This is a great article that dives into the recruitment and radicalizing of anarchist and nihilist types to conduct these mass shootings. While the test of the world is appalled by these shootings the guys in chat rooms are cheering it on, publishing pre-written manifestos, and spreading hate literature.

Seems to me by the very nature of being a nihilist, they'd be terrible anarchists. And conversely anarachists would be pretty terrible nihilists. I think this is another case where people don't fully understand the words and definitions they may define themselves by, kind of how socialists who want "legal weed" delude themselves into believing they are libertarians.

Anarchists are generally going to be opposed to any philosophy that might qualify as a belief system.

Nihilists wouldn't engage in the pointless exercise of practicing anarchism because what would be the point?

But I guess if social democrats don't understand that they are actually espousing marxist / lenin communism most of the time then anyone may call themselves anything.

Trump should declare that he practices evolutionary feminism. He should actually copyright the word and the movement and then declare all who oppose him to be enemies of evolutionary feminism.

I don’t know what the link or a bowl have to do with Nihilism and anarchy.

Styer- Nihilists have a long history of violence. My point of reference on them is from studying Russian literature. I think you’re taking a little too literal translation of the idea of “nothing“. It Is more that they aren’t unencumbered by any kind of moral code, don’t believe in the worth of anything, and therefore have no real stake or moral inertia.

I think narcissistic nihilist is a perfect label for these candy ass shooters. When you consider that they want to go out in a blaze of glory but then where ear protection kind of seems like they aren’t really in for the full hurt. When it comes to nihilist I always think of The Joker from his Keith Ledger portrayal, where he is described as being someone who just wants to see the world burn. To me that’s what modern Nihilist are all about. Throw in narcissism, and you have someone who has thrown away all modern and traditional value systems and has become an affect their own God.

So now we need to tighten up on our free speech/freedom of association privileges as well as our gun privileges?

It's for the children....

Why does this make me think of a joke: A nihilist and a terrorist walk into a bar. The bartender says, "Which one of you is which?"

I didn't mean to infer that anarchists and nihilists were the same. More that the 4 Chan and 8 Chan recruitments are focusing on them.

4Chan and 8Chan really cannot be to blame every time some lunatic that posted on there once, maybe twice, shoots up a place.

Yeah there is some terrible, manipulating people on there for sure, but damning the entire thing is not good IMO

The fact that you called it a "chatroom"(chatrooms havent been a thing since the 90's) highlights a lack of understanding of internet culture.

If you think shitposting and trolling is a form of recruitment then I dont know what to tell you. Blaming messageboards is like blaming guns.

Its not like these mass shooters simply use whatever medium is available to post their manfesto or anything. Its like blaming facebook for streaming the Christchurch massacre.

Guess what every mass shooter in the last decade had a facebook thus facebook radicalizes new mass shooters right? Thats the logic train you are following here.

This. ****ing Mongolian Spear-Fishing board is now a "recruiting ground for radicals."

LMFAO!

Hoy! If you say things like that that make us suspect you of something we have an obligation as internet participants to take action.

I'm not new to the internet. I know internet culture and what shitposting and trolls are. I also never blamed 4 Chan and 8 Chan for this. I'm sorry the user of the term chatroom got under your skin, I was trying to figure out what to call those websites so that people who dont know what they are will have am idea of what the article is saying.

But if you dont think that terror organizations use these mediums to recruit and radicalize then I don't know what to tell you.

Here they go blaming everyone but the shooter for what happened. Now we gotta blame 4chan, 8chan, and while we're at it we might as well blame Jackie Chan.

I wasn't talking about anybody on this forum. I was talking about the media. Some news show on the radio this morning spent 10 minutes speculating about how these message boards were contributing to the problem.

But we wouldn't want to ever admit that these guys that do these things would do them because they've got a screw loose and not because of some message board,or if their weapon has a brace, or if video games make people go nuts, or if it's a false flag, etc. Sheesh--just admit that some people are just gonna go apeshit because they go apeshit.

ISIS and the Aryan Brotherhood alike actively recruit from the Cotillion forums.

Marginalized, disaffected people with mental imbalances do tend to gravitate towards extremist groups. It's just a fact. Transnational terrorist groups count on it and actively recruit them. The same can be said for domestic hate groups. Yet as we can amply see, it's the loner type who can't even successfully assimilate into these domestic extremist groups who go lone wolf and commit these attacks. Even Timothy McVeigh was so extreme he was kicked out of the Michigan Militia and THEY called the FBI to say he was crazy.

The problem with the internet groups is anonymity. You can say crazy things and no one's there to look you in the eye, see the insanity and propensity for violence and call the cops to warn them about you. Even when they do, it's just that much harder to establish that you're crazy dangerous and get a psych hold on you. :(

I disagree.

Places like 4chan with their anonymity are often times THERAPEUTIC. Sometimes people just need to bitch and vent. A lot of times people aren’t encouraged to do anything extremist or illegal. Go onto /k/ or /pol/ and talk about shooting up a place. You will be called a fag and told how retarded you are. As well as being dismissed as a try-hard.

Anonymity is a right that people are far too quick to relinquish in that sisyphean goal of “doing something about it”

Plus anonymity is a way to talk about things to other people without that bias or awkwardness. It’s literally no different from the BBS systems of yore.

And not necessarily “bad” things. Just shooting the breeze, talking about anime, sports, or whatever.

You can be faceless, genderless, raceless, and nationless. The internet was the last frontier of benevolent anarchism where people could come and go as they please without picking a side. Just common interest as a point of unification.

Having to ascribe government ID and regulation to the last frontier of truly free speech is the very antithesis of liberty.

It’s literally like people going up to Johann Gutenberg and saying “OI! You got a loicense for that printing press?!”

In fact the internet is how people make real friends that otherwise they would never have met.

Sometimes people are alone with their thoughts and shitposting a little leads to commiseration that otherwise would have gone unfulfilled.

My rights simply trump your dead, your feelings, and your concepts of what is “best”

Ever see Escape from LA? It wasn’t as good as EFNY but that one girl made a point. Yeah it’s dangerous anarchy but at the same time you can eat meat, have a smoke, and speak your mind.

I DO NOT want to live in some Demolition Man future where everything is grey, bland, and without meaning.

A lot of people here have been or are soldiers or police. None of you can tell me you took the job out of being a flag waver or to “make a difference”. Hell no. Not with a straight face.

You took it because you were young, wanted to test yourself, and wanted a life less ordinary. With risk. You may have aged out to where you go on about “kids these days” but that is so boomer and hypocritical.

Naw, I will take my chances with dangerous, sometimes fatal liberty over a peaceful and placid tyranny

Maybe, MAYBE, doing the something that everyone keeps clamoring for means doing the exact opposite of what everyone keeps clamoring for.
