trying to decide on a good 1-4 scope for a 11.5 in upper. my budget is 400-500. thinking 1-4 is shorter than 1-6. so far Steiner P4Xi 1-4 is first in the running. should i look at anything else ? thanks

In your price range vs. quality- I think you nailed it with the Steiner.

I just bought the px4i for my 11.5.had it out with snow on the ground and the dot is daylight bright. It has good glass but I don’t think it’s as good as my acog. For the money I think it’s a great buy.

I just put this on a 12.5 and really like like it. It only weighs 11.5 oz and has the motion sensor activation. Good eye relief and glass. I got the one with capped turrets. $465 at optics planet.

I have a Bushnell Elite 1.25X4 and it's pretty nice for the money it cost. They don't make it anymore.

O/P I would just drop the coin on the Steiner. It's getting hard to find a 1X4 anymore and we all just don't need 1X6 or 1X8. And we don't need to pay the price for them either.

I enjoy the similar to ACOG reticle, and the dot is very bright.

Just to throw another option out there, check out SWFA

I would go Steiner. Another option would be Burris XTR2 1-5 that is in your price range. Have other reticles and styles as well. These are built like a tank, but they did just announce the XTR 3. Not sure when those will be out though

Garand Thumb had the Steiner and said he was going to do a review but never did.

I don’t have this one. But a lot of folks I trust on optics gave it a thumbs up. I have an older TR24 as a 1-4, and it’s still working quite well for my uses.

I have an XTR 2. great scope. would love to see a XTR 3. Steiner is an 1in shorter and going on 11.5 in upper i thought it would be a better fit.

how close are the Burris xtr2's to a true 1 power?

Very. I like the retical a lot. If Steiner had the same retical I would not even think about and get one. It's a precision eotec.

I’ve had an SWFA 1-4 SS for a little over a year. Probably could do without exposed turrets on a 1-4, but I like it a lot and think the reticle is well thought out.

As others have said, it is close, but it is noticeably not 1x.

It is also about 1/2 pound heavier than some of these other options. I like mine for what I'm using it for, but wouldn't want to carry it around for hours if you know what I mean.

Mind me asking where you purchased?

Oddly, Midway and Brownells show this scope as discontinued by the manufacturer. I don’t think that’s the case, but...

Thanks.

Order from dsgarms for best pricing on them or call cameraland and talk to doug. He does a lot over the phone that manufactures don't know about. Very helpful and informative to talk to.

Dsgarms saw the demand for the steiner go up so they raised the first responder price to $500 without mount.

Well I still have not had time to go to the range. Did mount it on the 11.5 upper and it's truly great marriage. Points perfect excellent balance. Is it true 1power no but it's such a minor difference that it doesn't bother at all. I am R handed L eye dominant. On 1 power I can use both eyes open no problem.

never posted an up date. Besides the Steiner i ended up with a Burris XTR also. Zeroed Steiner Absolutely great scope . But regrettably I about to send my Steiner back to the manufacturer the brightness does not change between settings . they told me to try a new battery but that did not help. Got a scope mount for Burris will test drive it hopefully this weekend . Before I send Steiner I will check them side by side for glass clarity.

I'm curious to hear your opinion on the glass clarity. These are both good values, in my opinion.

I've been wanting to put a low power variable optic on my 12.5 BCM for a while. I currently have irons and an MRO mounted on it and can get consistent hit at 300 yds so I'm really curious to see what it will do with magnification and quality ammo.
Been seriously considering a trijicon 1x8. If it ends up being too much scope I can just put it on another rifle.

That would be interesting. I'll be curious to hear at what distance the magnification is more than that short barrel can utilize.

Interesting. I have a Trijicon Accupower 1-8x28 mounted on one of my Sig 516 16 rifles. It is an excellent scope that I really like. But, it is big and HEAVY. It reeks of high quality, but it may indeed be more than you want for a 12.5 SBR. Might want to take a look at a Trijicon Accupoint 1-6x24 instead. Still highly regarded, but a lot lighter.

Trijicon lists the Accupower 1-8 as 25 oz, while the Accupoint 1-6 is 19.2 oz. I find that difference noticeable when on top of a rifle.

Personally, I like an SBR to be light and handy.

Some ppl just think 'overall weight', but a heavy optic up top can affect the overall balance of the rifle, especially for lateral movement - ie, as you transition L/R and stop, the top of the rifle wants to keep moving.

I found it very noticeable on my SCARs with the higher top rail and keeping optic weight @20oz helps prevent it.
