View Full Version : In praise of my favorite gun, my Beretta 92G-SD

For years I avoided Beretta 92s. Having been brought up on P7M8s, the grip felt really large and at the time I thought a large grip was a bad thing in a combat pistol. 3-4 years back I was in a class with Earnest Langdon and he was singing the praises, so I started looking again. But I still didn't jump in. But then, my buddy Wes bought one of the Wilson B92s and decided he wanted to swap it. I tried it out and it was pretty good, but I had a CZ SP-01 that I felt pretty much covered the same category (high cap bullet hose than can be left loaded with out a holster without being concerned (DA/SA)).

Anyway, a few years back a burglar stole my SP-01 and then I decided to give the B92G-SDs I saw at Barrow's a try. I don't know what the difference was, but the G-SD felt better. I even compared it against my friends SP-01 and even with the slightly lighter weight we both agreed, the Beretta was smoother and faster on target on follow up shots. Since then I have shot the living snot out of it. I actually had a back up for a while, but sold it a few months back when I decided to by some acreage.

While I have owned it I have owned 1911s, HKVP9, Glock G19 G5, CZ P10, Sig 320, M&P 9C 2.0. All of them were, for the most part, good. But I just don't care for the plastic striker guns. I do, however still love my 1911. I shoot my B92G faster, and more accurately. I ran a lot of ammo through different guns, and for me the B92 kept coming up on top.

That being said, I don't carry autoloaders daily. My daily carry is a regular old J-frame with laser grips. Being self employed and a city court solicitor I can carry my handgun pretty much anywhere in GA (I keep it sane, but I pretty much carry everywhere, including sitting in my recliner at home---so a J-frame is pretty much the best choice for me). The B92 is basically my beside the bed and home defense/doomsday piece.

I keep a X400 with DG switch, 17 round with extra 17 rounder just in case ready for bump in the night duty, its main job being to get me to my 870 or M4 is stuff has gone truly sideways. She had right under 8000 rounds and I have swapped the Recoil spring once about 5k ago. It may be time to do it again.

I was hoping you would post an update on this thing. Great to hear it is still running like a sewing machine.

My Brig Tac and SD are two of my favorite guns.

I've had both a 92G-SD and a Wilson 92G BrigTac and both were the nicest DA/SA autos I've ever owned. The only nicer 9mm I've owned was a jamomatic Dan Wesson V-Bob (it was a bare stainless steel gun and I understand, now, that you need a special stainless steel lube with Dan Wesson 1911s - part of why I don't own any Dan Wessons any longer). But I don't see any 9mm other than maybe an EDC X9 taking the place of, "favorite pistol," away from my 1911.

I've wanted a Beretta. When I was shopping for a new 9 I bought a Glock 19 Gen 5, I never thought I'd buy a plastic pistol. I'm sort of looking for another 9, I love the Glock but I'm still intrigued with the Beretta.

I'm surprised you haven't sold it. LOL

Better put a leash on the SD or it's going to walk away from you just like the SP01 and the Wilson.

That is a great variant of a classic, accurate, and reliable platform.

That series is well represented on one of my pistol walls.

The grip is the same size as a Glock 19.

The G-SD was one of my grail guns. I had pretty much given up on finding one, then the Brig-Tac came out, so I bought one. A few months later, an SD showed up on GB, so it lives with me now. I love it, but my M9-A3G is quickly approaching the same level of affection. I'm always on the lookout for another.

Nothing but love for the Beretta 92 platform. I had a 92FS Brig back in the mid-90s, stupidly sold it to buy something else. Just replaced it with a 92A1 with LTT grips and TJIAB. It's amazing.

I've been meaning to take my 92F out. It was the first pistol I ever bought and the only one I owned for quite some time, so it got shot a lot. Over 16k though it. Lately, not as much but she'll always hold a special place in my safe.

I really do need to take her out again.

Good stuff Greg, and bonus points for being dog approved.

Beretta noobish question for you though if I may, (or anyone else for that matter), is there anything other than the beefier slide, decock only, rarity (only recently discovered this) features that make this model more desirable than say a 92/M9A1/A3, or the Wilson? It has been ALOT of years since I really paid attention to Berettas.

Reason for asking is that my consolidation plan has me streamlining down to pretty much 1911's and revolvers, I do think I should have at least one or two 'hi-cap wonder nines" and would prefer a metal framed gun since 99% of its use will be fun at the range/nostalgia cool factor, night stand duty.

Thanks for taking the time to post this up, always appreciate your perspective.

Sam
10-24-18, 12:01
Norseman:

I'm not Greg. But as a long time owner of a G-SD since early 2004 I think I can help.

Your assessment is correct. The SD also has interchangeable front sight as it uses a dovetail, partial grip checkering on the front strap and back strap, beveled magazine well, tritium night sights. Those features are not available on the plain 92FS. I believe the lower frame assembly of the M9A1 is the same as the G-SD.

The A3 has the Vertec grip frame and slide, of course it has the threaded barrel.

Norseman
10-24-18, 12:32
Thanks Sam, that is helpful. Guess that explains why this particular variation seems to be pretty coveted and not as easily found, at least by my cursory research so far. I guess it also explains why Wilson did what they did, that's a pretty solid feature set on the G-SD.

thanks again.

In a way, the G-SD is a poor man's version of the Wilson's Brigadier Tactical.

Ironically, the Wilson seems to be the cheaper alternative, which is bizzaro world to me. but admittedly have only looked at a couple of places.

Sam
10-24-18, 13:26
How do you figure that? the SD's price is a little over $1000 and the Brigadier Tactical is $1195 for the base model.

Any place that try to sell the SD over $1K is obviously jacking up the price.

Apparently a little more due diligence is needed on my part.

Armslist was the first to pop up on my initial search and had one listed for $1200, but after going back and looking at the listing again it appears to be an older listing which I did not catch the first go around. Now that I have dug a little bit more the prices are in line with what you said with 1K-ish being the norm, but most show out of stock.

I will keep digging though, thanks again.

Sam
10-24-18, 15:39
Be patience in your search. You can find new SDs for around $1K and maybe used ones in the 900s. You can also find used Wilson Brigadier Tactical for $200 or more less than the new price tag.

Of course if you just got to have one today, sure, pay $1200 - 1400, it's only money right?

I'm waiting for Greg to sell me his for $250 when he needs money to pay his property tax.

Yeah, not in a huge hurry, this thread just happened to be conveniently timed with one of the possibles I am currently looking at/comparing so thought I would ask for some points from those more knowledgeable than me on the Beretta front. Plus I need to sell a handful first, not for the funding per se, just to keep on task. If I bought right now, I know my idiot self would go into "new shiny bobble" mode and loose motivation to cull the heard.

Thanks again Sam. I will pull back now and hopefully gather more nuggets from you Beretta guru's.

92G-SDs are very hard to find and seemed to be priced crazy. I think Beretta may have quit making them once they started pushing out the Wilson badged guns. If you like the skinny trigger guard and the (to me, pointlessly) shortened barrel then the Wilson is a better value in the current market. Plus the Wilson has fancy grips. No question, I would not pay extra to get the SD. Between the two, if the price is the same, I prefer the SD (and since I sold Sam my old Wilson I have experience with both) mainly because I prefer the beefier frame on the SD with the thicker trigger guard, etc and the standard barrel.

And of course there is this sexy thing...https://www.langdontactical.com/92-elite-ltt/

I was wondering how that grip would work on the Beretta. My right thumb gets abraded by the slide serrations on my 1911 when I use the thumb high grip.
Not sure if I need to shoot more and develop a callus, or modify my grip.

I had a stainless Target Springer 1911 9mm (years ago) and the serrations were sharp and abraded my thumb.

I learned to move my thumb slightly away from the slide.

my problem with beretta is my trigger finger contacts my support hand and my primary hand will get cut by the non ejection side of the beavertail.

I will try and over come both.

Substitute Sig 226/229 in there and delete the Esq part, that pretty much sums me up. I DO love the B92 series though and have always wanted one. Now that I have my sigs where I want them, I think the 92 will be my next addition. Yours is BEAUTIFUL.

Funny... Having basically matured with DA/SA metal framed weapons, I just shoot them much better than the plastic striker stuff. I've tried to convert to strikers, and am coming back full circle to metal DA/SA. Others mileage will vary.

After my early P7M8 obsession Sig 229s were my goto guns from the late 90s to early mid 2000s when I got into Glocks and 1911s. I had one in .357 sig that was my carry gun and a spare in .40 so I could blast with slightly cheaper ammo when supplies were low. I also had an old school 228 in 9mm. So I guess I do have a lot of good old da/sa love in my history.

Nice. Back in 1996 I traded my W. German 9mm P226 for a German .357 P229 and carried it as my primary LEO gun for the rest of my career. I FINALLY just replaced my old 226 with a Legion. I still have that 229... She's a safe queen now, but I'm never trading that one away.

I have both, LTT (Full House Custom) and Wilson Combat Cen-Tac. I much prefer the LTT. Langdon's trigger work is smoother than Wilson Combat. I prefer a square notch rear sight to the U notch also, and Wilson Combat does not make a Square Notch rear for the Cen-Tac. The LTT is also a better value, if you just get the trigger work on the basic LTT.

An LTT Elite is on my short list, cannot decide if I want the night sights or fiber optic though. I can’t abide a pistol that doesn’t shoot to the sights, so the fiber optic front being a Dawson Precision part will probably get the nod. I can get different heights to regulate zero at 25 yards to shoot to the top of the front sight. I find that gives a zero where I drive the dot closer in, and can utilize the top of the front sight post to make longer shots by taking a 6-o’ clock hold at 25 yards, and then figuring out my holds to 100 yards based on the ammo.

I know for sure I want the trigger work, and NP3. Tempted to go for the carry bevel to also get the Cerakote slide. I wonder if Ernest will ship the pistol with your choice of grips installed? I want his grips but not in black, prefer the black cherry, grey, and green in that order.

I get my profit sharing bonus from ye old BNSF Railway in January.... I think I know how it will be utilized. Any reason I shouldn’t? Talk me out of it. I want to carry appendix (yeah a 92 is big but I might be able to make it work), and therefore want a DA/SA pistol for enhanced safety margin.

I only own 1 Beretta but it is an M9A3. I love it. It is not a G model but that does not matter since I have the kit for it. And it drops in!
I also put a Beretta Inox solid stainless guide rod in it. I like the fact that front and rear sights can be changed, I like the standard rail so I can mount a light or a laser, the threaded barrel, D spring, and the comical FDE finish! The vertec grip is cool as is the checkering.

I would like a heavier slide though. The brigadier slide is epic.
I have a full spring kit for it and lots of recoil springs and a locking block kit too. I am keeping it forever. Smooth, accurate and also (to me) hilarious in appearance. I think if you like 92 series guns it is a must own. I like the other 92 series guns too and the grip is perfect for me. The vertec is a bit on the small side but the angle is fantastic as is the checkering so I don't use the houge grip.

Highly recommended. Also the original poster chose.....wisely.

Still my favorite blaster. I have picked up fancy 1911s and a short lived fling with a Glock and a CZ p10, but this remains the only 9mm pistol I have any real interest it. I just did a quick scan of my logs and it looks like I am a little bit north of 12k (this is probably an underestimate, but I am far too lazy to go through my log and I often forget to add rounds I fire) now with a steady diet of steel garbage. A month or so ago I used a steel wool pad to rub the rest of the finish off the barrel so I could save my self the expense of buying a Langdon.

This gun is an amazing shooter, and only fights with my USP 45 as my beside the bed blaster.

A month or so ago I used a steel wool pad to rub the rest of the finish off the barrel so I could save my self the expense of buying a Langdon.
This gun is an amazing shooter, and only fights with my USP 45 as my beside the bed blaster.

My biggest gripe is finding compatible holsters. I have several, I just don’t really care for them. What are you using?

You looking for concealment, or just a holster in general?

I have a conceal carry holster I like. More outside the waste band and with light would be nice.

Safariland 3280. It will fit ANY 92-derivative, with literally ANY weaponlight. They can still be found from time-to-time. Safariland realized they screwed up by making an obsolescence-proof holster.

Nice to know what you love. Im so ADD on my handguns it's stupid. But I shoot the variety all the time so I hope Im GTG with whatever. Never can be as good as a master of one. But you have to live with who you are. Handguns fight to the rifle, I understand. I have handguns distributed throughout, but my M4 is bedside.

Good stuff. Beautiful rig. It looks the way it should look...well used.

The VP9 is my #1 though.
