Seriously:

Packs of Robots Will Hunt Down Uncooperative Humans (http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2008/10/packs-of-robots-will-hunt-down.html)

Skynet's a ****in' bummer.

just another reason why it's essential for citizens to be armed. :)

Yikes.

Time to figure out how to make EMP grenades out of toaster parts, I guess.

...how long before we see packs of droids hunting down pesky demonstrators with paralysing weapons?

I know I shouldn't find that mental picture as amusing as I do.

Defending against? Get a plasma rifle, preferably in the 40 watt range. ;) Seriously though, that stuff doesn't look like anything that could withstand a few 12ga slugs or a good 'ol louisville slugger to just the right sensor area. ;) Heck, by the time that stuff actually becomes common place in public (hopefully never), hackers will have likely figured out ways to hack in to them and make them turn on their controllers.

Electrified moat.

Or keep a copy of Windows Vista around then try to load into the robots via wireless connection. That will stop them for sure.
