Just heard on NPR that the Israeli state has relaxed gun control laws. They hope that an additional 30,000 licensed gun owners will be ready to help against Palestinian attacks. Considering that most of the applicants will be combat trained veterans, the impact should be profound. And yes, the subject line of this thread is from the government spokesman.

Wonderful idea, just decades late in its implementation.

I can't believe that a country founded by survivors of a regime that was able to put people in ovens because those people had their guns taken away would have gun controls in the first place.

Truly liberalism is a disease and not just an ideology.

I guess I had this impression of every Israeli home having multiple military weapons and plenty of ammo and mags. I thought only the gas mask might have to be government issued. Guess I'm totally wrong, eh?

Yup.

I would like to get Yoni’s take on this as well. I realize Israel is not the gun friendly utopia many would have assumed, I did think private Israeli citizens were more frequently armed while out in public. Lord knows they should be.

https://www.jpost.com/Israel-News/Public-Security-Minister-Gilad-Erdan-relaxes-Israels-gun-control-criteria-565352
Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan announced new criteria Monday making hundreds of thousands of IDF infantry unit veterans eligible to receive firearms licenses.

In addition, Erdan decided officers and commanders will not be required to return their arms and weapons license after they are released from reserve duty.

“Many civilians saved lives during terror attacks and in an era of ‘lone terrorism.’ The more skilled civilians carrying weapons, the greater the chance of thwarting attacks without casualties and reducing the number of casualties,” he said.

Looks like it's true.

Weren't firearms basically handed out during the 70s and 80s? When did Israel enact their firearm restrictions?

Yoni explained the policies in depth and voiced a bit of frustration with the misconception we have here.
I hope he shows up soon to explain this a bit better.

Its time for Commissioner Gorden to head for the roof to light the Yoni Signal.

Shortly after I moved from Chicago I remember reading an article discussing the shock and mild mayhem in Chicago PD when the oncoming shift found no murders were reported the prior 24hrs. Everyone assumed 911 call center went offline, that fresh bodies were yet unreported, hell had frozen over, etc. Turns out that for one brief moment no one was murdered. I remember quipping about how glad I was to leave the gun free liberal utopian war zone.

It is currently easier for an average citizen to own a handgun (not carry) in Washington DC or New York City than it is in Israel.

In Israel, to own a handgun, you must live in danger zones like the West Bank or a settlement, work as a public transportation driver, work in the diamond industry, or be a reserve NCO or higher. In other words if you happen to be a lawyer, accountant, or computer programmer who lives in Tel Aviv, you cannot get a license to carry or own a handgun. You can get a target shooting permit, but I believe you have to keep the gun locked up at the gun club. If you live in a settlement in a dangerous area you can get the military to issue you one longarm or SMG or M1 Carbine.

Geeze, for a "surrounded on all sides" country that not very long ago had the dangers of being disarmed by those who meant you no good intentions forcibly demonstrated on them, big parts of "never forget / never again" seem to have been forgotten.

It is also completely bizarre that they force military service from every citizen, but then don't trust those same citizens to be armed. Israel is one of the few countries that could get away with "every citizen is an armed responder" because they are a largely homogeneous population that doesn't tolerate a large degree of dissent or criminal activity.

The last time an Israeli shot an Israeli was when PM Rabin was assassinated by religious extremists. And it doesn't seem like their current gun control laws prevented that incident, but "normal / sane" armed citizens might have prevented it.

We have to be honest the people that started Israel, were commies and socialist.

When it comes to guns, we the government knows best and we want to control the guns. You can look at any street corner in Israel and you will see at least one person with a M16 or Tavor. But those are government guns and the people are soldiers for the most part or people that live in remote communities near Arabs.

This is not yet a done deal, we had a minister 20 years ago that wanted to double the ownership of pistols and he was shut down by the Shaback (FBI).

We had a handful of murders of women in the 1990's among the Russian and Ethiopian immigrants due to pressure of moving to a new country. The killers were their husbands that were working as security guards, so that ended security guards taking their pistols home.

If this passes and sticks it will be a revolution. I tried to get the gun range owners to start a lobby group and then were not interested. They were making so much money off the few permits around 170,000 re qualification they didn't care.

I have a friend a retired Col. that lived in Tel Aviv, and applied for a pistol permit and was turned down.

Rabin, was not killed by a religious extremums. I am not commenting on the alleged shooter, rather the murder.

Yoni,

Does Israel have an NRA or SAF equivalent that is active in trying to secure better gun rights for Israeli citizens, or are Israeli's generally pretty OK with the status quo? Just curious.

Not sure what you are trying to say, but sounds like religious extremist to me.

The assassin, an Israeli ultranationalist named Yigal Amir, radically opposed Rabin's peace initiative and particularly the signing of the Oslo Accords.

yoni

Yigal Amir, was convicted of killing Rabin. He didn't do it, he was a patsy of very powerful people that needed to get rid of Rabin. For Rabin was backing away from Oslo, due to the influence of Motta Gur who was murdered in Julu 1995. Rabin was taken out November 1995.

I was not working the night Rabin was killed, but have done security for many Prime Ministers as part of being seconded for the event where they needed additional man power. The event that night was video taped including a long recording prior to the event of the patsy.

I don't have the time now to go through the whole list of why the whole thing stinks. But will close with this Yigal Amir was at Rabins back, never in front of him. The ER doctor when he made the announcement that Rabin was dead, he was asked what shot killed him. The doctor said a front contact wound. Reported followed up with how do you know it was a frontal wound. Doctor state due to striation in the skin around the wound and gun powder tattooing.

None of us in the business, after watching the video and collecting the facts, among Yigal Amir was directed by an agent provocateur of the Shaback .

One man rocked to greater fame and wealth after the Rabin killing, becoming worth untold billions.

Hi Yoni,
I have to ask out of ignorance. I am familiar with the old testament usage of shaback (praise, glory). However you use the term as a proper noun signifying a group. I am unfamiliar with this. Can you illuminate for me?

I never realized that they had such strict gun control there. Probably due in part to my fondness of pic threads with IDF female personnel sporting assault rifles at the beach in bikinis and around town in civilian clothes.

Here is a class of school children on a field trip, either their teacher or a school guard is sporting an M1 Carbine.

This is a pic of a father playing with his child on the first day of school, I believe he his strapped with an IWI Jericho 941 (perhaps he is off-duty LE or MIL).
