Too cool! Gerber BMF was the first knife I bought after boot... still have several old Gerbers in the safe, no pics though.

Yeah I remember that BMF depending on when you got one had a slightly different blade profile and size.
The LMF has a weird handle everyone hated.

The TAC II has the cool sheath with retention lock.

This was an era when guys did stuff like got a Buckmaster and bent the prongs using it as an anchor rappelling down the side of the barracks.

The best folder ever- the Buck 110. Although still for sale not part of the tacticool club. Mine is 30+ years old and will still shave the hair off my arm.

About 25 years ago when I was in ROTC I had a really nice E.K. Commando that I really liked. Somehow it sprouted legs and walked off. Sadly you don't see E.K. knives much anymore.

I've still got an original Blackjack HALO that was carried on my old SWAT vest for 15 years. I recently sold an original, new Blackjack Combat Kukri. The price was too much and I wouldn't use it anyway. Over the years in the woods I usually had the old Cold Steel S.S. Kukris. Still have one of those.

Pretty sweet collection, They kind of look like old dive knives. What is the make/model of the middle one.

A while back I saw a one of a kind Glesser Knife & Tool prototype folding knife designed by Al Mar on Ebay. That knife had like 100+ bids and was already up to $3400 with 2 days left. Sal Glesser is the founder of Spyderco.

That's the one we're talking about - Gerber BMF

Top is Gerber TAC 2.
You used to see the MK I and II a lot as well.

Middle is early BMF. Plain or saw toothed they were a touch shorter than later ones.

Bottom is later 80s BMF. Plain or saw toothed they were a touch bigger.

My most used and abused was actually a KABAR.
The big conundrum was to spend 40 bucks on a real one, or there was a 20 or 30 dollar camellius version I believe.

A new ranger was looking at about 800 bucks a month after taxes. Figure half that gone for car and insurance.
Then most of the rest spent on dates, alcohol, etc.

I think BMFs and zbuckmasters, etc. were three or four times as much as a real KaBar. And the KaBar would dig cat holes, hammer stuff, chop stuff, and cut stuff fine.

I would say a KaBar or the smaller survival issue knife, a Seiko Diver, and a pocket Swiss Army knife (until the leatherman came out) were ten times as common as the more expensive knives, roleses, etc.

It was an EVENT when someone got a BMF or Buckmaster let alone a Randall. We literally huddled around and oohed and awed at the unwrapping. I bought my first BMF used off a guy I grew up as a 60 gunner with and spent some time as roommates when we were new team leaders. He was getting married. He died a few years later. I bumped into one young ranger who was the son of another guy I had been in the same platoon with. I kept hoping I would run into his son and I could give him the knife.

I’m getting old.

Those cheap Rambo knives from the 80's.

My brother and I each had one, carried them everywhere when we were kids.

They make a factory 110 Auto now.

I can't remember but was the Gerber BMF used in any 80's movies. I seem to recall looking through an issue of my dad's Combat Knives (or some other blade rag) that did a cover story on them back in the day.

I have one maybe that old, duller than Hillary's sense of humor....

The old Gerbers are such classics.

I have an EK Commando with a wooden handle. I carried it in the Gulf as a young Marine. I had a Gerber BMF but it was stolen, the EK took it's place.

Tom Berenger had a Gerber BMF in "Shoot to kill" (1988)
IIRC one of the bad guys had a Gerber BMF in the "The Rock" - "I'm gonna gut you boy" guy. I think (1996)

Damn, now those EK's were sexy blades. I remember they made the cover / feature article of one of those 80's knife rags as well.

Moose my EK was an inexpensive version. It didn't have the highly polished blade and wood. It was more of a parkarized finish. I'll have to dig it out when I get home.

I remember getting a sheaf like that when thenleather KaBar one wore out.

Speaking of that,
The BMF sheaths are hell on making the knives rust. Not new. But something about how the become oxidase as the material ages.

Pacific Cutlery (balisong era, pre Benchmade) Fer-de-Lance by David Steele
http://www.adamsknifeworks.com/store/images/images/pcc-ferdelance(large).gif

I tossed the boxes, but still have two of these. One is in a more modern sheath.

Impractical, looks a bit odd, but just feels right. One I've used more, and I've thought about doing some kind of grippier coating on the scales.

Also still have my Gerber Mk1 from the 70s. Carried it as a college kid everywhere in downtown Atlanta. Luckily I never had to use it... Probably would have been cut!

USAF Survival knife, also from the 70s. (Ontario?) Wanna say it was $7 surplus new at a gun show.

And a pair of Mauser and Enfield bayonets my brother bought out of a barrel for a couple bucks each from an old surplus store on Peachtree. Run by a pair of Jewish brother's, old school shop keepers.

Have since added other bayos to the mix (cetme/M16 issue/Swiss???)

Those used to come with your issued tools in a GP mechanics tool set. Actually an inexpensive knife but they sharpen well and were very handy for the can and bottle opener.
An older G.I. showed me just how sharp you could get the knife that comes with your mess kit, he did a hell of a job on it. he had the handle wrapped with 550 cord under some 100 mph tape.

Top is my first real knife, a Buck 110 from the mid-late eighties, maybe from my first deer hunt? Next two are from my dad a few years ago- a Schrade 735 mariner’s knife and a Ka-Bar x11/77. I didn’t know much about these knives, but they seem to have some collector value. Bottom is an old set of Buck knives. Again, a hand me down from my dad, maybe 10-15 years ago.

That Ka-bar dogs head folding hunter is very cool. And yes collectors like them. Not super expensive, but sought after nonetheless.

A few of my old ones. The Schrade USA on top has skinned more deer than many people have seen, got it for Christmas as a very young boy. The USMC Camp knife, I bought at the 2005 NRA Show in Houston TX from the hands of the man who owned the company at the time, possibly the last owner I think? Said he had a warehouse full of them, with the USMC ones being the least common. The double bladed Frontier knife was my dads, also skinned its share of critters, and is absolutely razor sharp and a very high quality knife.

That auto buck is a thing of beauty.
I went away from that style of knife because of two handing opening.
I have been using benchmade/Emerson folders for decades because I flick them open.
(Not a huge auto fan)

CJ Buck in the video was fresh out of college when he got with Phrobis and the Buckmaster was produced.
I always wanted a Phrobis bayonet, Buckmaster, and beretta slide to go together.

I think he is a man born into a company/job that he has his heart in it.

I don't have pics of it, but I have an old Ka-Bar copy of a Buck 110. IIRC my dad gave it to me and I remember years later pulling it out of my knife box and doing a double take when I read the name of the manufacturer on the blade. Looks just like a Buck with the exceptions of some serrations on the spine to aid in grip purchase.

I've been meaning to snap a few pics of it with an old school Everyready flashlight I got an add them to the EDC light and knife thread.

My brother in law found this Buck 112. Some idiot ground on it with something to try to sharpen it. It's tough to see because it was a quick picture that he sent me but it was full of gouges on the edge and it wasn't even at all. I didn't think it had a chance.

https://i.imgur.com/3c01ldc.jpg

I decided to take a crack at it anyway. I put in a few hours on the Edge Pro Apex.

I have to say this blade design is awesome for sharpening on the Edge Pro. The grinds on my Benchmades can be a real pain in the ass to keep steady on it, but old school Buck folders are a pleasure.
