View Full Version : What handgun calibers are you shooting regularly (from handguns) these days?

I haven't been shooting middle calibers lately.

I've been shooting:

1. .45 acp
2. .32 acp
3. .25 acp
4. .44 Russian / .44 Special

3000rds of 40vs9 makes it a wash cost wise.

True statement. Worthless investment. I shoot the following:

9mm
22LR if it counts

Though I will be reunited with my 1911 shortly so I'll add in .45.

9mm 99.9% of the time ! 22s once in a Blue Moon. Have not shot my 1911 in close to a year! :( Always had a 40S&W but sold all my 40 stuff a couple years ago to cut down on gear/bullets/etc. Load just 9mm & 45ACP now for handguns.

I feel the same. I recently jumped on a Glock 35 PD trade from Sportsman’s in “good condition.” This this had a few scuffs in the grip from carry, but other than that, this gun maybe saw quals plus one additional range trip, still had glowing sights and a box. Was a hell of a deal. Now is the time to pick those up

Yea I hear ya. I have an old S&W Highway Patrolmen 357 that was my Dads thats pretty friggin sweat but just never take it out. I have ton of ammo for it and probably have 2K++ 38spcl cases but just never get around to switching my Dillon over, maybe in the dead of Winter when I'm way ahead on 9mm ! :p

I always shoot 9x19 and 22 lr mainly. 380, 9mm Mak, 38/357, 45 ACP and Colt occasionally this year.

I seem to shoot rifles quite a bit more.

About the only handguns I shoot "regularly" are my carry guns and those are currently all in 9 mm. I have a pile of .38's and .357's, .44's and .45 Auto's....but they don't get shot a whole bunch.

My options are:
22LR
25acp
357
45colt
45acp
44mag
9mm
40s&w
10mm

My shooting is 80% 9mm
10% 40, with most of that being minimum power factor loads
5% 10mm and 45 ACP
2 1/2 % 357 and 45 LC
With the rest together being the other 2.5%

No, I didn’t calculate the actual percentages.
Just winged it.
With 357 and 45 Colt probably 50% Carbine,
And 40 and 9 probably 10% Carbine.

I want to shoot 22 more,
But it’s no fun with a single action revolver, the rate of malfunctions with various semi autos pistols, conversion kits, carbines etc, gets old.

Mostly 9X19 here, my .40 and .45 semiautos don’t get out much.

Starting to shoot my .22LR match pistol again since .22LR is readily available now.

Planning to meet my old pistol coach for a deer hunt in fall of 2019 on the north shore of Lake Superior at his cabin. Seriously considering doing a handgun hunt, so my .454 Casull is going to be seeing a lot of range time working up a good deer load and then practicing with it out to at least 100 yards. Kind of looking forward to it, it’s nice to shoot something that doesn’t require me to police up brass all over the place.

Due to a "layoff" (similar to the coyote in the old Roadrunner cartoons), I am getting back up to speed, one day at a time. I have always believed in the .22LR subcaliber option for"big" guns. So at the moment I mostly shoot a Model 18 Smith, a well worn Ruger Standard Auto, and a Smith 15-22. As things improve I'll get back to 9mm, .38 Special, and 5.56.

.22 and 9MM almost every range visit.

Either .40 or .45 about half the time. I was on a .45 kick for a while but getting back to shooting my favorite Glock 23 more these days.

Also shoot revolvers (.38 mainly) time to time...

That's what I decided about .22 LR years ago and I sold my last one. (A 10/22)

.22 in a single-action revolver is so slow to reload it eats into the fun.
.22 in double action revolver requires a heavy pull to set off primers. Makes them difficult to shoot well and less gun. Or you have misfires.
.22 in the majority of semi-auto rifles and pistols has it's share of malfunctions, duds, they get dirty fast and if not cleaned will have more malfunctions.
.22 in lever action rifle and pump rifles (I've never fired a pump .22) isn't too bad. There will be some bent-up ammo at some point, though.

.22 rimfire is at it's best in bolt action rifles, single shot rifles, and in those very few full-size semi-auto pistols that run well (for a .22) on quality ammunition. Some of the Ruger's and Beretta's namely. Especially with suppressors.

I haven't owned a .22 rimfire firearm in many years and don't miss them at all. If I were God .22 LR would be as popular as .22 Short is today and in it's place would be .25 acp. Ballistics would be the same but reliability much higher.

1. 9mm
2. 38 spl
3. .22 lr

This is a shift based on recent purchases. A Glock 19, a S&W 422 pro, and a Browning Buckmark.

My gotos are typically .45ACP, .41 RemMag, and .22 lr.

9mm, .22, .38/.357 and .44M I was loading for the wheel guns but don't shoot them enough to bother. I loaded all of my components for them and had can fulls of ammo, down to a few .50 cans full. I would turn my son loose with them and he would shoot until he was bored. Never loaded 9mm, fortunate not to have to. I keep my pistol shooting time extremely directed towards core skills.

Ron at Battlefield Las Vegas mentioned in one of his posts that the Advantage Arms Glock 17 adapter kits ran very well. They also used the Sig Mosquito and Walther 22’s but Some had issues. He also mentioned they only use plated bullets in a separate post...

https://www.ar15.com/forums/handguns/-/4-160140/?#i1742179
“The guns that we have replaced are Sig Mosquitos and Walther P-22's. We must have returned at least 12-15 of each model since opening. We retired all the Sig and Walther .22's and replaced them with the Glock .22 conversions. The RSO's love them because the continue to run and don't become Jam-O-Matic's if they don't get cleaned every other day. The Sig's and Walther's suffered catastrophic failures of the slide. The Sig's cracked at the narrow portion of the ejection port and the Walther's cracked about an inch from the muzzle.

I used to feel much the same, but since I’ve stepped up my cleaning regiment (rarely used to clean my .22’s) and run CCI Mini Mags and Federal AutoMatch almost exclusively, most of my issues went away.

Both my .22’s are Ruger, the 22-45 and SR22. My buddy shoots a Walther and a S&WM&P and since switching his ammo to MiniMags, he’s seeing a lot less issues as well (but he still runs them a lot between cleanings, so when they get gunked up, they start choking....his cue to clean them...)

When the nest emptied, I made the decision to limit handgun chamberings to 9x19, .38/.357 and 22LR. I regretted it fewer times every year until I stopped regretting it at all. We so seldom shoot revolvers nowadays that for all practical purposes, the wife and I are essentially down to 9x19 and .22LR.

I never used to understand the old codgers who kept things simple; now I am one of them.

9mm. 4x's a year i'll shoot .45 ACP (Winchester 3Gun 230Gr) at GSSF heavy metal because up until very recently the field was uncrowded. I won two guns in that manner. Selected a G17 & 19 both Gen5.

One last point...since this is a ‘pistol’ thread. I was introduced to the CMMG .22 AR conversion bolt by a friend who has a 8 inch barrel AR pistol. He runs the piss out of that sucker and it rarely (never that I’ve seen) has any failures. And he runs shit ammunition based on what I’ve seen.

I’ve since bought a conversion bolt for my carbines, but if you have a 5.56 pistol, these are a great way to shoot cheap.

The vast, vast majority of my handgun shooting is with 9mm. The reason being is that, handgun shooting doesn't come naturally to me and I'm not as good as I should be, so I tend to focus almost exclusively on shooting my carry or HD gun in order to be more proficient. A few times a year I might shoot my Browning Hi Power as well.
I have a .38 J -frame that I shoot fairly regularly in the warmer months when I'm more apt to occasionally carry it in lieu of a bigger gun. During this time of year, when I'm unlikely to carry it, it doesn't get shot much.

Every now and again I will shoot my Glock 23 but I dislike both the gun and the .40 cartridge and have no intention of carrying it so I shoot it very rarely.

Basically I actually own very few handguns, and don't really enjoy handgun shooting that much, thus I tend to do almost all my shooting with the ones I might conceivably need for "serious" purposes.

Hard to go wrong with the Smith. I have an old Single Six convertible, It's nice, but I rarely shoot it anymore. I just picked up a 3" LCRx in 22LR that's pretty sweet, though. It's weights, like, nothing.

Stack in a bunch of 22LR now while it's available and (relatively) cheap. I don't have a lot of warm fuzzies that that'll last as we move into next year and early 2020.
