This was the original grease specified for the M14 rifle (and M1 Garand?). With all the modern lubricants on the market today is this still a viable choice for a firearms grease?

Sure. I still have a can of the stuff around. Unfortunately my days of shooting iron sights are over. At the last I found something that worked even better:

You could actually feel the rifle cycle a bit more smoothly.

Lubriplate 130 is good rifle grease. I had good luck with it for years. Since the early 1980's, I used Pennzoil wheel bearing grease on the M1A and M1 Garand, then transitioned to synthetic wheel bearing grease once the tubs of Pennzoil were used up. I have a tub of Havoline synthetic wheel bearing grease on the cleaning bench now and it works just fine on M1 Garands, 1903 Springfields, 8mm Mausers, etc.

I have been using a tube of this stuff for over 15 years on guns and rifles that require grease. It has always worked and the white color makes it easy to see application.
