A former US Army Special Forces medic will be awarded the Medal of Honor next month. It was for his actions in Afghanistan in 2008.

He originally was awarded a Silver Star, our nation's third highest award for valor. A review initiated several years ago, resulted in the the Medal of Honor nomination.
He's currently a United States Secret Service Agent, serving as a Counter Assault Team member. (That's open source, I'm not betraying any confidences.)
A very large tip of the Stetson to SSG Shurer!

Former Army Staff Sgt. Ronald J. Shurer II, who received the Medal of Honor from President Trump in 2018 for his actions under enemy fire in Afghanistan a decade earlier, has died. He was 41.
Staff Sgt. Ron Shurer, Medal of Honor recipient who saved lives in Afghanistan, dead at 41 after cancer battle (https://www.foxnews.com/us/medal-of-honor-recipient-afghanistan-has-died-41-cancer)
Very sad. You just know Staff Sgt. Ronald J. Shurer II was a victim of this bullshit. R.I.P
At least 61 US soldiers deployed to former Soviet base near Afghan border after 9/11 - where ponds GLOWED green - have been diagnosed or have died from cancer, and the DoD KNEW it was TOXIC
Veterans want answers as new data shows rise in cancers over two decades of war (https://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/national-security/article236413328.html)

Add that to the list of shit I wish I didn't know about. I swear we squander our special forces community like there is some unlimited supply of them and we fail to protect them in ways that require only the most basic due diligence. I know 18Bs get the respect but 18Ds are even harder to produce.
I didn't know him, I know a guy from his ODA, he thought Shurer walked on water, he was that kind of guy.

It's a shame for his family and the men who served with him first & foremost, but a great loss to our nation as well. You'd hope a guy awarded the CMH in his late '30's, would be around for several more decades, as an inspiration to the younger generations - especially for his sons.
On behalf of a grateful American, thank you for your service SSG Shurer.

That really sucks. I mean really sucks. Chernobyl has changed the worlds eco system and immune systems jacked up worldwide.

My thoughts, also.

After leaving the Army, he continued to serve our nation as a member of the US Secret Service.
Our nation is indeed poorer with his passing. :(
