Jack is 15, doing really well although he doesnít hunt anymore, and he has slowed dramatically. Heís been my best friend for more than a third of my life. Eats a diet more expensive than mine.

As to the pic...itís imperfect as I sat there trying to wrangle a 36Ē soft box on a monopod in one hand and my D5 in the other. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190402/803ba91325ee5f932e8f8e3386723c5a.jpg

The bike is a Chang Jiang, they are not expensive as they are high maintainance and too much for most people, ours cost $3000 Canadian but I had to go a long way to collect it. Get one if you can your dog will love you for it, I can hardly keep mine out.

^that is such a cool looking dog.

Tucker has acclimated well. Still struggling with isolation disorder, but working through it.
Smart dog though, he trains quick. Loves belly rubs more than anything else.
Still have no clue what he’s mixed with- part St. Bernard? Fur seems too long for a straight lab and he has thick neck ruffles. Currently a solid 110lbs.

Iíll admit that as I age I have little patience for bratty kids and bratty dogs. My lifestyle precludes me from being a good pet owner so I no longer have a dog. Against my advice my son and his wife picked up an Australian Shepherd pup. Heís 6 months old now and Iíve NEVER been around a better natured and trainable pup. I struggle for the right word to describe him.. heís just amazingly respectful. You only have to tell him once to stop doing something and he gets it. We were replacing the windshield in my semi yesterday and he just had to check it out. First he just jumped up on the tire, then when I went into the cab he hopped up onto the valve cover. His confidence level is off the chart for a dog if his age.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200110/7e8c5df34b68937a4738aa72d805e1c1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200110/cb0337af11fa2597add88b77a7060b63.jpg

I had to fire off rounds this morning, and I'll probably have to shoot a nearby neighbors dogs. The guy has been talked to a few times, and his GSD are over on the property all the time anyway. This morning they were circling livestock and going after a calf. That just isn't going to work.

If anyone has a way to get rid of dogs aside from killing them, I'm all ears. I REALLY do not want to shoot GSD. The coyotes I'll kill on sight though...

The owner has been talked to many times, and I need a pretty decent stand off range to engage. If they kill this calf, I am not going to be a kind individual, and I don't want to be that way with this issue. My better half is urging me to just stay nice about it, but when someone has been talked to a bunch of times, I wonder if shoot, shovel and shutup might not be a better answer. I'm not going to fence in a quarter mile or longer with chain link or chicken wire, and its already barbwired off.

Again, I will point out that I am NOT happy at even the idea of shooting GSD because their owner is an imbecile.

I'd go over, tell him what happened this morning, and that if they are seen near your cattle again, they are fair game.

I'm sure you are familiar with the SO in your AO, have you given any of them a heads up as to what is going on so they aren't surprised if they receive a call from your neighbor mourning his dogs.

Also, have you thought about a pellet gun, with lethal cover? For that matter the paintball gun with lethal cover?

I hate killing most anything, especially dogs, so I hope this works out for the dogs' sake.

Dealing with irresponsible dog owners can be frustrating. When my "nice" reached its limit, I waited till the owner went to work in the morning then I gave the dog away to my wife's co-worker who wanted a Shar Pei. Wonderful dog. Lousy owner. The guy never did get another dog and eventually moved. I figure I did everyone a favor, most importantly the dog.

In an absolutely crazy world, my better half continues to be a saint. She found two feral pups on our property, and of course, that means I now have 5 GSD instead of 3. We have seen the parents and other pups from the litter, and there is no doubt they are GSD. I'm not sure who gets rid of two black GSD, especially if they are pregnant, but we have checked around. Lots of people have seen them, but no one knows where they came from, or can recall when they first started seeing them.

I have never made claims that I was a nice person, but I have a soft spot in my heart for GSD and large breed dogs. They have been to the vet, and are now on shots and eating regularly. One has adapted quickly, the other shows affection, but is still highly paranoid. To show how much of a clownfish I am, I've used my military cold weather sleeping bags and slept in the garage with them. Single digits and teens make for cold weather friends, and the little girls snuggled up.

Its now been a few weeks, and they are responding to their given names. Their weight is up, and they remain super active like puppies should be. When I'm inside the studio, they are allowed access, and they have found they really enjoy snuggling up on an Ethan Allen leather couch with the military poncho liner. Here they are after they decided to play in the mud and water all afternoon.

Thatís awesome! I have a video somewhere of my boy getting up on a chair to get his ball that was put up on a mantel. He then gets back down in reverse instead turning around and jumping down.

Hereís a couple from earlier today. The Mal is just recovering from her TPLO surgery 5 weeks ago. Recovery time is 12 weeks. Trying keeping a Mal down for 12 weeks. Mission impossible!

Itís good you donít know, I didnít until last year when she had the other one done. TPLO is Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy. Itís performed to correct torn or ruptured Cranial Cruciate Ligament. Per my understanding, itís typically genetic and if one goes, the other usually follows on within a year. You get to find out how much you really love your dog because they are not cheap; around $5k including rehab. Add to that you have to keep them separated from other dogs and crated a lot, itís a rough few months. No running, jumping or play time.

I've forked out large chunks of money for damaged dogs, but its usually been knees. Whenever someone asks me, "How can you spend that much on a dog"?! ..... Its an easy answer. Taking out the part of the dog being a functional portion of the household and family, I like to ask them what price they personally put on their own safety or the safety of their house. That tends to change the way they look at "just a dog".

Took my modestly well behaved pooch for a nice walk today, brought a single slice of American cheese to keep her on her best behavior and it worked amazing! That is until we got home, she took a quick drink of water and threw up a large orangish puddle of mucus on the carpet.

That is good way to present it. My dogs arenít protection trained but they definitely are on guard 24/7 and are at a minimum an early warning system.

Kinda funny, I took the boy to find out if he would have any interest in Schutzund. The trainer had dogs and owners formed in a circle and he had a white rag/toy on a rope and dragged it in a circle. We had to hold the dog back from chasing the toy. A bunch of the dogs agitated very easily. Mine? Looked at me like I had just busted out a crack pipe to smoke it in public [emoji1787] and that was the end of that.

On your dog/cow prob: people here swear by donkeys to protect cows/sheep. Lo maint compared to other livestock. If marauding dogs don't get the message, donkeys will kill them for you. Get em younger so they can be acclimated to your dogs. Another plus is they often like to be petted like a dog.... Best.

Sunday was my girlfriendís birthday, so we went to her sisterís farm. We were being very responsible, maintaining distance and so forth. Started shooting some clays, and through my ear pro I hear myself being screamed at. Jack had entered the shop and was consuming a 4oz brick of rat poison...the kind with Bromethalin.

Bromethalin has no antidote or treatment, and is 100% fatal to every mammal on the planet.

We burned rubber to the closest vet and they were able to induce vomiting with apomorphine, and fill him with charcoal, and we believe that we got there in time to get him to throw it up before he digested too much of it. Heís still doing well but will require close attention for a while.

Please be careful and even if you wouldnít dream of placing poison, be proactive and ask if the places you frequent ever do. If we hadnít caught him in the act, we would have driven home, he would have started having seizures, and died a very painful death.

Here we are on the way home. If my uncontrollable sobbing was a clue of anything, I wasnít ready to lose my best friend over the past 16 years. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200428/a5f1bed1f0460837c708dcc14f2c4ba8.jpg

Sorry to hear that. It is never easy. My female Dobe Bella has cancer in her left shoulder. Popped out of nowhere fast. Vet said go see an oncologist and that their would be surgeries, most likely a leg amputation and that still doesn't guarantee a thing. We talked about it and we decided not to go that route. When it's all said and done, it wouldn't be worth it. She isn't in pain at all. She is starting to not eat as much now and is slowly losing weight but is still a happy dog. We are counting the days though.

Well Buckaroo, I just joined you. My Bella passed last night. I had a feeling she was saying goodbye to me on Wednesday night. She rarely climbs up on my lap like my male does, but she was insistent that night and stayed there the whole time staring at me.

She also chose to take the dog bed next to me instead of the one adjacent to it like she usually does last night. My male was trying to wake us up earlier than usual and I guess he was just trying to alert us to her demise. She was laying on the floor as close to my side of the bed as she could be. I cried like a little bitch. Even when you know it's coming, it's hard.

I am glad Jack is ok.

I was looking at trying out a Fila now that kids (more importantly their friends coming over) are not part of the equation anymore. We do have friends that still come over once in awhile so there is still a problem of putting them away in a separate room when they do. My American Bulldog is a handful already, I can't imagine having to deal with an agro full grown Fila.

I believe you. My male Dobe and my female Dobe (passed - still mourning her loss) had totally different running styles. She was a more balanced runner. Even and smooth. He runs with a more powerful rear leg pushing style. Like a male lion runs. He rarely kicks that gear in, but when he does, that extra gear is huge. His balanced sprint cruising gear was enough to run with the female. She would cut the corners to catch him, but the speed was about even. His power top gear would run her down quickly though...scary fast actually...cuz you don't expect it from him until you see it. Not quite Greyhound fast, but damn close.

My last GSD was large, and old age hit him hard. I loved that dog as there was something very special about him. He was more than just a good dog. I talked to my vet, and got him on meds that made a massive difference. We enjoyed an additional 18 months with him, and his quality of life was great during that time. He was happy and healthy once again.

The thing that really got me was that the two or three meds were not expensive at all. Vet proofed was one of the meds, I think I posted what the other once’s are earlier in this thread. I will do this for each of my dogs from now on. There is no need for them to live in pain in their last days, and no reason to put them down early. In my house, I know my pack loves me, and I try to make sure they are loved in return. .

I really appreciate that. They are great dogs and this is my second. We don't have kids, so he is our love for sure. We have him on a couple of meds, CBD oil, Asian herbs, and supplements. We looked into some therapies, but that can get expensive and not sure how much it would help. As you said, we just want him to in less pain and happy, which I think we are providing.

Here is my old man. He is 12+ old GSP. Hips and back are giving him troubles, but he still loves to go for a ride in the truck and let me know about any wildlife in the backyard.

What breed is he?

My wife took this one if our 9yr old. Had him for 1.5yr now and freed (mostly) him of his isolation disorder.

When we got him, he would freak out if you left the room, we can now leave him for 1-2 hours before he starts getting anxious. Heís up to 115lb, getting him back to 110... family lean-up time - haha.

The adventures continue with the wild / feral pups. They enjoys lizards and snakes, but not as much as they enjoy toads and frogs. Even more amazing to me is that they seem to enjoy fishing. The pups will both stand motionless in the water or in the water and reeds and wait for fish, which they then grab. The odd part is that they don't eat the fish, or even bring them back to shore. Its more like they are just sharpening their skills... which I guess they might be doing. Regarding the toads, they kill them, then leave them out in the sun, and the next day or so later they chew on them like beef jerky (frog jerky). Odd, but great little companions.

They are pretty caring beasts and have taken over the property as their own. They interact well with us, but but have an obvious mistrust of people, especially the smaller one. We have been able to get them house trained, though I’m less trusting of them than the other GSD. They are not food dominant, which is rather shocking to me.

Overall, they are doing well.

Thatís great to hear. The food thing is kinda odd all things considered. Then again, dogs are a good judge of character so Iím guessing you and your family put them at ease.

Dogs make me feel at peace as they play and run around. I tend to be wound pretty tight, but a dog with their head in my lap puts me at ease.

Our vet commented that when it comes to the way they eat, it’s probably too heavily engrained in them to change, so even them eating dog feeces and strange things, it’s just part of what they are. He feels the feeces eating is common, and often alters in behavior as they get older, but it’s all up in the air for feral pups.

Guys, if you have an old dog with hip or joint issues, you must try PetLab Co joint care treats. Two stories:
Our 12 year old mini Schnauzer was dragging one leg bad and sleeping like 17 hrs a day. I felt she had 30 days. Started these treats and within the month she was jumping up on the coach. A remarkable difference.

Went over to my buddy’s house, he has a 110lb Golden lab (Doc) that was struggling to walk. I bought him a can of treats he told me he was doing great but didn’t know how good. He went up north for a day with his FIL, upon return he walked into the house and the FIL said Doc is still getting around like a puppy.

They take a long time to ship due to demand and COVID and you can give the suggested dosage for first two weeks or until your buddy is bouncing, then cut in half or a third. When you cut way down, you may see your puppy get worse but bounce right back upon proper dosage.

The shit is unreal.

My American Bulldog Maile filling out nicely. Only 1 yr and 9 months. Solid and super athletic. She gives my male Dobie a run for his money and she isn't fully mature until 3. I didn't know what to expect and what to think of this breed since I had zero experience with them. I have to say they are excellent and will not disappoint. Absolutely fearless. Also very independent, unlike a working class breed dog like my Dobie who is stuck to your side. It's not good or bad...just different. Still very affectionate though. Totally different from what I was used to. They compliment each other well.

Such good doggos! :)

My last dog was a GSD rescue that helped me raise my granddaughter. Truly. He would come fetch me when she started to wake up from her naps, and would sleep in the doorway of her room at night.

"Hey, the little hooman is making weird noises, not the usual noises, you'd better come look."

I know it is really easy to anthropomorphize our pets, but he truly had a sense of humor, and loved that little girl more than life itself.

What breed are your dogs? I cannot tell from the pic, but they look very sweet.

Yes, they all have their little quirks that make you love them each differently then the others.

The black one is a male Doberman (@90lbs). The white one is a female American Bulldog (last I measured was awhile ago - was 65lbs).

Greatest thing about littermates is when you come home to find a half of a tennis ball.

Which dog swallowed the other half? Did they swallow big chunks or tiny pieces? Can whatever dog that swallowed that chunk of missing ball safely pass it?

This is the smallest of the pups, and I doubt she will ever weigh much more than 50lbs. She is one of the two feral dogs my wife abducted / rescued from the wild. I tell my wife she is a dirty dognapper. Anyway, her she is with her one ear up, which is her normal pose.

Cute pup! I don't think I have heard anyone use "Coon" as a serious racial term in over 20 years. "Coon hunting" is very well known to be Racoon hunting, or as I tend to look at it, "pest eradication". When people go hunting the terms Croc, Hippo, and Gator are used instead of the full longer versions.

Before this turns into a cultural rant, I'll just state I have zero problems with it, but at some point forum updates may include filters the board owner and myself have no control over.

Awesome little dog. What do you think about vibrating dog collars for training?

In my experience, a collar should be able to make noise, vibrate, and shock.

That being said, the shock feature is NOT for taking anger out on the dog, but there are times where it can be needed. I'll give a few examples. First was a large GSD/ Great Dane mix who just looked like a large tall GSD with ears that wouldn't stand all the way up. He was a perfect dog in just about every way. At 3 months old (when we got him), loud noises didn't bother or scare him even if right next to him. The first time we lit and threw fireworks he tried to attack them. His issue was a massively high prey drive. If he saw a wild animal, he was after it. If you called him and he heard you, he would stop at a full speed run. Most of the time I don't think he heard or processed anything but the prey. Using the noise and vibration modes had zero effect, and only the shock mode would work, and then he happily came back.

To give another example, this same dog went through a double pane window when deer came up to our back door. I mean through both windows, and how that dog didn't get cut apart is a mystery only the good Lord can answer.

Later on, we picked up our little black female GSD. She is at my side most of the time, but she is another one with a prey drive that is off the charts. Much as the above, she only responds to the shock when she is in full blown attack mode. What is impressive is that in attack work with a person I can call her out.

The shock mode is not all that bad from a people point of view. Among other things, I am a use of force instructor. That includes that Taser Electronic Control Tool. I've been tased over a dozen times, and its not that big of a deal. The dog collar is much much less. Many people have read about my nephews, their martial arts, BJJ, hard training and survival training and other fun stuff. Those boys play hard, and I do mean hard. I told them they each had to take a hit from the collar so they would have an understanding of what was involved. Before you know it, they have it turned to max and are zapping each other laughing and having a great time. It hurts, but it is such a quick jolt that its done and over while you are still processing it.

Yesterday a friend was pulling a stump using his tractor pretty close to the back porch. One of our large GSD loves our friend, and was howling and barking for 20 minutes or so, which he knows is unacceptable behavior. When told to stop, he would not. I put the collar on him, and he stopped the howling. When he started the barking he got the vibration along with a loud firm "no". We were outside for another 45 minutes or so and while he made a little noise, it was not barking or howling.

To sum it all up, there are dogs that will strongly need a training collar. The idea is to use the collar as a training aid. Do not use it as punishment. If you don't understand the difference, there are larger issues at play and I would recommend taking the dog to a trainer or school before you start collar work.

Great question, thanks!

Guessing none of your dogs are titled in anything?

From the USCA rulebook:

15. After the official start of the trial and during the trial, corrective devices may not be used on or within sight of the trial venue (the venue is considered to be all trial fields to include tracking fields, competitor parking or any area within the spectator's sight of the event venue). (i.e.,corrective devices are choke, pinch, electric collars, heeling sticks, etc.) Abuse of these methods my lead to disqualification and / or BOI Charges.

They would laugh you out of there pretty quick if you showed up with any of that sort of stuff on your fido...

Just for the record here - I am not opposed to limited use of things such as pinch collars, shock collars, etc. but I DO believe their use should be limited and one should work to train their way away from their dog 'needing' them to be able to respond accordingly.

The reason why they are not permitted in any sort of competitions or trials is pretty simple - If the dog can't perform without that sort of collar then the dog is not really trained.

My first Rott was a stubborn SOB. But I knew that going in. I took him to a trainer who specialized in German dogs (Schutzhund work in particular) and worked with him for almost a year. He knew every command and hand signal. The problem was he was a punk and decided HE would decide when he felt like obeying. For instance, doing a rolling sit or down command from a heal. He would stop but not execute the command. He would read my inside shoulder and as soon as I turned and was in the process of gathering the lead (giving slack) he would hook the lead with his front paw, put it in his mouth, and go into a play bow for a game of tug of war. It was hard to not laugh at the little fokker. So one day, after many weeks of this, Don (trainer) says hang on. Goes in and comes back out with a prong collar. He says "I really hate using these in general but we need a correction he will respect." Sure enough, 15 minutes with that collar on and that dog was on POINT. Executing commands with extreme enthusiasm. We both laughed because it was like we had a different dog on our hands. He had always shown signs of being capable of this kind of performance but, like I said, he was a punk. Pack order was never in question. I was alpha. But he was the quintessential 14 year old kid who decided he could take on his old man and push the boundaries. I never had to use the prong collar with him after that day but it was always on hand. That was 25 years ago.

A few months ago my father in law adopted a retired SCH3 regional champion GSD. She spends a lot of time at our house and has bonded with our daughter. She is slowly learning how to DOG as her life up to this point was all business. She uses an electronic collar. It is rarely needed but for those times when you need to break her target lock it works to get her attention and break her focus. She likes to kill squirrels. We don't like to clean up the mess but we applaud her vigilance in keeping the yard free of domestic terrorists. So it gets used to disrupt her prey drive when appropriate.

There has been a parade of both GSDs and Rotts through our door from that first one, 25 years ago, to this current fur missile. All of them have had different personalities, temperaments and idiosyncrasies. They key has always been to understand each dog and figure out what works and doesn't work for that dog. While working towards the same end goal; a well adjusted and happy dog that knows its place in the pack and what is expected of it.

Thanks. She obviously gets her looks from her Mother.

My wife and I met walking our dogs. Me my first Rottie puppy and she her Dad's GSD. I think they were both around 6 months old at the time. Her Dad and I lived in the same development back then and she would come over and walk Major every day after work. He was a social misfit but loved Deacon. That started a relationship that has lasted 25 years and has included, and still includes, many a German dog. When I look back on all the good and the bad that happened over that timeframe each memory includes a dog. Coming home from the hospital after my daughter was born I brought her birthing cap with me and let each of the pups get a good whiff of her scent. After that they guarded her like the new member of the pack she was. One would sleep next to her crib, while the other across the door to her nursery. We never really needed a baby monitor. If she stirred one of them would wake us. So when each of them passes, I recall those good memories. And it makes the pain seem worth it on some level. I say that the end is when the bill comes due for that lifetime of loyalty and unconditional love they gave us. I can't imagine a life without dogs.

Livestock Guardian Dog -

We were told he was a Great Pyrenees, but my better half believes he is mixed with Anatolian Sheppard based on the mask. If he is a mix of those two things, that would make it exactly what my wife has been looking for. However, even if he is a full blood Great Pyrenees, that is great in my book. We wanted an outside dog that didn't care about the weather. This means we need to get another ten acres or so of property fenced in (or more), but that is all good stuff.
