View Full Version : Where to get 5.45x39 barrel and bolt

I realize that I'm a little late to the game, but I want to assemble a 5.45x39 AR15. In addition to my 5.56x45 chambered AR15's, I also have built 7.62x39 and 6.5 Grendel. I purchased a 5.45x39 marked lower receiver and was lucky enough to have an upper receiver that's virtually a perfect finish match to it. I did some searching, but can't find a barrel and bolt. Any ideas where I can get them?

Rubber city has bolts.

Barrels are pretty far and few .

Do NOT get a nitrided barrel if you can avoid it. It doesn't play well with Wolf/Tula/whatever steel-cased ammo and extraction (unless you're fond of beating spent cases out of your chamber).

Thanks for the tip. I wouldn't have known that.

I think M&A Parts has complete uppers and I believe Green Mountain Barrels has barrels. Edit: Looks like maybe just the barrel blanks. Edit: https://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/barrel-parts/rifle-barrels/ar-15-m16-5-45x39-barrels-prod64583.aspx

one of my best groupers ever in 5.56 is a Voodoo 16" gov't profile.

I don't recommend it. As someone who burned thru 2 5.45 bbls it's not worth it anymore. Unless you have a stack of 7n6 spam cans somewhere.

I wouldn't shoot it enough to burn through a barrel. I'd just like to have it in my collection to go along with all the other AR15 chamberings that I have.

There are currently a few DI uppers for sale on GunBroker.

Adams Arms also still has piston uppers available, and on sale:

What about a wall, with a small opening as a doorway, some windows, and little turrets- like a little fort made entirely of stacked tins of ammo?

I thought you didn’t like 5.45 anymore? I, myself, do have a huge stockpile of 7n6. I have a love-hate relationship with 5.45.

Nothing is left but indoor ranges and they won't let me use that ammo.
Here's 5.45x39 copper jacket.

Problem solved. I'm sure you could get good money for that 7n6. Think of it as rotating your inventory.

Stop being so logical. If I thought that way I wouldn't be looking to build a 5.45x39 AR15.

Funny and so true. That's what happens when you try to turn a collection in to an armory. BTW, the particular receiver set that I got for this 5.45x39 build actually has a lower receiver that's marked 5.45x39. I also have a 6.5 Grendel AR15 and a 7.62x39 AR15 that are both marked as such on their lower receivers.

Those who don’t miss 5.45 uppers have no heart. Those who seek their return have no brain.

Kinda cheeky but unless you literally bought crates of the 7N6 during the heyday then you are chasing the dragon.

I like 5.45 but not that much.

Same, 7n6 was a smart round to stockpile when it was cheap.
Not as accurate as even cheap Federal or Wolf Gold .223 but a fun round.
It’ll be a while before I burn thru the last tin of mine but even at today’s prices I wouldn’t sell it.

Would like to put another carbine or pistol upper together but parts are few and far between these days. Can’t remember the last 5.45x39 barrel I’ve seen.

I’ve not heard of issues with melonite or nitride barrels and 5.45x39 extraction. Anyone else? I thought all the Adams Arms barrels were nitride, not heard of issues with those.

BTW if anyone is thinking of a pistol build, Moriarti Arms has a pistol length upper w/stainless steel barrel for $350 plus $125 for their BCG.

I was finally about to find a 5.45x39 barrel at Model 1 Sales. It's chrome lined and appears to be pretty decent. I bought a bolt and enhanced firing pin from Red X Arms. Finally, I ordered an Osprey Defense gas piston conversion from Optics Planet. It includes the carrier. I already had most of the remaining small parts. I'll let y'all know how it turns out.
