View Full Version : MI Combat Handguards
I'm reposting this from the main section for a couple reasons. First, Midwest Industries is the go to line that I send most cops to when they are looking to get parts for their AR15. The reason is that most cops are paying at least one mortgage, and depending on how viscous their plethora of exwives were, possibly on a few homes. Most cops seem to have also been divorced at least once, and are sending their kids to private schools or college. I've been doing this for years as MI has long offered the best bang for the buck, especially for guys where every dollar matters. The name might not be Gucci, but real cops don't care (if they did they would be FF or dets).
The new MI rail looks good, which isn't shocking as MI has been stepping up their game for years, to the point where I think I own more MI mounts for optics than I do any other. Anyway, as long as M4C gives me a forum to post in and make comments, I'll continue to point out my views on the industry, and products.
When I get a chance, I'll try to get one of these rails and install it on a carbine, then I can report back based on first hand use and installation.

The Midwest Industries Combat Rail Handguards.
These new handguards use our patented 4140 heat treated torque plate and barrel nut and are made of 6061 aluminum with a type 3 hard coat anodized finish.
This handguard has a MIL-Standard 1913 Picatinny top rail, two anti-rotation QD sling sockets, and seven sides of M-LOK slots.
With the new installation hardware these handguards are one of the easiest to install and will not pull off or rotate even under extreme conditions.
These handguards install without requiring the heating of any parts, timing of the barrel nut, shims or special fasteners, and without the use of any Loctite or other adhesives.
This new handguard will be available in seven popular lengths, all with an inside diameter of 1.3” and an outside diameter of 1.5”.
Actual lengths and weights are listed below. All weights include the steel barrel nut and all hardware.
A titanium barrel nut and hardware are available for those looking to cut weight.
One five slot polymer M-LOK rail section is included with each handguard.

If I may add a modest take of my own, as a humble n00b... I haven't done a lot of business with Midwest, just a rail section and some third-party stuff, but their customer-service--Before, During *and* After Sale--has walked on water with me. Andy Yohnk, one of their tech guys, gets a big shout-out in particular.

I am a big fan of their Aimpoint Pro mount. I have bought three of them, and they have worked really well for me and my family.
And the two rails as well.

How are the retaining bolts secured? Is there a heli-coil, nut, or just threaded aluminum? Is the torque plate threaded?
Great looking rail, I really like the steps made from the earlier gen quads I am familiar with.

I finally got some pics shot of my updated MI carbine, I'll get pics up in a little bit. This post should serve as a good reminder for me....
I like their non qd scope mount, rock solid. This new rail's profile looks good to me. I look forward to hearing more on it from end users.
Close up shot of how mine looks, I'll point out that I needed to make some minor mods as I was not able to get off a gas block, so if you see something that looks odd, it is my fault.

I'm really interested in the centurion rail panels. I have never used or held them before, since this is the final form of your rifle I assume they are good to go? Maybe an odd question but what's the texture like?

The Centurion Arm rail covers have very good grip without actually being rough, and have good insulation properties. Not an odd question at all, I think it is a good question as some polymer rail covers with like slick plastic, and this is not one of them.

I installed the handguard and centurion rail covers tonight! I put these on my rainier arms mountain upper 16 in.

Mine has held up fine, I have zero complaints.
I’ll be honest, if Geissele made a 10.5” rail I would have bought that for my new 11.5” build. But they don’t.
Instead I went with this rail based in numerous positive reviews. It’s really light and ridiculously easy to install. Coming from quad rails I’m still getting used to the slim feel. It feels very solid, and being a short length, I cant see how it wouldn’t be rugged enough for most applications.
Even with a heavy Colt FBI barrel, my build is under 7lbs with an Aimpoint Pro and Vickers sling. No light or BUIS yet but I may still be able to be under 7lbs.
Those Centurion rail guards look great and I think I may pick some up

Just reading thru some of these old threads and though I would chime in... I have found the MI Combat Rails to be VERY well built and Light... Ask an old Infantryman if he wants to add weight to a rifle....
I honestly think these are built better than many of their competitors' They seem that way to me anyway....
The C/S at MI has been very responsive and GtG in my experience.
I wouldn't hesitate to say they are my go to rail...

I agree completely. These rails are solid and install very well. They are also priced very competitively as compared to the more talked about boutique options available. I don't hesitate to buy their stuff.
After looking at a ton of other options, I put their 2 piece drop in on the two LE6920 OEM2's that already had GI barrel nuts installed and I wasn't going to mess with the shaved FSB. Everything went together perfectly and both are extremely solid.

As manufacturers whittle off the cruciform shape of the Picatinny rails for a lower profile they sacrifice some rigidity. The Night Fighter's longer nut helps to control deflection with a skinnier tube (your laser isn't going to deflect with sling or barricade pressure).
