Big time bummer. I really liked his music.

Supposedly cardiac arrest.

66 is way too young to go.

Roy Orbison must be telling him right now, "Dude, go back. We weren't looking for you this soon."

Part of me actually thought he would live long enough to be the post apocalyotic mayor of Bridge City, Oregon.

Did you read how hard he worked this year (CBS link in first post)?

"Petty played his last show last Monday, performing three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl to conclude their 40th anniversary tour. The band wrote on their website that the tour included 53 shows in 24 states."

At 66, that just might kill 'ya!

"Damn the torpedos" might be the first album I bought with my own money. It was either that or "Get the knack." Got them both about the same time. Played the hell out of Refugee and My Sharona.

I'm not a rabid Tom Petty fan but sure did enjoy his music. I think he went out, knowingly or not, at the end of his career following his last show of what is said to be his last tour ever. The man went out after doing what he loved and what made him famous. I can only hope to be so lucky.

Sometimes I think people die after major events in their lives because they know it's over and don't want to linger in retirement. He will be missed.

Well, that certainly proves he's more than twice the musician than Hendrix, Joplin, or Morrison was. [emoji41]

CBS Erroneously Reports Tom Petty’s Death, Setting Off an Outpouring
By JOHN KOBLINOCT. 2, 2017
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/02/business/media/tom-petty-cardiac-arrest.html

"The news ricocheted around the web immediately: CBS News was reporting that Tom Petty was dead.

"It kicked off widespread reaction and remembrances on Monday, with star singers like John Mayer, Shania Twain and Jon Bon Jovi all paying tribute to Mr. Petty on Twitter.

"It soon emerged, however, that the news was premature.

"When CBS reported Mr. Petty’s death on Twitter, preceded by a capitalized banner “JUST IN,” the network attributed the news to the Los Angeles Police Department. In an article published online, there was no mention of the L.A.P.D., merely the phrase “CBS News has confirmed.” (CBS later deleted the tweet.)"

I saw Petty and the Heartbreakers a few months ago - pretty stellar show from guys at Social Security age. No indication that they are slowing down much by their stage presence.

Hell yeah it is!

A good friend of mine is the lead guitar in a band & they play that song. He just nails it & it gives me goosebumps every time.

We were texting yesterday about this & I told him for a tribute that he needs to put a little extra mustard on that guitar solo at their next gig.

"American Girl" is my favorite. Listen to the words: here is this happy-go-lucky chick living her life, when in the midst of it creeps in a bad memory of the guy she can't have. Death-dealing. First time I really paid attention to the words I was awe-struck. Genius. Like writing a cutesy surf song where someone dies. The contrast is just gut-rending.

Great film, Appaloosa. A buddy of mine supplies horses to the film industry here in New Mexico. Got to watch some of the filming of Appaloosa for several days north of Santa Fe at Palovista Ranch. In the past decade or so have watched several movies being filmed on set, including the remake of 3:10 To Yuma, No Country for Old Men, True Grit and Hell or High Water. Got another buddy who is a GreensKeeper/Greensman for films shot here. Part of his job is to restore any damage to vegetation during the filming.

Another classic rock performer gone, and from another era of Good Music.
RIP Tom Petty

All the good old American rock singers are dying out and nobody is carrying on the torch.

Sad. You know....I can't even think of any real scandals or upsets. He just showed up and played. I wont lie and say I had all his records but he was always on the radio.

Yes sir, Appaloosa and Open Range are probably my two favorite modern Westerns. Ed Harris was taking a horseback trip through Ireland with his family when he read the book and decided to acquire the film rights. Glad he did, just really a phenomenal film. I was pleased to see him use Tom Petty and his old friends in Mudcrutch for the soundtrack. I'm jealous of your buddy, sounds like a sweet gig with some of the prettiest country as your "office" everyday.

Agreed, saw Dwight Yoakam (another one of my favorites) post this yesterday on FB.

A funny story if you know a lot about rock history.

When Tom Petty first came on the scene, a lot of people compared his voice to that of Roger McGuinn.

So, IIRC the hoopla caused Roger McGuinn to seek the limelight and start performing again, or at least revived an interest in his older records.

So I had a buddy that burst in the door one day praising this "new guy" Roger McGuinn because he sounds just like Tom Petty.

Took me the better part of a long conversation to convince him that it's the other way around.

Well I was still in single digits, but I liked it.

To be fair, I liked Elton John's Still Standing video before I realized how gay it was.

As I got to know the artist, this is the one that impressed me the most. While I loved "Won't Back Down", "You Got Lucky" and half a dozen others, "Breakdown" had a sense of groove that most rock artists fail to attain.
