I am picking up a bcm midlength upper and was wondering what buffer weight should I start with in my lower for a 16" midlength upper?

I use the H1 that the lowers come with. Never any issues.

Yeah, it seems most use an H1 there, as do I

I also use an H1. I've used carbine, H1, H2, H3, T2, rifle, and all three weights of JP-SCS buffers in mine without issues. After all of them, I feel that H1 provides the best all-around compromise.

Colt delivers 6920s with an H buffer. They deliver M4s with an H2. Mine runs good with the A5H2. If the BCM has the right size gas port, the buffer you want will be either the H, H2, rifle, or A5H2. Of course, you'll need to also use the right RE for the buffer. You'll need to shoot the rifle to see which one works the best.

I've got a BCM 16" mid length GOV profile with fixed FSB that I've had since 2009. I've XM855, M193, plus all manner of .223 wally world (Federal, REM, WIN,ETC) without an issue that could be attributed to the firearm. So I'd recommend an H buffer. I did initially try a carbine buffer and Remington .223 green box and found that the rifle ejected the brass into parts unknown, but the rifle cycled fine. I've also shot the same upper with a sully stock with included buffer and a rifle buffer and rifle receiver extension when I was stationed in pre SAFE (FUAC) NY.

Also run H2's in 14.5" and 16" BCM uppers. I like the Geissle 42 recoil spring system and simply add a Tungsten weight to their proprietary buffer- to "make" an H2.
Run H3's in 10.5" "pistols".

All lock back on PMC "Bronze"/Wolf Gold- which is wimpiest range ammo I'll run.

When I bought my midlength upper, I emailed BCM customer service, who recommended an H buffer. They were right, the completed rifle is reliable clean or dirty and pleasant to shoot.
