IIRC, they used to be reversed. Now it looks like they have the proper slot orientation:

No, they did not; the KeyMod-like orientation is how H&K Oberndorf has always done HKey, while the reverse-KeyMod-like orientation is how H&K USA does MRS (Modular Rail System); you can see how the CR556's handguard still uses the reverse orientation. I'm not sure as to the exact dimensional difference between KeyMod and HKey, and if HKey is different from MRS besides the orientation issue.

No, they did not;

Are you certain about that? Or are they using up old stock while the new rails have the newly implemented changes already made.

'Fixing it' would be making it go away... and no, they haven't fixed it.

No. But I've never seen anything from H&K Oberndorf with the reverse-type orientation; HKey has always had the KeyMod-like orientation. For example, this picture from AUSA 2015

I've only seen the reverse-type orientation on H&K USA guns; I've only seen the normal orientation on the H&K Oberndorf. The MRS handguards have been around since 2014, and have never been official described as HKey, only as "keyhole attachment system"; the slim-line handguards with HKey have been seen publically since 2015, with filing of the trademark occuring 2014-05-27. So I'm not convinced it's an issue of using up old stock, but I will admit that it's nothing more than an educated guess (I am an H&K fanboy, after all). Either way, HKey is not something new.

The tender for the new Bundeswehr [German Army] assault rifle says "no ITAR products". So the rumors are that H&K choose the different design with the possibility of keymod beeing ITAR.

I cannot find any information that confirm that the design of kemod is restricted, only for M-LOK "The M-LOK T-Nut is currently under review by the US State Dept to determine its ITAR." (https://www.magpul.com/Admin/Public/Download.aspx?file=Files%2FFiles%2FPDF%2FPropaganda%2FM-LOK_2015_FAQs.pdf)

So, does anyone know if Keymod may fall under ITAR or that there have been the possibility back in 2015 that State Dept would make it ITAR?

That makes no sense. Everything STANAG is ITAR I bet.

Keymod is not ITAR to the best of my knowledge. The dimension etc. was already public whereas MLOK's wasn't.

Apparently that's why foreign manufacturers took a while to adopt MLOK.
