I am getting ready to buy a Glock. I already own a XD-40 and was going to buy a G22 because of the ammo, plus I carried a G22 for my entire career and am comfortable with it.

However, when I was looking around, I got reminded about the 10 mm.

I know the velocity and energy is higher with the 10 mm, but is it worth the cost. My uses for the gun will be targeting, 2 and 3 gun matches, and on the very rare occasion I go hunting I will carry it as a backup.

My carry and conceal is my XD and the only time the Glock would be used in self defense is in the case of civil unrest.

Again, with this in mind is the 10 mm worth the extra cost and the lack of ability for common ammo between it and the XD?

thanks guys

you've already got a 40 that you're comfortable shooting, why not diversify?

i'm hoping to pick up either a G20 or 29 for trail carry (predators of 2 and 4 legged variety) shortly.

should fill in all the gaps my G19 doesn't.

i'm just not really hot on having a half dozen guns that all do the same thing.. :o

if you reload i guess 10mm is a really versatile caliber. i've yet to get into handgun reloading myself though.

You do make a good point and I should get into more diversity, but is the cost difference of the ammo really worth it?

I can get a .45 that will fill the diversity void and the ammo is more affordable. So I guess my question is the 10 mm that great of a round?

The 10mm will do things the .40 won't. The question you need to ask yourself is, do you care about any of those things?

For playing games, there's no benefit. For "defensive" use, full power 10mm is certainly more powerful but whether it's really making enough difference to justify the greater recoil (and cost) is arguable at best.

For hunting, it's a no brainer, the 10mm is a winner.

For having something "different," again the 10mm is incomparable.

Another option to think about when going with the Glock 20, you can get replacement barrels in .40 S&W (the G20 is a pussycat when you shoot the .40 from it) , .357 Sig, and 9 X 25. Also, if you really wanted, you can get another slide assembly in .45 ACP.

My personal off duty gun is a Glock 20 that is customized for my preferences. I like the extra power of the 10mm. The ammo is a bit harder to find, but for me, it is worth it.

So if I understand you correctly, you can put a G22 barrel in a G20 along with the mag and you can shoot .40 ca. If that is true, I am sold.

Thanks

Actually, you need to get a Glock 20 barrel in .40 S&W from Jarvis, Bar-Sto, or Lone Wolf. You can use the standard G20 mags.

The G22 barrel will not fit in the G20 slide properly.

I didn't realize that could be done.

Thanks for the information.

No problem! Ever since I switched to the Glock 21SF for my duty weapon and use my G20 for off duty, my co-workers shake their heads in dis-belief. I use to carry a customized 1911.

I never looked back. :)

Here are some pics of my G20.

I like the versatility of 10mm. Double Tap makes 135's that go 1608 fps and 230's that go 1120 fps.

HSM and BVAC make 10mm ammo at reasonable-ish prices. I just bought 165gr for $17 for 50 rounds.

I've had a G20 for about 14 years now and it is a great gun. It was better when it first came out because folks were loading good, high-powered ammo for it. Now the choices are more limited and look a lot like high-end .40SW stuff. The only drawbacks I see to a 10mm are:
1) cost of ammo
2) availability of ammo
3) quality of ammo (being real 10mm loads)

As long as you're happy getting the good ammo from Double Tap and Buffalo Bore you're good to go.

And word on a G20SF model? I see G20SF mags for sale...

I have a G22 and think it's a great all around piece...

That said, I am patiently waiting (with ammunition, extra magazines and Ghost connector already in hand) for the introduction of a G20SF with standard Glock rail and standard magazine release...

Any word on a G20SF model?

Can't come soon enough for me...
