I thought these had gone the way of the dodo, but evidently they're still being made (el cheapo Barska linked below). Brownell's has just come out with their version, which sold out pretty quickly. If I was to get one, it would probably be the Brownell's model.

Seeing as how these are mounted pretty high over the bore axis, is/was overall accuracy an issue?

Damn.. That's some 80's era approach. Accuracy wouldn't be an issue. Picking a zero and figuring out where the bullet might go at every other distance is the pain.

Some Chicom company called Hammers also makes one. Probably made in the same factory as Barska.

Dad has an original colt optic on his 20" pre ban colt he bought ages ago. Wish he still had his ffl, but unfortunately he had it while we were growing up and not grown with jobs and money to blow.

Being an old guy who was around and used carry handle optics when they were the only answer, in my experience accuracy is not an issue. Learning the offset is the key....just like current flat top mounts but it's even more vital as it is more pronounced, especially at close ranges.

Like anything else it can be done, you just need to invest the training time.

Have you seen the stats suggesting 50,000-180,000 rounds were fired for each VC killed in Vietnam? Scope dope probably wasn't important when that optic was developed.

The brownells mount was marketed to the retro build crowd.

A lot of people are moving toward higher scope mounts...

Was the optical quality any good in the old colt 3x and 4x scopes? I’ve been thinking about picking one up for a retro build.

Will have to get dad's out and get a look at it. He was an ffl during the 1994 ban and picked up a few prebans.
