View Full Version : How many countries have you been to?

C4IGrant
06-01-18, 14:11
Airports do not count. :p You must have walked around, slept, driven in and or eaten food there.

I am currently up to 17 (Canada, Cuba, Jamaica, St. Barts, St. Martin (two countries in one), Spain, Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, France, Monaco, Japan, Hong Kong, Greece, Croatia, Haiti).

I've spent a ton of time in Canada due to half my family being from there. That's it.

I have a buddy that has been to over 50 countries, but only about 12 states. I find that funny. He hasn't ventured further than 100 miles by road in his home state of Alaska.. I find that even more funny.

Now, of your lists, which country(s) was your fav?

Maybe should ask about least favorite also.

Favs for diving: Burma, Fiji, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinia and Thailand
Least fav for diving: Maldives - didn't think the diving was worth the trip and Male was very unfriendly. Weno Island, FSM (Truk Lagoon) was also very unfriendly, actually downright hostile, but at least the diving was good. Same goes for Port Morsby, PNG.

Favs for hiking and river running: Hands down, the Patagonia Region of Argentina and Chile. Great people, food and wine!
No least fav.

Fav for touring: Peru (Machu Pichhu).
No least fav.

I liked Australia. Being a Texan, I meshed well with the locals. Too bad their politics are sooo screwed up. If I could bring the guns, I’d retire there.

Eastern Europe was cool too.

Least favorite... Pacific Asia. Don’t like the food. Yeah...I know.

COMBLOC countries during the Cold War. Not because they were fun, but they really drove home reality. Moscow and East Berlin especially.

Canada in 1998 and 2003. On a cruise in 2002: Haiti, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Mexico. In 2007, I did an advanced college seminar in Greece and Turkey for 3 weeks. On our way over and back we stopped in Germany.

Italy, I have family in southern Italy and got the chance to go visit. Germany, I was there for a couple of years up until the Wall came down. Traveled all over Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland while there. Being single I got to do a ton of stuff that I'd never have the chance to do again. I think the absolute coolest thing I did while there was to take a 10 day mountain climbing course out of Garmisch that concluded with climbing the Matterhorn. Absolutely unbelievable!!

I don't really have one that has stood out above the others in all/most aspects. Spain comes pretty close to being the most well balanced in terms of pros/cons. I can see myself returning to the UK a few times (already been twice). Italy was probably the neatest in terms of sites/sights, but I thought the city of Rome itself was a nightmare, as are the Romans. Machu Picchu was bucket list-worthy and Cusco is amazing, but Lima is a shithole and I didn't find Peruvians to be overly welcoming/friendly. I've also never understood the allure of Mexico, considering most don't leave the resort - I've been once (PV) and other than wanting to see some Aztec ruins, I have no desire to return.

I'd like to add a new category - nicest people. For me, it was the French outside of the greater-Paris area; alternatively, Parisians are some of the worst. English and Scots are up there for the nicest, too. I'm not including Canadians in the running because most of them really would give you the shirt off their back. The nicest fellow tourists I meet are usually Canadians and Aussies.

Honu
06-11-18, 17:21
Nicest people ?

Like any place it’s mixed but some of the country folks of Honduras and Guatemala have nothing but offer you what they have !

Canadians are mellow
The most pompous the French
The no worries let’s party have a good time are the Brazilians smiles laughs etc...
The most truth and harshest when criticizing the Spanish as in from Spain funny to hear them go off :)
Any city anywhere it seems are majority jerks and rip offs etc... hate city folks for the most part
Any time you get away in the country most folks around the world are nice
