Got a dog? Pics, info, breeding, food, training, or anything else you want to share about them goes in this thread.

Our youngest GSD is 3, she is all black, but has started to get a little tan on the rear of her legs by her paws. For people who love the GSD, it is really clear to us how much different the females are than the males. I have always read that the females focus more on people and the males focus more on property. I never personally understood that until we picked up our first female after always having males. They are quite unique, though very much GSD.

We keep our dogs lean, and feed them good food (I just blanked on the name but will update). We do NOT feed our dogs people food, but will on occasion throw in deer meat or raw egg mixed in with their food.

The dogs are trained, and while a lot of people may disagree, a crate is used for a long time, and a shock collar used as well. The prey drive is too high to not use a collar, never to torture, but to break their concentration on the recall command if they decline to listen. A dog that won't come when called is a liability, even if it is because the dog saw an animal to chase.

Not sure of her provenance, she’s a rescue that may be part ridgeback / pit mix.

I keep Whippets. Beautiful, graceful, high velocity creatures that are my pals, but are otherwise not particularly useful.

They provide me with much needed comic relief and hog up more than their share of the bed. I like 'em.

I got him as a present. He was a rescue puppy about 10 weeks old. I've had him for 5 years now and he's absolutely the coolest little dog, any dog, that I've had. Totally calm, not aggressive, low maintenance, quick learner but stubborn. He did destroy my couches when he was around 6 months old. Otherwise a totally awesome little dude

I've been going through this for awhile. Talk with your vet, mine is awesome, and explain what is going on and that you want to develop a plan for your pup as he ages.

My older GSD is 13 years old, is a lean 100lbs, and is towards the end, here is his regiment. Take this in to your doc, none of these meds are overly expensive, which makes it an easy choice.

Carprofen- 75mg every 12 hrs. It provides day-to-day treatment for pain and inflammation from various kinds of joint pain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carprofen

Gabapentin- 300mg every 12hrs. It is recommended as one of a number of first line medications for the treatment of neuropathic pain. If the hips and back are super bad, he is probably at the point of nerve pain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabapentin

Tramadol- 1-2 30mg tablets every 12hrs. Tramadol is a synethic opioid. Tramadol is used primarily to treat mild–severe pain, both acute and chronic. Tramadol is considered similar to morphine, and is probably not something you are going to be using all the time with your pup until he is near the end. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tramadol

Thanks very much, Stick, I really appreciate the advice.

I have no idea how old he is. He was abandoned and left to die in a backyard after the homeowners were evicted. I found him and nursed him back to health. He's a big silly goofball, and incredibly loyal.

The OTC stuff we started with is not strong enough anymore, and this Rx regime should be very helpful.

Thanks again.

You are very welcome. A GOOD dog is a serious part of the team, and it isn't easy as they get towards the end of their life. The Gabapentin and Carprofen should be pretty noticeable. The Tramadol was noticeable, but in general it has been a slow painful downward spiral. He is still happy and alert, though not the same as he used to be. Much of the time is spent on the leather couch now or on thick carpeting. Its hard for him to get up, and at times his hips give out.

Mrs Stick and I both agree that while he has a decent quality of life, he won't get put down. When the pain becomes a higher counter balance to his QOL, (on a regular basis) it will be time.

In talking with our vet, this is functionally, and realistically the last of what can be done. I don't have money to spend just for the sake of spending it, but the above has not only been low cost, but it has been highly effective. I told the vet I would like to see if we could get an extra 3 or 4 months with him, and we have happily exceeded that. The difference is large.

We did OTC, but having an actual pain management program made all the difference in the world. Please keep me posted!

The rescue agency was me. I was walking my Black Lab years ago, and heard a barely audible whimper on the other side of a back yard fence. I thought it was a child who had been injured playing in the yard of an abandoned home. Instead it was my new best friend, Bubba.

He was down to 44 pounds, and had apparently survived on bugs, rodents and rainwater. The doctors at the vet hospital wanted to put him down, saying there was no way he would recover.

I took a week off from work, giving him IV fluids for three days. After four days he could stand, and after a week he could walk. That was about three and a half years ago.

He's back up to 92 pounds, and is inseparable. He's my best friend.

https://i.imgur.com/6JjlcLk.jpg

He either sleeps at the foot of my bed every night, or in doorway to the guest room when my granddaughter is in my home.

Like all of us, past injuries and medical history is catching up with him. He's not as spry as he used to be. But still inseparable.

“It’s time to punch out, let’s go get a taco!”

This is Hank E. Panky. Black lab. I forget the name of the ones with the slightly longer fur, but that’s what he’s got.

He’s a happy dog who always wants to party or snooze on your lap. He loves the mountains, hikes, off roading, jumping in every dirty mud puddle possible, and doesn’t mind laying in the back of my 4runner when I blast my m4gery at a steel target. He also used to love being put in my backpack with his head popping out and going trail rides with me on my dirt bike.

He knows the basic training bits along with the somewhat more advanced “army crawl”

He’s good at laying around the garage while I’m tinkering on whatever and loves listening to music. He’s been known to howl along to Waylon Jennings.

Here’s a few more of the young doge.

Ive had the good fortune of working with a number of awesome Military Working Dogs over the years, and one of them in particular, Troll came home with me after our last tour to Afghanistan. Without going into too much detail this guy kept me safe throughout the tour and saved a lot of lives finding IEDs and locating insurgents and hostile actors.

He is doing awesome! Has recovered fully and has great mobility. He still has some muscle loss and atrophy from the injury, but in typical Dutchie fashion he can clear a 6 foot fence without touching it. Still loves to bite and search and enjoys more that he doesn't have to. He eats steak or chicken at least once a week now and is enjoying the retired life. I can say without a doubt he saved my life more times than I can count.

Here is Cheyenne enjoying herself in the snow for the very first time!! Being how we are in south east Mississippi (within 3 hrs of New Orleans, MS Gulf Coast & Mobile, AL.) this was a rare happening. We got right at five inches on December 8th. We didn't know how she would react to the snow, but she absolutely loved it!! It was like watching a kid play in the snow for the first time, lol!!

But still inseparable.

bless you

I am sorry for your loss Stick it is never easy.

At the end of the day you are dead on, its about the life they lived and if we do our part as their companion it makes the loss easier.

We have a saying around our house, "We never wait for commercials." When my wife and I would be watching a show on TV in our lengthy 15 minutes of free time, if Dozer (my blue boy) would stick his snout in the way to get some pets we used to pause the show and just spend time with him until he crawled up on the couch and passed out instead of "waiting for a commercial" to give him some attention. By doing that I know that we spent every amount of feasible time with him that we could and he knew he had it made.

The black female GSD is like a guardian angel for me. While she was never trained as a service dog, she fills that roll and then some. She rarely leaves my side, and I've been injured (bloody concussion) where she has had to go get help for me. She is a wonderful girl. Calling her a dog feels like a put down.

When I leave the house, she feels highly disgusted.

He was a shelter rescue a couple weeks from being put down at 10yr old.
My wife fell in love with his pic online, so we checked him out.
He was the most laid-back black lab ive ever met - all he wants in life is to get pet.
We were the first people to have any interest in him and ended up picking him up the next day (had to get neutered).

Brandy is kinda special to me. She's not just a family pet. She's my PTSD & TBI service dog. Normally she's at work and vested up like in this shot outside my niece's wedding. I sometimes forget she what she looks like without it.

https://i.imgur.com/YZ7GWY1.jpg

That shot of her with the tennis ball was taken at my in-laws the other night while playing, and waiting for supper. Somehow, everything came out right for a camera phone shot, and I really like it. I made a National Dog Day poster out of it. National Dog Day is still almost 4 months out, (Aug 26th) but I'd like to ask everyone to share it on every medium they are on with the words "National Dog Day". I think it would be cool if come Aug, people search "National Dog Day" and Brandy's photo comes up in the results. Thanks.

I bought my wife a nice Canon 80D but really don't know how to use it and she doesn't bring it out in the yard to get the dogs. Maybe I will bug her to start doing that. The trampling part is definitely a part of it. When she is on the floor she is very diligent on making sure she is out of the way and will scramble to do so. Especially now with the male Dobie. He is at the age where he hasn't quite got his manners down pat when stepping on things or people. The classic bull in a china shop. He will go from totally relaxed on your lap to bolting to the front door if something needs to be checked out and will have no problems using your nuts as a starting block. Ask me how I know. :)

The female used to be like that at his age but has "calmed" down a lot and is now careful where she steps.

Luna(tic) - Chocolate Lab - Daschund mix.

The "how" of this breed mix falls under: Don't Ask; Don't Tell.

Seeing as we have no idea either, it's a crazy mix.

She is very tubular and muscular. Very speedy, but has a pretty amped up demeanor.

I would love to use her for hunting, as she pointed very well from the time we got her, but she just can't handle the noise/reactionaries that come with the sport.

She's a great pet, loyal, loved. But, most of all, she still helps corral the chickens when we need her too.

Yes... That is a sweater in the second picture. Yes, my wife won that battle. All about picking and choosing which ones are worth losing.

I recently got a German Shepherd.

I named him Stickman.

No fooling.

I get to call Stickman a dumbass, tell him to get over here, and he obeys me like a bitch.

It’s amazing.

Next I think I’ll get a Yorkie and name him Moose-Knuckle and immediately put him down for being a terrible pox on humanity.

I’m so disturbed!!!!!!!!!!!

This was my GSD, Buster. I rescued him at a party I was at when I was a teenager. I went out front to take a leak and damn near pissed on him in a bush! He was maybe 10 weeks old. He made it 1 month shy of 16 before everything that was his was allowed to be mine again.

Dude has lost his marbles.

Its pretty clear there are issues that he is facing, and not doing well with. While the easy answer is to call him names, try to start an insult contest, or other typical internet blather, I can post that I feel embarrassed and bad for him. Whatever medical or internal struggles he has, I hope he is able to face them and do his best. While it isn't popular in todays PC age, I would hope he forms a relationship with God and prays. People who don't believe in God refer to it in the wording of
"reflective meditation". In any case, I've had people try to kill me plenty of times, someone trolling on the internet is minimal at best.

Thanks. Wonderful happy dog. Pug/Beagle mix.

Wife found Pugsters at a pet store in the mall (I don't think those hardly exist anymore). Anyway... they had all purebred dogs priced around $500-$600. Wife shows me Pugsters and tells me she's a Pug/Beagle mix. I thought to myself how lucky can I get! It's the only mutt in this place... I'll get out of here cheap. So... while the wife is wandering around the store looking at puppy toys and all that, I'm at the counter doing paperwork. The cashier says- "That'll be $1,100.00". Confident there had to be some type of mixup I asked- "I got the Pug/Beagle mutt, right?". The cashier answers- "Yes, it's a Puggle designer dog". Designer what!?! I'm about ready to tell em they can keep their designer dog when I see the wife approaching and cuddling Pugsters. Hmmmm.... I quickly calculated that $1,100.00 will be a lot cheaper than losing the house and paying alimony. That's my 'designer dog' story.

This was the result of my 18 month-old GSD chasing his 4 month-old playmate around the backyard.

53478

He lets her run and get a little ahead then chases after her. This time she ran around our trampoline and he cut under the trampoline to head her off. He got hung up on two of the bolts holding one leg of the trampoline enclosure onto the trampoline frame.

I was getting ready to leave on a three-day motorcycle trip but cancelled my plans since calming the wife down, getting him to the vet, making sure he woke up after, and then taking down the trampoline (our girls are grown) took the rest of the day.

Don't go crazy, but check your dog's play area for hazards. After this happened I took a quick look around and found several other things that could have snagged them, all were easily corrected.

I'm upset I hadn't done so earlier, although I doubt I would have considered those particular bolts a hazard.

No doubt about it, pups will get into anything and everything. Human eye height matters little, you need to get down low to see what those critters will get into.

The dogs are trained, and while a lot of people may disagree, a crate is used for a long time, and a shock collar (http://www.dogcollarzone.com/garmin-delta-sport-xc-review/) used as well. The prey drive is too high to not use a collar, never to torture, but to break their concentration on the recall command if they decline to listen. A dog that won't come when called is a liability, even if it is because the dog saw an animal to chase.

Dasequin can help quite a bit if you’re not already using it. It’s hard for older dogs though, we had surgery done on ours when he was four and it worked out really well but it would’ve been pretty rough on an older dog.

I totally missed this question, there is a lot which can be done, and it can be done very cheaply. I know for the GSD we had to put down recently, it highly increased his quality of life for an extra 12 months or so.

Karma's dad is a beast sized GSD, and phenomenal temperament. My pup was super dark, and has drastically changed coat color.

If you aren't taking pics on a regular basis, you won't see the change. They grow so fast it is crazy, and the intelligence level is fantastic.

And bless you for taking care of a senior dog, they frequently have earned a little kindness.

That is a fact. There are very few excuses for the betrayal of getting rid of an older dog who has loved and been loyal.... sad days.

Megademic, thanks for the pic. I don't think he's got Ridgeback in him.

But he still looks like a big sweetheart. Be sure and give him some ear scritches from all of us. :)

Just came across this pic of my late old bud:
I thought this was one of the better pictures i took of him from a photography standpoint (lighting looks pretty good and brings out detail, its slightly edited as well).

How was he?

There are few things I like more, than sitting on the porch and giving ear scritches to good dogs.

He was 10 when we got him, laid back but had some food aggression and marking we had to work through.
Ended up being a very well-tempered dog that all the neighbors loved. He had some of the softest fur I ever felt so everyone loved petting him, and that's all he wanted in life, haha.
Not the smartest dog, and not very receptive to task training (never got him to "sit") but picked up behavioral stuff very well.

Just a laid back dog that wanted some attention (previous owners kept him in a kennel in the back yard his whole life).

Edit: sorry for rambling: pic thread.

Well, we have added another to the family. Not a Dobe this time though, she's an American Bulldog.

My wife works at the VA in the Dental department. She lost her son in Fallujah in Nov, 2004 (Marines) - my stepson. He was a great kid. This time of the year is always hard for her. So while she was talking to a patient, I guess the topic came up and the vet asked if he could give her a puppy to honor her son....and here we are.

She is a rambunctious sob, I tell you that much, even for 6 weeks old. I would have wanted to wait until 8 weeks , but the mother started losing interest in taking care of them and they were already being weaned. I had to make sure it was a female, a male Dobe and another male is bad juju. So is a male American Bulldog and another male.

Our Siberian telling the wife about her long day.

She is our cancer survivor, she had a 1lb malignant tumor removed from her belly last spring. First two vets would not operate gave her a couple months to live at best. Finally our horse vet with an assist from a small animal vet removed it. Been eight months and no sign of it returning anywhere in her body. She is healthier and has more energy that ever before. Dog loves to run.

I always prefer to work with large animal vets even when my dogs are the patient. Much more down to earth and reasonable. Glad to hear she is doing well!

No 100% Rottweiler. His name is Jack.

Wife grew up with Rottweilers, her late grandmother had several of them. There was no talking her out of it, and this little guy followed my toddler son around like Velcro. So he got the nod.

Rottweilers are great dogs. I'm sure your son and Jack will have fun growing up together.

My eldest had a Rottweiller when he got married and Max was great with the kids as they grew up.

My wife’s memories of her best friend growing up are strong. A male Rottweiler named Deacon was her best friend when she was about 5 years old. Dog would wait for her to get to her grandparents house after school.

We have an original oil painting of that dog by her uncle on the living room wall. He’s a professional artist, mostly does wildlife and gun dog artwork, so it is no amateur work.

Now it’s up to us to raise a healthy, well behaved, outgoing Rottweiler. So he can live up to his potential and be a good member of the family.

I had a rescue Rottweiler that I got when he was 2 years old, we think. He'd been tied up outside a drug house in Houston all his life. He turned out to be a wonderful dog, and a Very Good Boy.

I'm with austinN4. One of my favorite things is to sit with my 7-year-old granddaughter on the couch. We watch Youtube clips of puppies on the TV, and enjoy root beer floats.

Definitely makes Paw-Paw smile, every time.

Kind of a little veer from the last several posts.

I have two virtually identical GSD's out of different bloodlines. The male is going to be 2 in a week. The female is just about 8 months and has not had her first heat cycle.

When I saw the female, I jokingly asked my wife if she wanted a girl for her, and she said yes, so we drove a couple hundred miles and bought Rebel (aka 'Green Collar' at the breeder's.

A couple month's later when the boy (Reno) first hiked his leg and marked on the vacuum cleaner, I told my wife 'time to go to the vet and get ol' Reno tutored.' At that point I found out my darling wife wanted to raise at least one litter.

Soooo....has anyone had the wonderful experience of keeping their male away from a female while both are in the house? I bred Boxers for a couple of years, my male was a house dog, and when any of the bitches were in heat I just locked them out of their runs into their boxes when I needed to let him out. Unfortunately, when I got out of that game I tore down the kennels and used the slab for a shop building.

This is further complicated by the fact that my darling wife doesn't want me to kennel Reno outside in the 10x10 kennel we take camping.

Advice? The wife has to stay, so that is out, plus last I looked she has my man parts in her purse.

Oh man, good luck with that. I had to deal with that situation with Miniature Longhaired Dachshunds. It was not a fun time to say the least. He barked all night. I can't imagine dealing with this on a bigger scale.

As soon as our female American Bulldog gets of age she is going to get fixed. My 2 1/2 yr old male Dobe is not neutered and he can be a handful already. I can't imagine him being on a hormone trip. No thanks.
