Using the larger aperture allows more light around the front sight post. Also, the Trijicon (http://www.trijicon-inc.com/User/parts/products1.cfm?PartID=36&back_row=2&categoryID=7) front runs about $60 direct from Trijicon, street price is less.

Every serious-use rifle should have a light on it. No argument.

The MaTech is sub-optimal for use at actual fighting distances in actual fighting circumstances. Better choices are the LMT, LaRue, Troy, and MI. They all feature an 0-2 type aperture for close range/low light use. They are also the most favored BUISs by serious users. Take that however you want to.

An RDS or MRD will work in even the lowest lighting. Combined with a white light they are the best solution to low-light problems that fall outside the use of IR lasers and NODs.

I will echo the sentiments of those here. If you have a long gun for anti-social purposes you should have a quality functional light on it. Something as simple as a Surefire G2 with one of the various mounts out there on the market would be sufficient. I believe that you can get both for about 80.00 or so.
