Way back in another time 1980 I picked up a Colt A-2. Just wanted it because I spent some time on Uncle Sam's tour of South East Asia. 67-68 and 70. Also picked up an AK. Never had a thing go wrong with the AK. Now for the question. The Colt seems to have a block machined into the receiver just forward of the trigger housing. I can not get any other upper to fit. Why did Colt do this and is there a fix? Over the years I have used the Colt as a coyote hunter. Maybe 200 or so dogs over 30 years. I found that factory v-max did the job out to 200 yards. Living in NY at the time that was more than enough for deep woods and some open fields. Now I wanted to turn it into a short 16 inch defense gun with adjustable stock. So thinking I have to build a lower and order an upper to get what I want. At 70 years old I no longer hunt so A-2 just gets shot once or twice a year at the range. From what I see from this sight the AR has come a long way from the jamming of 1967. By the way I will never go back to NY ever.

Your block can be professionally removed by Specialized Armament. The Block is likely hitting the bottom of other Bolt Carriers. If you get it milled off, the lower will work with Mil spec carriers. I picked up a lower that Specialized did for a buddy. It came out nice.

Other than that.... you can leave it stock, and build/buy another AR.

Before you do anything to that Colt, I wonder if it has any collector value depending on the condition? It could be less effort and cost to purchase a complete Colt LE6920 for $850 (https://www.armsunlimited.com/Colt-Law-Enforcement-M4-Carbine-p/le6920.htm) or Brownells has a Labor Day Sale on Colt M4 lower assemblies for $300 (https://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-parts/receivers/lower-receivers/ar-15-m4-complete-lower-receiver-5-56mm-prod109740.aspx). There are also Brownells coupon codes to knock another $10-$30 off that.

The block era Colt's don't command much value. They have to run the ramped carrier. But yeah... A 6920 isn't a bad way to go.

Pictures would be Wunderbar since the A2 upper didn't make it's debut until around 1983. Also pics of the lower and the sear block would be good as well.

I will post pictures in the next 24 hrs. I am going to leave the A-2 as is and build a AR on 300 blackout. Looking at Palmetto State Armory.

Getting that blocked milled off still is a good idea. That way it's compatible with normal parts (including current Colt carriers).

Also another point of interest. I had several of these sear blocked AR's in my course about 2 weeks ago in CA. Even if they mill down the sear block, you can only use the type of trigger in your lower that is currently installed.

Tell me about this! I was in the process of migrating an old Armalite NM trigger from my old Colt lower to a new lower. I forgot the old Colt had the larger diameter pins. I'm so disappointed. Well, it a good excuse to get a Larue MBT.

I can't remember dealing with any trigger issues. I think the gun I messed with is Pappabears 20" HBAR. I'll have to have him dig it out of storage and play with it again.

Read the fine print. With the sear block REMOVED, not milled down. I just had several of these rifles in class and the owner of one tried to install a Geissele trigger and it will not work. Here's a pic of the issue- the rear part of the trigger needs to be relieved to be able to clear the block.
