i just picked up a springfield M1A and have put some federal gold medal 168 gr sierra matchking ammo through it . my question is what is everyone else using as i am trying to get good accuracy but i am trying to use the "good stuff" for my bolt action . any thoughts ?

I use just about anything 168gr and under. I have a stockpile of 1969/1970 linked M-80 Ball, (Lake City and Remington), but now that I'm down to under 1k, I have been shooting Privi Partisan FMJ and because of a well-timed sale at Dicks Sporting Goods, (timed with a gift card, buy-1-get-1 and score points) Remington Core-Lock 150....For HD, I use Hornady 110gr TAP.... The only thing I shy away from is newer production Indian surplus, (the old 70's Brit Indian is fine)....

The M14 was originally designed around 7.62 x 51 mm M59 150 gr FMJ, and later the 147 gr M80 FMJ. You will find the best functioning and performance in the M14/M1A using projectiles of similar weight.

The Nosler Ballistic Tip 150 gr PT, the Hornady AMAX 155 gr PT, Nosler 155 gr OTM, Hornady 155 gr OTM, Hornady 150 gr JSP, Sierra 150 gr Game King JSP, Speer 150 gr Gold Dot JSP, Nosler 150 gr Accubond, Nosler 150 gr Partition, Barnes 130 or 150 gr TSX or TTSX (remember, with the Barnes all copper bullets you can use a bit lighter weight projectile), Hornady 150 gr SST, Swift Scirocco 150 gr PT, Remington 150 gr Core-Lokt Ultra-bonded JSP, etc... all work well.

Heavier projectiles tend to beat up M14/M1A design a bit more.

Also, as years of military and Hi-Power shooting has amply demonstrated, the M14/M1A is NOT the best platform if you want an durable long lasting accurate rifle...

Which do you recommend for both bolt action and semi-auto for a durable accurate rifle Doc?

I like NATO surplus, Portuguese being my favorite. I also like 155 & 168 Hornady TAP, but my M118LR chamber
allows me to shoot just about any 7.62 x 51 or .308 ammo including 180 grain sub sonic if I choose.

Thousands of problem free rounds fired prove my SEI builds are extremely durable and they deliver undiminished accuracy.

Are you sure you don't work for SEI? Because that was completely off topic.

When I was on R/R I fired the Lithuanian ammo from ammoman.com, the Federal 150gr. FMJ and some SA surplus and it all shot well. Also, the Sellier & Bellot ammo works good. Ammoman has the Lithuanian still as well as some surplus German 7,62.

Stay on topic Littlelebowski.

All of the ammo that I listed in my post on 10-28-2008 @ 08:25 AM
was fired from more than one of my SEI M14 builds.

My SEI built M14s are the only 7.62 x 51 / .308 rifles that I shoot.

BTW, what ammo do you shoot from your M14 variant?

The topic was ammo, not how reliable and durable your SEI is. You are the most emotionally invested gun owner I've ever heard of.

Has anyone tried the German surplus ammo that recently hit the market?
