View Full Version : What's wrong?
Had a neighboring LE agency bring me an AR, saying it won't cycle. acts like a single shot rifle. Hmmmmm wonder what that could be......
See anything wrong? Pretty easy eh?

Broken carrier key bolt or it's loose, thus a leaking carrier key that looks like it was staked by a spider monkey with a marshmallow hammer?

Looks like Bushmaster but it's hard to tell without seeing more views of the bolt and complete carrier.
Last qualification I had 2 officers with the same problem. Both had Bushmaster AR's.
Of the last 6 Bushmaster that I had purchased from 2002 - 2006, ALL 6 bolt carriers had to be returned to Bushmaster for improperly staked gas keys.
Each of the 6 carriers wasn't returned until AFTER it started having cycling problems. Most developed cycling problems between 400 and 700 rounds.
My guess would be Bushmaster, the staking jobs have changed a little over the years, but one of the bolt carriers had simular staking marks.

My personal Bushmaster, along with the three dept Bushmaster rifles we have are all staked properly.
Any manufacturer can and will have quality control issues.

But with BM, it seems to be the norm to have improperly staked gas keys. That's not a quality control issue, that's a lazy manufacturer.

Love it :D

"Properly" is subject to definition. Can you add pics of yours to the running thread with same? There's quite a compilation going.

For some, certain issues are trends and norms. Finding a BM with good staking is quite an exception.

Oh boy, I can see where this is going....
Like some of the above posters have stated, in your case its the exception not the rule !!
You are correct and that may be true. But with Bushamster it isn't a problem. It is an epidemic and it is the rule not the exception with them.

Got any pics? Most people are not aware of what proper staking looks like.
To date, I can count on one hand the number of BM gas keys that were staked properly (out of HUNDREDS seen).
With BM, it is NOT a "bad QC day", but par for the course.

Easier to just link to the threads where the properly staked keys are pictured already. (http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=6993)
And to post a couple of pictures from that thread:

Dedeye,
Those are my pics from the carrier key staking thread in the AR Technical, I guess what you've missed is that those are pics of a Colt M16 carrier. Colt and Bushmaster carrier key staking isn't even similar. Actually I would equate them as polar opposites.....

Oops. I knew the pics were of Colt BCGs and didn't mean to suggest they were Bushmaster BCGs. My post was in reference to C4 saying some people may not know what a properly staked key looks like, and not to the other poster saying that his BM BCG's were properly staked. Sorry for the confusion.

Actually no. It is better for them to post the pic and for us to see for ourselves.
