View Full Version : Geissele URGI or Colt CCU
Both are now available from Brownells as complete uppers. These seem like not quite comparable but strong quality level uppers.
Colt CCU - $550 w/o BCG or CH

Which do you choose and for what purpose?
What is the point of this thread? You're asking for recommendations on what to buy? Or just want to know which people here would choose?

I would go with the Colt unless you specifically want a clone. Better value and more money for the lower, trigger and optics

I’m interested in the more knowledgeable members’ assessment of a) which they’d personally buy if given the option between the two and b) the purpose for which they would use their choice, which obviously impacts a). What are the benefits to each?
Not presented, but something I’d like to read, is whether there is a reason to spend ~$500 (after adding to the CCU the purchase of ambi CH and BCG) more for the Geissele/DD option. In other words, is it that much better for Military or heavy Duty use.
If this topic is not technical enough and the moderators see the need to close or delete it, I’m not going to have a heart attack. I like to mine the experience of others. I’d buy either with a smile on my face.
On the KAC... I wasn’t (until now) aware they offered upper receiver groups for sale, otherwise I would consider that an possible inclusion. Of course, their price hovers about another $550-600 over the Geissele/DD. Serious question: Why that over the other two? Is it “worth” (subjective) the additional cost?
My including the Colt and Geissele/DD options are simply because both companies produce firearms/receiver groups that are used by the US military in 5.56.
The Colt CCU would be a fine choice with the Centurion MLOK rail. I have a Trooper and have been very impressed with it.

I’d prefer the urgi as a preference for there rails
However I don’t see the value in what there asking
This is my URGI “kinda close enough clone”
DD 14.5 midlength govt barrel with pinned gas block $265 at primary arms “as I understand this is the exact barrel used in there build
Geissele MK8 DDC 13” picked up for $220 on there last sale
Aero precision stripped upper $80
Total $585 instead of geissele 979$ stripped price.
Is it a clone? No but it’s close enough for me
Will be pinning a dead air flash hider the sandman suppressor

That was funny 😄
The Colt CCU is good value, but I prefer more meat on the barrel. If you were to swap out the barrel and change the muzzle device, it would still be cheaper than the URG-I.
Of the two, I choose the URG-I. I've been interested in service rifle builds lately, so I'm currently waiting for it to be released.
I would do the Colt as someone said, unless you are into clones. But-either one, switch out the barrel, gas block and muzzle device and whatever lower you chose, must use an A5 or it won't work or be accurate-don't forget to paint the thing!
KAC SR-15 Mod 2
This is the correct answer.
Of those two I’d go with the URGI. The Geissele rail is more robust compared to a CMR and I’d rather have a Daniel Defense mid-length barrel.
I would still prefer a MK14 with a 16” Daniel Defense barrel as I’m not concerned with clones or pinned muzzle devices.

If the budget allows the Geissele this is the correct answer. Might as well spend a few more ducats and get a better KAC mousetrap and some good BUIS that make up some of the cost difference.
Otherwise the Colt CCU is a great value.

Correct
The Geissele rail is superior to the Centurion rail on the Colt upper.
I do not like muffler clamp style rails that most companies design their rails with.
The KAC is superior to both.

Yeah I admit that made me chuckle :)

Geissele if you don't mind spending the money and aren't overly concerned with weight.
Very pleased with mine.

Neither one.
Get the UGRI Colt NFA upper from Geissele or the SR-15 MOD2
