I built up an ArmaLite AR-10 based 338 Federal. I used an ArmaLite SS barrel, SWS Noveske spec E1 14" rail, and a Leupold Mk4 3.5-10 with 3/4 Mildots from Premier Reticles riding in TPS rings. The Vickers Tactical padded QD sling was PERFECT for field use in this environment.

We hunted about 26 miles southwest of Gillette, Wyoming on a private ranch that is guesstimated to be well over 150,000 acres.

I used factory Federal ammunition loaded using a Barnes Triple Shock projectile weighing 185grs.

The 338 Federal is supreme overkill for antelope, and it did not disappoint in performance.

I harvested this buck at under 75yds after low crawling in, lazing the distance, and being spotted by the buck. In a tense few seconds I retrieved my rifle from the ground next to me, and shouldered the rifle and squeezed off a perfect kill shot.

I am extremely pleased at the pearled "silver tips" as well as the overall size of the horns.

My dog, a boxer, will feast on this antelope over the next year.

nice, are they good eats? I tear up venison, moose, caribou, kangaroo, goat. Those look like they could make a turd.

Excellent ! I bet that was fun.

1) They do eat pretty well, but the wife hates game so the dog gets it.

2) No idea on the B&C score, in fact I didn't even measure the horns while it was on the animal. I liked the wide spread, the pearl tips, and the character of the horns though. They were easily over 2x the height of the ears which makes him a "shooter buck", and not necessarily a trophy buck.

3) Best friend takes the backstraps, so all the meat I have is suitable for the grinder and dog bowl. I could bring some to grill up, but it would be roast or hams.

.338 on an antelope must have been like a friggin lightning strike - hardcore man - gotta love it! I need to read the other caliber thread more - never knew you could build an AR in .338, (my favorite game rifle cartridge bar none). Now I'm feeling this sense of need coming on...If I could build an AR in .45-.70, (my next favorite) I think I'd die and go to heaven...Nice shooting!
