View Full Version : What Hat Are You Wearing?

As discussed in another thread, I favor an Akubra Australian military slouch hat converted to a "safari" hat.

I convert it by removing the hardware that allows you to pin one brim up (why wear a brimmed hat if you're going to pin one side up?).

Then I order the real military puggaree from Lawrance Ordnance https://www.lawranceordnance.com/, and complete the image. I discard the cheesy green puggaree that comes with the hat. Apparently the hats shipped to the US are in the configuration ordered by the Haitian military, and that's why you don't get the genuine Australian 7-pleat pug with it to begin with. I also remove the chin strap since it's barely adjustable and a nuisance.

I always was a fan of the Tarzan/Jungle/Safari movies of yesteryear, and this seems as close as I can get to the "reel" thing.

I did some research, and a lot of the photos I found of big game hunters in Africa of the last 150 years or so seem to show the person wearing that era's equivalent of the Australian slouch hat! So I feel I've "nailed" the authenticity on this.

For those that don't know, Akubras are made in Australia and distributed through https://www.davidmorgan.com/shop/product/80/aussie-slouch-hat-open-crown

The slouch hat comes with an open crown, so I always pay them the extra twenty bucks to put a bash on it.

Akubras are built to last. If you're looking for a hat that is "dressy" and meant to be worn to dinner or something, then Akubra probably isn't for you. But if you're out in the sticks and need a hat that can be dropped, blown off, rained on, and dropped in a volcano, then Akubra is a tough hat that can withstand a lot of abuse.

It's a little dark in the pic, but the hat is an olive green (British Khaki) with a greenish-tan khaki puggaree that can easily be removed if necessary.

I wish I could post an equal amount... But, its not super special.

Here's my EDH:

I follow the #HUSHLife.

I would say I wear this hat 90% of my hours awake every day.

Considering it was the most I ever spent on just a ball cap, I worry about it in the winds. For other stuff I have our local little league hat I wear to support the Nephew's league.

I have a whole mess of RAA death card hats, a few BCM and Noveske hats, and just got a Giessele hat today in my swag. The RAA hats are my favorite; light weight, no annoying rivot, perfect rim padding, and the death card is awesome looking and great history. Add pics later.

A Texas OGT ball cap is my go to. The hat has a nice patina to go along with a noticeable, but not overpowering, smell of man sweat.

I instantly know someone is a cool cat if they mention the hat. I can then stop thinking about which method of throat punch to utilize, where the nearest cover is and carry on a conversation.

There are two other hats I have a soft spot for, and own a couple of each.

One, the Civil War forage cap (not kepi) like the one the little black kid wore in the "Wee Pals" cartoons I loved as a kid.

I wear one to gun shows and shoots and always get a compliment or two.

Mine comes from Dirty Billy's, a known and respected sutler of all hats Civil War:

The other hat is the Soviet ushanka, complete with badge. I own a couple of these, complete with Cyrillic stampings on the inside and a date of 1978.

Yes, I left the Soviet red star badge on it for the "cool" factor. It doesn't get that cold here during the winter, so mostly it stays in the closet.

If at an outdoor event, doing yard work, etc. that is going to keep me outside for an extended period of time in the sun I go with a boonie style hat from Outdoor Research like their Helios sun hat. If it's wet out then their Seattle Sombrero.

For cold weather again I don Outdoor Research beanies and watch caps.

As for the venerable ball cap I like sporting hats with flags instead of a logo of some sort, I have multiple American flag and Texas flag caps from everyone from Tactical Tailor to BCM.

Saw a large body builder type wear a pink "pu$$y hat" in the NRA show with a pro 2nd t-shirt lol.

Working outdoors, probably a boonie hat of some variety. At the range or doing training, then usually a short brim boonie hat (Tyr Huron) or Outdoor Research pocket radar cap.

If it's casual, I've grown fond of my Slangvel M43

Outdoors in sun doing yardwork, etc. - an OR boonie or a DPC twill/mesh safari hat.

Otherwise either a flexfit or fitted ball cap with the beanie button removed - local high school, KU or UNKearney are the ones I wear most often.

I'll wear a fairly covert firearms related velcro adjustable ball cap with the beanie button removed when I'm going to the range, otherwise nope.

Is removing the beanie button a simple matter of snipping the threads under it?

Is removing the beanie button a simple matter of snipping the threads under it?

Nearly, most of them are held on with a clamp thingie (precise term there, eh?) that expand into the hollow portion of the fabric covered metal beanie button.

For unstructured cloth hats I usually just bunch the fabric of the hat in my hand and yank it off with a pair of pliers.

For particularly stuborn ones, or on a structured/pricey hat I'll work a pair of side cutters between the hat and button and snip it.

It really does make a difference if you have short hair and wear ear pro over the baseball cap.

The hat I wear the most is from Richardson and says POLICE on the front with my number on the back. Oddly enough, they make a hat that fits me very well.

I find myself only wearing hats with any regularity at work. I have a few Under Armour hats labeled with my university on them and some 5.11 hats I've picked up for free that are worn once in a while, usually with bad weather.

Civilian job I wear a RE Factor Tactical Blasting Cap w/the thin blue line patch on front and ArmyChief patch on the back. Or a beat up Atlanta Falcons cap.

Yard work is a multicam condor trucker cap w/a subdued flag.

Here's what I wear and I like it so much, purchased several. Biggest problem for me with hats is heat, my head gets hot no matter the temp, and any hats make me sweat in all but the lowest temps, but I need to wear a hat due to shaved head and an interest in reducing sun exposure, etc. It literally took me decades to find the "perfect" hat for me:

I have so many hats it's not funny, including a large brimmed straw hat which I do wear around the yard and such, but it does not roll up nice and small to be put in a bag, or pocket, etc. It also looks kinda goofy on me I think. Believe when I say, decades trying to find just the right hat that fits virtually all needs I have for a hat.

I feel your pain.

I'm VERY hot natured and only wear hats when I'm in the sun for protection or cold weather. I have a thick head of hair that's like wearing a helmet that holds heat in add a hat and I'm in misery. One thing I do is pour cold water over my head and put my hat back on when working outdoors.

But yeah, no hat breaths enough for me.

I have an Akubra that I wear when I'm just outdoors (and the temperature is in the 40s or higher).

A South African bush hat (boonie hat) for when the space and/or weight of the Akubra can be an issue (namely, it's a lot easier to roll the bush hat up and toss it into a duffle than to do likewise with the Akubra).

A Sitka-branded ballcap for running around town.

A tacticool Oakley ballcap for summer shooting and mowing the lawn.

A reproduction early WWII US HBT cap for when I'm shooting old guns in summer.

A wool flatcap for running around town when it's cool but not cold.

A Stormy Kromer for when I'm outside and it's cool but not cold.

A jeep cap for when it's really cold. (And if it's windy or really, really cold, I put up a hood.)

1- Did you order the puggaree in the same size as your hat or did you order a size (or two) up?
And
2- Did you put that puggaree on upside down?

I did put the puggarree on upside down for shits and giggles to see if anyone noticed. Of course the pleats go at the top a la the Australian military. Each of the seven pleats represents the seven Australian states. Good catch. I wore it that way for a couple of days because it was tighter upside down and didn't shift around as much. Later, when I took the puggarree off and washed it in hot water then dried it in the clothes dryer it shrank just enough to fit. I now wear it right side up like you're supposed to.

Always order the size puggarree that corresponds to the size of hat. If you order one that's a little big, it may shift too much. When you have the correct size, be prepared for it to take a little effort to get it on the hat the first time. As I said, mine loosened up over time and I had to shrink it in hot water and the clothes dryer to get it back to the right size. When you order from Lawrence Ordnance, you might want to get two just in case one is too small. The "correct" size does have some variation in both the hat and the pug, so having a spare is not a bad idea in case you just can't get one on.

BTW, David Morgan charges $20 for different bashes. I like the Coober Pedy bash for the classic safari hat look. The pinched telescope bash also looks good if you're after the "Out of Africa" or "Ghost in the Darkness" safari hat bash. The one in the photo is the Coober Pedy bash, but after months of abuse. You have to tell David Morgan you want a specific bash in the comments, because they only list certain ones "officially."

I got my puggaree one size larger than my Akubra and it was extremely tight going on. And my Akubra was already a little small and it got smaller with the puggaree on it.

I doused it in warm water - along with the hat around the band - and pulled it tight on my head over a shemagh... and now everything seems to fit fine. But the puggaree is still quite tight on the hat. Not that I mind it.

I bought an Akubra The Territory in khaki in a size larger than my older Akubra (the tight one): The hat, of course, doesn't fit as tightly as the old Akubra, but the puggaree is no harder to put on and didn't make the hat any tighter.

So... I'm guessing the older Akubra's plastic liner make the hat thicker than The Territory, which is not lined.

I don't know that I had to remove the hat band, but I cut it off. Did likewise with my Cattleman to get the puggaree on it (so now I need a size larger than my khaki/tan puggaree in the black puggaree for it, whenever Lawrence gets them back in, in the proper size).

OD green Larue tactical hat you get in the box of goods when you buy a mount.

When I need to be grey man it's a Kuhl sand colored low profile cap.

I have a dark green and black Army hat I bought at a gas station because it was the most discreet/least showy one I have seen. Other than that, I wear a tan Badlands (SD) hat or my pretty faded Notre Dame hat. All baseball/no mesh caps.

I only wear a hat when I am going to be outside in the sun for a while.

I vacillate between my ECU cap:

And a Duke basketball cap. I wear an Arc'teryx BAC with appropriate patch for when I want to look tactically cool.

Thanks!

I clicked on the link and now am deluged with ads for East Carolina Pirates hats. Somehow the scathing comments I leave for them on my Yahoo homepage - when you close an ad it asks you why - hasn't slowed anyone down, on anything.

Stepped out the house, stopped short, oh no! I went back in, I forgot the Kangol.

What is a kangol? I've always called that cap a newsboy cap or a driving cap.

Also, does anybody really know the difference between a fedora and a trilby other than to say a trilby is a short-brimmed fedora?

And then I dilly dally, I ran though an alley, I bumped into my old girl Sally from the valley.

Think more Run DMC, less Dana Dane.

I knew I could depend on somebody.
