On May 24, 1844, while in Washington DC, Samuel F.B. Morse sent the historic first telegraph message to Alfred Vail at a railroad station in Baltimore, Maryland: “What hath God wrought!” The telegraph system subsequently spread across America and the world.
Some pretty cool history. I starting working in the fiber optic industry a couple years back, it just amazes me how far we have come in communication technology and I'm sure I'm just scraping the surface.
