Hadn't known of this one, and it confused me a tad. I had recalled schools being "gun free zones" took place far earlier in response mostly to the TX tower shooting. Was this a paper tiger to get votes that didn't impact what many states already had or did it add a bunch of "gun free zones" to states that didn't have them? This one given to us by none other than "just get a shotgun" Joe, and signed into law by President George H.W. Bush...Thanx George!

Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990

The Gun-Free School Zones Act (GFSZA) is an act of the U.S. Congress prohibiting any unauthorized individual from knowingly possessing a loaded or unsecured firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone as defined by 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(25). The law applies to public, private, and parochial elementary schools and high schools, and to non-private property within 1000 feet of them. It provides that State and local law may authorize the issuance of licenses that exempt the licensed individuals from the prohibition.

It was introduced in the U.S. Senate in October 1990 by Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware and was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush.

No, IMO, pretty much just the result of legislation aimed at curbing the rise in the violent crime rate throughout the 60's and into the 90's.

If you were around then the Federal Government was throwing all kinds of money into efforts to reduce crime and put more police on the street, as well as passing legislation such as the Gun Free School Zones.

We all have opinions regarding cause and effect, but there was a lot of well-meaning effort put forth.

Again, maybe it was successful, maybe it wasn't, BUT violent crime has been decreasing since around 1991 for whatever reason, maybe Bill Clinton? (joke)

We need "Crime Free Zones" where it is a crime to commit a crime.

That's where I want to live.

Just like the 89 Import Ban. Not sure who was worse, him of Clinton. At least the Clinton ban had a sunset.

Doesn’t this mean that any gun moved in a car with in 1000 feet of a school is an infraction of the law?

Another feel good measure that actually is never enforced because it was never meant to be effective. Even that conviction of the lady in public housing would probably now fall afoul of recent SCOTUS decisions.

This of course would only be enforced by national LEOs since it is a national law, and states and cities don’t enforce those statutes.

What worries me about laws like this is that from what I read, they could pretty much charge everyone that has left their house with a gun.

What d'ya think the goal was? If you can't ban guns and can't designate the whole country a No Carry Zone, just set up a confusing patchwork of GFZ's that are impossible to get off the crapper in the morning without having to cross.

Thank Jackboot Janet Reno and her fellow SS-Einsatzgruppen Wannabes...

Google “lead-crime hypothesis” sometime. Many of the most successful anti-crime campaigns seem to have started right when violent crimes were beginning to downslope, already. NYC comes to mind.

I agree. Why don't they just make it illegal to kill people because you are having a bad day?

This thread reminds me of the time when I realized that "Republicans" really weren't "Republicans" anymore, and when they stopped representing my interests.

This law was overturned by SCOTUS in 1995. It was then re-introduced in 1996 with a SCOTUS compliant version.

Generally correct. LTC guns are exempt. All others are not. There is NO LEOSA exemption, not an out-of-state exemption.

I would estimate this law is violated millions of times a day. I myself drive within 1000 feet of 3 different schools just about every time I leave my home. That is 6 felonies a day for me if I have a gun in my car. You take a pro-gun state like Texas that does not require guns in cars be lock, unloaded, etc, and it is easy to see how often it might be violated.

The whole GFSZ thing has not teeth and there have been very few convictions. Members of congress were trying to do away with it this summer, but it went nowhere and I doubt it will.

Oddly, the Colorado CCW law, IIRC, specifically talks about how you can have a gun in a car ON school property. Maybe the CCW license gives enough cover for it.

I'm really starting to appreciate more the Progressives strategy of passing laws and not ever enforcing them. I don't know if it is part of some nefarious plan- selectively enforce this specific law to shut up guns rights people- or if it just fits into their overall 'something/anything' and move on strategy.

It's part of their Sword of Damocles strategy, how they hang Three Felonies a Day over everyone so that once a person becomes an Enemy of the Glorious Progressive Stalinist Revolution... well, Stalin said it best himself: "Show me the person, and I'll show you the crime."

Then there are bragging rights when you go back home to get re-elected again.
Even if the Law has no effect, it looks good on paper and people back home feel like you achieved something for them.
We've left logic, facts and the Constitution behind. The only things that matter are feelings and sound bites.
Putting real security measures inside schools is the only logical way to fix this.

Isn't that the damn truth? Whenever I hear the term RINO, I automatically think of him being the poster child.

Besides both Bushes being turds, crazy uncle Joe is the man who made schools soft targets. Everyone wants to blame guns, psychotropics, video games, etc. IMO this bill crazy uncle Joe introduced is what opened the pandora’s Box, now the it’s a game of copy cat to see who can become more infamous.

Kasich is the new face of RINOs. I don't know where that boy's head is lately. Got a bad case of Trump Hate going. I used to be a fan of his, but he has gone full stupid lately.

It boggles my mind how anyone actually likes Kasich (minus liberal Democrats). He may have recently pushed through some pro 2a legislation in good times in OH as he postured to become president, but I never forgot the fact he was a major proponent of the ‘93 Federal AWB (he was actually a key vote). I never trusted him, I found his positions to be shitty and I didn’t like his snobby attitude in the dash cam video where he was very condescending to an Ohio State Trooper writing him a citation, I thought that was very revealing.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who knows what a RINO POS he is. I was honestly surprised at some people I know who liked him when he was running for the Republican Presidential nomination. I was more than happy to enlighten them on just how bad of a candidate he is.

He's long been known as a RINO. He voted for the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban.
