View Full Version : Time to Revive and relaunch a term: Group Think

Progressives have played too long on the "Liberal" name and 'Progressive' has lost its distinction when you have crazy people like AOC out there. Due to the MSM-educational complex, the term 'socialist' has lost the negative connotation that 'fascist' has as a parallel.

The left has been moving away from individual rights towards identity politics for decades as they bring one group into conflict with another group. You don't have rights, the group you belong to confer rights (and wrongs) to you. You'd be able to most aptly call these people 'collectivists', which is a truly chilling title for anyone who understands history, but like 'socialism', it has lost its relevance.

So the word to best describe the left now?

Group Think

Everyone knows its bad, even if they don't know the actual business genesis of it in the 80s and 90s. It more aptly describes what the left is doing- sacrificing individual rights for the betterment of groups.

We have to fight the Group Think that is taken hold of the Democrat party.

Hell, they can't even get pronouns or gender settled? Why should we trust them to glom us all together?

Who wants to join the Borg?
Who's down with being part of the faceless many?

Do you stand for yourself, or what you're told?

We studied phenomena such as group think in management classes when I was going to college in the 70's and 80's.

Not too surprisingly, those who understand the concept would use most internet forums as examples.

In most forums opposing viewpoints are actively suppressed, and a clique of those with 'infallible' knowledge holds sway. Critical thought and examination are suppressed, at times folks who hold opposing views actually refrain from participating in discussion in order to maintain their membership in the group.

As a result, the holders of 'infallible' knowledge receive more and more feedback that their views are correct and become even less willing to consider opposing views. In communications theory this stage is know as the 'steel-trap syndrome.'

The end result is dogma spouted by members of the group, and no one is more surpized, or unwilling to admit error, when they are proved wrong.

Just my observation.

Whoa.. sounds a lot like GD :D

I can't say that thought didn't enter my mind, but it also sounds like dang near any forum I've been on.

I've also seen groups come apart at the seams when someone decided they didn't want to play anymore and the other members who had been keeping their mouths shut came out of hiding.

We saw a mini version of that at work in GD, when President Trump directed ATF to ban the bump stocks. All of a sudden more people became vocal about their true feelings.

I been called a heartless jackbooted thug and a bleeding heart hippie all in the same day on many occasions so I know I am doing it right.

Check out the NPC meme I actually believe in the theory that God just said “I’m too old and rich to keep giving folks souls all damn day” and literally made up scripts that some people never deviated from. Like...no matter what they are only capable of saying the same things.

I firmly believe the one true God spends more time with his favorite and chosen people on another planet light years away where they do nothing but learn and teach, never grew too wise, never had the first murder, never told the first lie. Never killed a messiah. Never conflated His words with politics or lies. Truly God’s Chosen People.

I mean He gave up on this shithole eons ago and the overwhelming abundance of scripted, one dimensional NPCs is proof of that. We on autopilot brah. We on rails.

You either hate the Orange Man or you were literally born with a beard and an M4.

There is no inbetween.
No inbetween

N O I N B E T W E E N

So....just do what I do and side quest a lot. The main campaign is super lame

There has been no better example of "Group Think" than the whole "He's not my President", "Russians stole the election for Trump" and "Hillary got cheated out of the Presidency."
We've not seen the end of the repercussions of this tripe yet and it's pushed the Left further toward Socialism.

This to me sums it up nicely. Well done.

Group think is status quo in today's world, period. Go anywhere, into any genre, sub culture whatever and it will rear its ugly head, don't believe me, just take a hard look at the gun culture today as a very small example.

People do not want to think for themselves anymore. For some reason that has become to hard and taboo. The heard mentality has become to entrenched. We have become a society where individualism is only accepted if it is not too individualized.

Logic and facts don't seem to apply anymore. Not sure if there is a way to combat the problem really, we are a group species after all.

What one group deems unacceptable, another will deem perfect, thus continuing the cycle that has probably always been in motion from the beginning, politics or otherwise.

Me personally, I try to use logic, objectivity, and optimism in everything I do. If that puts me on the fringe of current society so be it. The view is better out here anyway.

Hive mind. They want do away with free will. It's freedom versus subjugation. More and more people rely on the media to tell them what to do and how to feel.

I don't know what happened to my post replying to you that, yeah, you got it. Just using another example showing that it is pretty common.

I like to think of myself as being an objective thinker, as a result I try to research both sides of most issues.

One of the reasons I like the Real-Clear-Politics website. I read an article on one side of the issue, close it, click down one, and generally find an opposing viewpoint. The biggest problem I have is that there are generally some legit thoughts on both sides of the issue.

Owww! Makes my head hurt, I have to apply critical thought and choose a position.

If you do this very often you can see the appeal of just saying 'I like ol' FromMyColdDeadHand, so I'll just take his position.' Presto! Heavy lifting done.

Human nature.

That is a good example of group think within one sect.

4 D chess claims amongst other deflection are the examples of group think in the other sect.

Trust me, I'll never lead you astray.

RCP is my first website everyday. I agree on the A:B presentation of articles is beneficial. I find the biggest thing is the use of arguments best described as "straw-man' type. Simplifications or not taking the best arguments from the otherside to attack is what i see mostly.

Labels are a name game.

They can make something as simple as "conservative" synonymous with evil something with a long history of brutality like "socialism" and equate it with positive government for everyone.

So call them what they are "domestic enemies" and "enemies of the Constitution", still won't make a lick of difference, people who support antifa know what they are, people who equate conservatives with nazis know what agenda they are promoting just as the KKK knew what they are doing.

The real problem is HALF of this country knows they are supporting quasi communism and they agree with it because they will mostly benefit and HALF of this country would gleefully put the other half of this country into gulags if given the opportunity because they think true equality is racist, sexist or whatever. They want special consideration for special groups and they don't have a problem with that idea.
