Today I took delivery of a Smith and Wesson M&P15 SBR. The barrel length on this rifle is 14.5". The upper receiver is marked M4and the barrel is marked 5.56 NATO with a 1/7 twist. Not that I'm a fit and finish guy cause I'm not but, the fit and finish on this rifle is very good.

The front sight base is "F" marked.

Also the castle nut is staked.

After looking over the exterior of the rifle I disassembled it to take a look at the internal parts.

I found that the gas key bolts were properly staked.

The bolt is "MP" marked as well.

The extractor spring contains a black extractor buffer and "O" ring.

Due to time I did not get to take a picture of the feed ramps. I will say that they are not what you will see in a Colt however, they are feed ramps and I think they will get the job done.

Hopefully I will get this rifle on the range by the end of the week. Also I will get to wring this rifle out in a couple of weeks during a closed class with Brian Searcy of Tiger Swan.

I will post more after I get it to the range and document more information on this rifle.

I am impressed with what S&W is doing these days.

IMO you shouldn't have to apologize in advance that you found the "fit and finish" to be nice - it SHOULD be nice, and if it is why not mention it?

Just as some people with zero experience get hung up on stupid stuff, sometimes guys that should know better get hung up on stupid stuff on the other side of the spectrum.

I wonder if factory 11.5" is next?

I think the 11.5" is further down the road. Even though I have been told they have another project ahead of the 11.5" rifle.

That's nice. I didn't realize they offered this. I'm glad to see more factory SBRs available. I would definitely consider going that route if an 11.5 was available.

That's a well done Smith. Report back with how it runs hot and dirty.

An 11.5 version would be welcome.

Is it a 14.5 plus pinned and welded, or an NFA item? Also, S&W typically designates its ARs with numbers and letters - 15, 15A, 15T, 15OR, 15R, etc. What is the designation of this model?

This is good news coming out of S&W. It's good to see a company this big really listening to what folks have been asking for.

I'm glad someone posted this too. I bought a S&W MP15T about 2 weeks ago after deciding that I wanted an AR "out of the box" for the first one and researching this website for a few months waiting for a bonus...

I am stoked that Smith has "stepped up," my 15T is the same way, M4 feed ramps, properly staked carrier key and gas block up front, the bolts marked MP and the black buffer oring too. So I actually felt a lot better :D after disassembing it the first time to clean it and finding all the "suprises" considering I was scared I did not pony up for a colt, or buy a Noveski for AR#1 and beleive me, this is just #1 ;).

No. It is an NFA 14.5. S&W showed these in their dealer price sheets for some time, but have not delivered them to recently.

Since this model has the carry handle, it is the model 15.

Thanks! Since it is built to different specs than a regular 15 I thought it might have its own model designation, or did Smith finally switch to 1 in 7 for the whole line?

They do have different SKU's. S&W has not changed their entire line over to 1/7 (just the 14.5's).

since he got the rifle whole and not in peices, how does the NFA part get done? is it still required to get a form 1

Factory built SBRs transfer to your dealer on a Form 3, then to you on a Form 4. You only pay the tax on the Form 4.

Form 1 is only required if you're converting a Title I firearm into an SBR/SBS/etc.

ETA: What is Smith charging for the 14.5" carbines?

The same as their other AR's.

The 14.5" rifle and their version of the Viking Tactics Rifle, review posted here, (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=19807) come with a 1/7 twist barrel.

I like the 14 1/2,especiallly with a 1/7 twist. I have an M&P 15 that's a solid, very nice running little carbine. I may just have to add one of these as a runing mate as long as it's not the heavy barrel,as my Bushmaster was.
I also was not aware they were making this. Thanks for the heads up.
