Class #2 Dates: November 9-11, 2007. (Fri-Sun)

Class description:
Larry Vickers;
“This class is in response to the low-light/white light/laser training that
Ken and I do in our normal classes. This training, which normally consists
of about 2 hours of low-light work, has been met with overwhelming positive
comments from students. Many leave the class saying that was the single
best part of the training. Ken and I have a unique approach in our
Low light training so the idea was born to do a special class. The ranges

Looking forward to finally training with these gentlemen, and meeting friends and supporters from the past and present. I'm trying to talk Steve and Eric into coming as well.

In the meantime, if anyone has any last minute gear requirements, from ammo to Woolrich and anything in between, let me know. I'll do everything I can to make sure that you can concentrate on fighting, not what gear you should have brought.

FYI - I'm not going to stop taking names for this class. I'm just going to keep taking names and adding them to the list. When it comes time to send in payments for the class I'll just start contacting the first twenty-four guys. After that I will just continue down the list until the class is filled.

This way I have a larger pool of interested guys and fewer hassles when it starts coming down to the wire. I used to do this for the Blackwater classes we did years ago and it was easier on me. I have no idea why I stopped, but were going back to it now.

Guys backing out give me more gray hairs than I need. I already have one wife, two ex-wives and three daughters (Ages 11-13). That’s enough potential trouble for any man. :D

It has not been a big problem yet, but I'm trying to avoid it ever being an issue.

Weapon reliability would be the #1 reason, and as Grant stated sometimes they can cause bigger issues.

Sorry I've been so quiet for the last 6 months around here.... Building a house while your wife is pregnant is not something I would recomend :( We move in tomorrow!!! :) The baby girl is doing great :D

I still plan on attending. Other than a factory ammo only requirment, any other parameters I need to plan for ammo-wise? Is M855/SS109 OK? And just for you guys I'll bring my 23# Sig DAO issued gun! (That's right, NOT a DAK)

Hello

Based on the number of deposits Larry has received (roughly 1/2) you have a very good chance of making it into the first class.

I'm going to be sending out a deposit & payment reminder email for class #1 tonight. If a few of those guys don't get off the ball soon they will be dropped to the stand-by list. We receive emails & PM's about this class all the time and the stand-by list is already fairly long.

Either way – I will let you know soon.

FYI: 3:00 PM Friday (May 11, 2007 - Day 1) - Holiday Inn parking lot

Ken & Larry are going to meet us there and then we will follow them to the range. This is the Holiday Inn discussed in the lodging info provided by Ken. Everybody should have received this by now. If you did not receive it or you need it again please contact me.

- Dinner is provided so you don't have to worry about it.

Hello Steve,

IF you want to wear armor that's up to you. The only place it will be required is in the Shoot House portion of the class (Pistol caliber only).

VA_Dinger
05-06-07, 23:09
Just so the armor issue doesn't get misunderstood again: You do not need your own vest or plates. They will be provided. Ken and Larry have plenty to go around and in enough sizes to fit everybody.

- IF you own and want to shoot your own pistol caliber carbine you can bring it but it's not required. Ken & Larry have loaners for this also.

Larry said not to worry about it, but if you want to shoot Grant's I would bring some.

My suggestion is to bring 50-100 9mm rounds just to be safe. It's not required, but might be a good idea.

VA_Dinger
05-07-07, 11:01
Correction: The shoot house portion is pistol caliber rated (9mm, .40, .45, etc) and is not limited to just 9mm.

I have edited my earlier posts to fix this mistake.

CarlosDJackal

I'll be shooting a .40 S&W pistol (Glock 35); so I'll bring some 9mm just in case.

Sorry if the date change caused anybody any problems- Ken had something come up that forced the date shift - the benefit is it will get darker sooner so we won't have to go til O'dark 30 in the morning to get the training accomplished

I would urge anyone sitting on the fence about this class to sign up - I hope to do at least one next year but there are no guarantees; Ken has stated publicly that he is going to seriously wind down his classes in a couple years and 'pass the torch' to me - what that means is oppurtunities to train with him will be less frequent and very rarely will we probably be able to do joint classes - a word to the wise; If you want in on this training don't wait thinking you will hit it later - there may or may not be a 'later'

I consider it an honor to do the classes with Ken and I am taking advantage of it as long as I can - but like all things in life they will eventually come to an end; one way or another

Hi everyone. Just wanted to chime in and say hey. I will be attending the November class in Marietta, sent my check in Wednesday. I am at a loss as to any actual details of the class (i.e. start time, meeting location etc) but I am not worried. I went to Marietta College so I have a pretty good idea of the town, and I will be back down there for homecoming 3 weeks prior to this class. If anyone needs anything local, let me know. I couldn't pass up getting back to my Marietta for some kick butt training that is local to me.

I am a Type 01 FFL and attorney. I do municpal prosecution work and gun rights work in Ohio for several of the advocacy groups you would recognize. I am a NRA trainer and do ccw training for Ohio and Utah. (Long story, still only one wife. :D )

I'm looking forward to this class. Famous instructors covering an area I have never focused on - nothing could be better.

I attended the first class with Larry and Ken. Although I've taken two carbine courses in the past, I've never done anything like this before. It's an eye opener and very challenging. If you thought you knew something about shooting in low light, you'll realize that you really didn't know anything before.

If you just want to learn more like me, take the class. Most encounters occur in low light so if you plan on going into harms way, definitely take the class!!

You guys are going to have a ton of fun and learn a bunch. Is anyone planning on shooting the class with an AK? I'd be interested to see if that presents any difficulties. I doubt it would, but I didn't test that theory myself.

If you don't love LaserGrips now, you will in a few short weeks!

Get an extra light and stick it somewhere where you can get to it. Don't learn the hard way by dropping your light while a bunch of guys with loaded guns are behind you waiting.

Bring along a smallish type LED or something for pasting targets at night. A fingerlight, or a keychain type LED on a neck lanyard are good for this. Maybe bring extras for the dummies like me who realize "Hey, a little light would be great right about now" at 10pm.

I don't envy you guys doing this in November weather. Good luck with that.

I've never been to Ohio in the winter, but I think it's safe to assume it's going to be on the cold side. Especially considering this class is being held after dark.

I still prefer it over the 109 degree days I've suffered through in South Hill.

Light fleece okay?
Its 90F at 0945 where I am now, and over 110 later in the day.

What sort of low are we looking at? - I'm wearing my CIRAS and all my go to war gear inc helmet - so I'm thinking I should be okay with a long sleve shirt underneath.

Or is it really cold?

Jay Cunningham
10-16-07, 04:01
The average temperature for that time of year is 45 degrees, with a high of 55 and a low of 35.

Not too bad... humidity might make it interesting, though.

Ok, I lived in Marietta for 4 years and 30 miles outside of Marietta for another 3+.

The weather will be....just about anything. This is the time of year where we will dress the kids in winter coats in the morning and put sun screen and shorts on them for the afternoon. Nights will likely be cold. Also, the area where the range is (the whole area for that matter) is hills. Just as soon as the sun goes behind the crest of a hill and you are in the shadow, the temperature seems to drop 10 degrees. Even in early october you can be out in the woods and get uncomfortable quick when the sun goes behind a crest.

If there is a high pressure system in the area, we will likely start to have frost at night, maybe even the first hard, killing frost. Keep in mind for the last few years we have been mowing the grass up through Thanksgiving, so the days can be quite comfortable and the nights quite nippy.

Biggest weather PITA is rain, especially that time of year. We often joked the unofficial town motto was "A nice place to rain." It is at the confluence of two rivers, the Ohio and the Muskingum, and even though folks say that should not matter that much, it can rain for 3-4 days straight, and not those afternoon thunderstorms, either. If we are in for rain, it will rain a lot. Good rain gear. Teaching a lot at the ranges down in the southern part of the state, I have a set of the cheapie Frog Togg rain gear in my range bag full time. Cheap, folds down to a size that can fit in a ziplock, durable and breatheable. If you are unfamiliar, it is basically like Tyveck, can usually find it on Ebay for $35 for a set of trousers and zipping jacket. It worked excellent last year at BW for my 5 day class.

I'll try and write up a chamber of commerce type of thing for folks going down early. Local restaurants, breakfast buffets etc. Anyone with any questions about hotels, travel plans etc, please don't hesitate to ask, I should have good local intel for you all.

Also please keep in mind that Ohio's laws on transporting firearms are FUBAR and our Supreme Court in the last few weeks just basically said "tough nuts" and upheld the laws. DO NOT LOAD MAGAZINES EXCEPT FOR A LAWFULL CARRY GUN! We have very screwed up ideas about LEOs and "on duty" to the point where a local police officer in the last month was in uniform on the way to roll call in 20 minutes and the state pension board declared he was not on duty or acting in an official capacity. You will be fine once you get to Marietta/Washington County, but PLEASE, if you have to drive across any stretch of Ohio to get here, don't load carbine magazines! We really are that screwed up!! Anyone worried about anything, please ask.

Looking forward to the class!

Thanks for the heads up.

Any information you can share is much appreciated.....

I had no idea loaded magazines were such a no-no. I'll be sure to keep all mine unloaded.

I've always heard that Ohio's gun laws are a pain in the a$$. Traveling there makes me a tad nervous.

What is the Comfort Inn like in Marietta?

Grant,

Thanks for the offer, but my agency was fronting the ammo for me so if they fall through, I'll just use the AK. Thanks again though.

With the caveat that it has been probably 5 years since I've stayed in a hotel down there....

The comfort inn is nice. It is actually an old Marriott or Ramada that was converted through new ownership in 1988 or so. My family would always stay there during college, we had a leadership conference there for 3 days, nice banquest facilities. They are anti-gun, to my knowledge they are the only hotel in Marietta that does not allow ccw holders to stay.

Pretty much any chain hotel is going to be fine in Marietta, there is only one "lodge" that we used to avoid, and that was associated with a truckstop just up route 7. (evergreen?)

The Lafayette is wonderful if the price difference isn't too much for you. It is a real old, historical hotel and the rooms can vary because they weren't real concerned about maximizing profit per square foot back when it was built. It is also the only hotel located "downtown" within walking distance of all the campus haunts. (it is a private college, high tuition. When you think "campus" restaurant think "trendy" not "dive.") All other hotels are out route 7/pike street and you will be driving anyplace.

The econo lodge really isn't bad. the holiday inn is nice, that is where the Bush/Quayle campaign was headquartered when they came through. The holiday in in Parkersburg closed this summer, and they didn't tell anyone who had reservations! The on in mineral springs is still open, and has an indoor pool.

I was reading through the gear requirements for this course, and I did not see a requirement to bring a flashlight with a red filter. I've attended other low light courses and competitions where some of the shooters did not bring a red flashlight. As a result, they pasted targets and loaded mags using their bright white lights, thus destroying everyone's night vision.

As a courtesy to the other shooters, the students for this class may consider bringing a red filtered flashlight with them.

Hey Guys,

I just reserved a room at the Lafayette w/ a government discount a standard room was $58 for Thurs night and $68 for Fri/Sat (The gov didn't rate much of a discount...)

We have taken a decided turn, weather wise, since I last wrote. It is cold. We've had frost three mornings already. Forecast for next Thursday is low in the very low thirties and high in the very low forties.

Again, keep in mind, the changes will be exaggerated and quick down in the hills. Just as soon as that sun gets behind a ridge it will drop 5+ degrees.

No real reliable word on rain. Typically atlantic coast hurricanes don't get us rain, the carribean ones do. So I don't think we will get any delayed rain from the passing of the hurricane up the coast.

With it being cold, make sure to pack at least one layer of wool. Fleece is wonderful but it doesn't rate if it gets wet. Remember, if we are in for rain, it typically rains pretty seriously. </mother lecture>

For those needing directions to the Lafayette, when you get off the interstate, head west on Pike/Rt7. Take it until it dead ends into first street. The hotel is right in front of you at this intersection, little fountain deal to your left. They have parking right there at the confluence of the two rivers on your left or turn up first street to your right and there is another lot on your left.

For those going to the Holiday Inn/Comfort Inn/Econo Lodge, get off the interstate and head east. All of these are within a quarter mile of the interstate. Holiday Inn is on the North side of 7/Pike, other two on the south side.

For the folks coming in Thursday, probably the best deal for Friday breakfast is the Shoneys/Big boy right across the street from the McDonalds, just to the west of the interestate, north side of Rt 7/Pike. Breakfast bar cannot be beat for value. Saturday and Sunday breakfast at the Lafayette used to be just legendary, it is a wonderful buffet. made to order omlettes, fresh waffles etc. We ate there about 3 years ago and the quality had started to slip, but it was still real good. Higher cost than shoneys. At the Lafayette the breakfast is in the "gun room" which features, or did, KY rifles on the walls. Brownies bakery burned down years ago, unfortunately. WONDERFUL stuff. McHappys donuts on 7/Pike near the Taco Bell on teh south side has fresh donuts in the morning, half price on the day old donuts.

For dinner, anything from junky fastfood to nice sit down Italian. If you can spend for a nice dinner, Levee House is wonderful. Right on the river, small, intimate place. This is on the south side of Rt7/Pike about at the intersection of 3rd street. The Adventure Galley (american cuisine) is another nice place. A block north of Rt7/Pike on 2nd. (Assuming it is still open, it had changed ownership 5 years ago and quality started to slip.) There is a mexican place on 2nd 1.5 blocks north of Rt7/Pike. (or there was.) Good food, good margaritas. Out toward the hotels near the interstate they used to have a damons (maybe IN one of the hotels?) Just across the river in Williamstown (take the third street bridge, not the interstate bridge) there used to be a nice pizza place just to your left. Keep in mind Ohio has draconian laws on guns and booze, even a gas station that sells for carryout can be considered the same as a bar. Again, I don't think you will get hassled by Marietta PD or Washington Co.

There are no home football games or other sporting events this weekend, no traffic worries. Crew team is out of town in Philly. Should be a quiet weekend.

For a hookup on a small light for night....dicks sporting goods and several other chain stores sell something called the cyclops, little 3 led light using button batteries that clips to your ball cap visor. $14. A few dabs of red or blue nail polish and you have nifty low light LED that won't burn your eyes at a cost that won't punish you.

Looking forward to meeting everyone. I'll be the poohbear shaped attorney :)

Again, anyone needs ANYTHING, ask. I've done time in this part of the world and was chief assistant prosecutor for the county just to the north and should be able to help out, or know who can help you out.

Let's all pray/sacrifice virgins to whatever deity we pray to that the rain and snow don't come back.

BTW -- Because of a prank by some of my co-workers (a real brain trust, let me tell you...) I have just come into possession of a life-sized cardboard cutout of Paris Hilton.

If Mr. Vickers or Mr. Hackathorn could use a hostage target for the course, then Ms. Hilton might actually perform her first useful service to humanity....

Are you suggesting that Paris would be a "no-shoot"?

Come now! Of course she would be a no shoot!

I would NEVER suggest that perhaps we should use her as a sight in target, or a walk back target, or even a prize for the person with the most window licking moments!

That would be....well.....wrong.

I'm actually sort of worried about driving through three states with Paris Hilton, an assault weapon, and about 2500 rounds of ammo in my trunk.

I come in Friday morning. I had to cancel a dentist appointment for Friday morning I made when we were starting at 3 p.m. rather than noon ;(

Staying at the Lafayette in one of the cabin rooms.

The weather has turned just absolutely miserable. Today the windchill was low 20s. If you are looking for weather predictions I'd go off of WTAP out of parkersburg, right across the river, rather than Weather.com. Call me a cynic, but I've been in a crew shell about to swamp into the Muskingum with 5 inches of water on days weather.com called dry.

Also keep in mind that we are going to experiencing the lows, not the highs. I can't explain it adequately enough, but as soon as the sun goes past a ridgeline it is like 10 degrees cooler, or so it seems.

Here is what WTAP is showing now.

Thursday Night: A slight chance of showers after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Friday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 52.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Veterans Day: Mostly sunny, with a high near 58.

Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42.

This is a class with lots of repeat value. A fellow could take the same course half a dozen times and still learn more.

Night fighting is such a woefully under-taught topic that there is a vast world of information and practice that has yet to be probed by most people.
