View Full Version : AUSA 2008 ----- Colt, GD IAR exposed
Colt brought some very interesting concept to the Association of united States Army 2008 annual conference.
Colt IAR entry...
http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ausa/huge/DSCN0962.jpg
This is a very heavy gun compare to the LWRC and the GD Ultimax. also Colt stand apart with a direct gas entry.
The carbine under the IAR is the ACC, Advanced Combat Carbine, it might look like a piston design, but it is actually a DI gas gun with a straight gas tube and the front knob is removeable and you can pull the entire gas tube out of the upper.
http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ausa/huge/DSCN0965.jpg
Looks like the barrel can be quick change via a single bolt ala Robarms XCR.
http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ausa/huge/DSCN0964.jpg
Vltor e-Mod was the only collapsible stock that passed the Marine's drop test.

http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ausa/huge/DSCN0966.jpg
Good stuff, Lee! I'm still disappointed the UBR wasn't available when the USMC drop testing was conducted.
Was the CTR part of that test?
I wonder why colt decided to go with a DI system? On a gun thats supposed to be used i a support role, why would they want something thats going to transfer more heat to the operating parts? I mean, I have no qualms with DI but full auto guns heat up a hell of a lot faster than piston guns.
Colt's Advanced Combat Carbine with the new stock and buffer design, colt was pretty guarded about the buffer design, but from the looks of the short buffer tube, it is definitely a radical departure from what we have seen from Colt... I guess the Colt engineer isn't sitting on the M4 Lure....

This is a interesting concept, a gas tube half way into the handguard and a piston pushing the gas key.
Was the CTR part of that test?
I don't know, to be honest. Those tests are pretty tough on stocks. If the CTR was tested, it likely did not have a rubber buttpad, unlike all newly manufactured CTRs. It certainly did not have a thick rubber buttpad as is available soon for the CTR, and is available on other stocks that were tested. For what it's worth, the first part to fail on the CTR when dropped is the steel pin - not the plastic!

Need I say more? LSAT
http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ausa/huge/DSCN0981.jpg
Close up of the actual LSAT in action in Fort Benning, the qactual firing gun is a lot different than the display gun, but in general, the display gun is the same weight as the real gun.

Cut away of the caseless LSAT ammo along with the case ammo linked in the plastic disintegrating links.
Using the case ammo(shown above, a soldier with 600rds combat pack will deal with only 23.5 lbs of weight, that is gun and ammo included, compare to a sodier currently running the SAW with 600rds at 38LBS. a total of 40% weight reduction and an additional 40% reduction in volume. using the less proven caseless ammo, the reduction of weight further to 19lbs vs the 39lbs prespectively. currently the weapon for case or claseless ammo weigth in at feather weight of 9.8lbs.

Very interesting pictures.
I must admit, the Colt Advanced Combat Carbine concept sort of leaves me scratching my head.
I was expecting a lot more from Colt on the 'IAR....that being said....I really, REALLY like the General Dynamics Ultimax 100 with revised magazine well that will accept a M16 style magazine.
Interesting. LSAT is the most interesting thing there!
the first part to fail on the CTR when dropped is the steel pin - not the plastic!
Wow, I never would have guessed that

Elcan also has something new int he works. this litte 3x optic has a cross hair reticle with illumination that can last up to 3yrs of continous use. the reticle is not as bright as the DR, so it is possible that the illumination can't be sustained under bright sun light.

It takes a CR123 battery in a tube like the Aimpoint M4S
http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ausa/huge/DSCN0973.jpg
Rails on the tube are all plastic, it is there more for the protection of the adjustment covers.
http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ausa/huge/DSCN0974.jpg
http://photos.imageevent.com/smglee/ausa/huge/DSCN0972.jpg
Why are they still using ARMS throw levers and the external adjustment system???
Is that a massive heat sink in the gas block location on the Colt IAR?

SMG LEE,
I thought the Ultimax 100 came from Singapore (didn't Sullivan have something to do with its development?); it was developed at the old Chartered Industries of Singapore. I served in National Service there and during reserve duty, I found out that one of my friends worked for CIS.
Anyway, great pictures and information.

Oh my did they butcher that. I can't believe it. What was the GD engineers thinking. It looks thrown together, were they not thinking. What did they do with the stock and the trigger housing. The front sight redesign is good not as clean as it should be. The Ultimax has been one of my most favorite weapons for years and this looks like a childs toy.
I've been working on a redesign of the Ultimax for fun in my spare time over the last year that fits the militarys requirements and it looks better than that and it would use AR mags and a redesigned version of the Ultimax drum. Plus I added a bunch of other nice features not found on the Ultimax, and my design is still cleaner than that.
