I haven't been around these parts in awhile thanks to a hefty load with work and my last year of college, but I've finally saved up the money to be in the range for a AR-15 and I need some advice.

A friend of mine is looking to sell his DPMS AR-15(Similar to the AP4 PANTHER™ CARBINE) for about $700. The rifle seems to be in good condition and it's had 1000+ rounds through it. The initial plan was to build my first AR, but all the price checking I keep doing, I can't seem to price one out for any less then $1000.

So is it worth it to buy his used AR or is it possible to build one within $700-800 range? If a build is possible, which parts? Everyone on here recommended the Bravo Company Uppers, but at about $400, plus the $130 bolt carrier and charging handle, I'm already at $550 and I still need: Lower assembly, BUIS, Stock, etc...

Any help or links would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Save more money. Watch closely for good deals on the components you described. Don't forget ammo costs. Save more money.

700 bones is a great price. You can probably find all the components for less, but add postage and wait time and you'll find the 700 not a bad deal at all.

Submariner, I know saving money is always an option. The AR isn't my first rifle, I've considered ammo costs, hence why I set the price around $700-800 so the extra can be spend on ammo.

sinister, where can the components be found for less? I don't mind waiting for parts to be delivered.

If you're in GA, Joseph Kiser is who you want to talk to. He supplied the parts and labor for my latest upper build. You won't be disappointed in his price and service.

$700 is not too bad. You could build one for that price but it would take time.

I can buy the Stag Arms upper with ARMS 40 sights for $475 plus shipping and I can put together a RRA or Stag lower with RRA/CMT LPK and RRA or Stag stock for about $250 plus shipping. That's $725 plus shipping for a build. Not sure where you're getting over a $1000 to build unless you're wanting to add rails and a reddot right off the bat. If that DPMS has rails and an Aimpoint or EOTech on it for $700, then it's a great deal. Otherwise, it's nothing spectacular.

I think I bought my DPMS AP$ two years ago NIB for $700 or $750. Has been a great carbine.
