View Full Version : 7.62x39 Short Barrel Performance

Does anyone have some information/charts showing the characteristics of the 7.62 out of shorter barrel lengths? I'm interested in velocity and gel impact performance.

Since the political scene is changing I was considering an AK pistol in 9.5" or 11.5". Then paying the $200 fee and adding a stock. Just wanted some information about the effectiveness of the round being that it will be considerably slower.

Feel free to say, "Wait until the ACR comes out, get a folding stock, and SBR it instead."

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but once something is registered as a pistol, I thought there was no way to get it reg'd as an SBR or even legally turn it back into a rifle? Might be a good question for the NFA forum there...

As far as stats for shorter barrels I've never come across any.

It's actually the other way around buckshot, once a rifle, always a rifle, but you can turn a pistol into a rifle or SBR.

Solid, I don't have any hard data, sorry.

Best edjumacated guess is that you're going to be looking at loosing about 50~75 fps for every inch chopped off.

Standard M43 or M67 ball is 123 gr. at about 2300 fps out of a standard 16" barrel.

I wouldn't depend on either the Russian or Chinese M43 boat tail FMJ to upset at lower velocities, and the M67 Yugoslav flat base would be very, very iffy.

I'd feel better about a decent soft point like the Winchester Power Point or one of the Russian 8M3 hollow points.

Any recommendations on 9.5" vs. 11.5"?

Gas piston system works well on both I assume.

This is the AK pistol I was looking at:

Any clue if a krinkov style front post, piston, and hand guard could be fit to this? I'd rather have the longer hand guard that is flush with the front post.

I'd say go with the longer one but that's just personal preference.

Either one is going to shoot pumpkin-sized fireballs in broad daylight.

I like this one a lot, but would it possible to add a side folder? I'm not an AK guy :(

Specifically a Bulgarian Krinkov style folder.

I think I just found the solution to what I am looking for. The Arsenal SLR-107UR... I'm just a year too late since no one has them. :(

Big Sky Guns has the 107URs in stock, and at a reasonable price for this gun. http://www.bigskyguns.com/7_62_39-Arsenal_SLR_107UR.html

That it will

I've shot it at 100m and it was ok but I've seen other guy's pistols doing better than mine. I also built mine from a kit with the worst barrel I could find so..

That will take some surgery. The rear trunnion will have to be removed and a whole lot of other work done (with a Bulgy side-folder in particular) but nothing impossible for sure.

I'll have to call/email them. They told me a week or so ago they would be out for a while.

Good find! I haven't seen with in stock status at a fair price.
