top Gun" first arrived at the Tulsa museum, it was a small but growing facility. The old man who was there taking donations from visitors, allowed me and a friend...for ten bucks...to get in it and crawl all over the BIG girl.
I have a great Polaroid of it. (Pun fully intended)[emoji14]
I work with the local tech school certifying welders, and the Av School campus has an A7 on site. I was shocked at how small it was. Especially compared to the big Tomcat.

I read the story elsewhere.
The pilot was giving a speech (tailhook?) and said the first missile missed because defensive flares were shot off.
So I wonder if his decoy system failed, or he thought one flare deployment would do the trick?
The speaker also said his wingman observed a parachute deploy.
