Is it possible to securely mount a vertical fore grip without having a rail system? If so, how?

Thanks!

MI would be a good place to start.

I've used the Command Arms SR-B rail.

Mounts right to the lower handguard.
Quick and easy.

Are the bolt on sections of picatinnay (sp?) rail tapered to accomodate the handguards? Would a VFG sit at an angle compared to being perpendicular to the barrell??

Would love to add some rail to my bushy M4'ish, but it's not "mine" per se. Policy limits what I can and can't do to it.

I'm hoping some of the more experienced members will chime in.

I'd love to try using a VFG in the future, but have a standard mid-length handguard. Should I expect any issues using a generic picatinny rail? Are there specific brands that are recommended? I have no plans to purchase a rail system at this time.

It won't help people with midlengths, but it might be a good idea to wait for magpul's MOE handguards. I think they are stronger than standard handguards and should provide a more stable platform for a vfg. Maybe stickman can chime in here since he knows quite a bit about the MOE handguards.
