View Full Version : Stgw 90 (SIG 550-1)
I’ve had a Swiss Stgw 57 (SIG 510) for some years now, so it was only logical that I also get the successor, the Stgw 90 or SIG 550-1. Plenty of those milsurp rifles available here in Switzerland

Then I installed an adjustable iris (06-2.2 mm)

Damn , I think these are the most realistic, well made, assault rifles in the world.
Wish we could have them, but realistically that will never happen.

Very nice thread.
A stupid question about Swiss gun ranges and service long arms. In all of the pictures I have seen, everyone is shooting from prone. Can you also shoot offhand as well?
I remember handling a Sig 550 in the early 1990s at a gun show. I think it was either $8k or $9k. I remember at the time thinking that I would have to sell every gun I owned to be able to afford it, and except for the loss of a few handguns to CCW, I thought it would be worth it.

Which Sigs are those and do they come with the rail on the receiver?
You will have to forgive me, I don't follow the Sig rifle scene.

I wish that these rifles were built in the U.S. with Swiss quality and standards.
What about sig 550a1?
Was that close?

PE90 and a 551 SWAT. The rails are B&T rails and removeable.

Began life as a 556 receiver with some 550 stuff cobbled on to it. The difference between Swiss SAN and SIG USA is pretty much the difference between Colt and Olympic Arms. The US SIG 556 is probably one of the greatest disappointments of the last 20 years. The ACR got closer to the Masada rifle.
No not the butcher bullshit 556
The 551A1..the closest US made one that used Swiss mags not Ar mags.
That one I was told was an exact clone.

It was a standard 551 that had a muzzle extender to make it non NFA. I had Estes Adams fit a Swiss 551LB (thanks JoshNC) to it.

Since we're showing off our toys, top to bottom:
Swiss Arms SG551LB
Swiss Arms SG751 SAPR with 17.8" barrel
Sig USA 556 Classic SBR
Sig USA 556 Classic
Swiss Arms SG553R

Again, it was a US SIG 556 receiver where they swapped out the lower for a Swiss lower and subbed out the furniture for swiss. The receiver and the barrel are from a US SIG 556. It isn't anything close to an exact clone.

They actually didnt have real Swiss lowers either. They were made to resemble Swiss lowers and did use Swiss mags. They were countoured differently and did not have moveable trigger guards. They were alloy I believe.

Not surprised.
I actually grabbed one of the WCA 551s where they did substitute everything Swiss and it was still mostly crap. Looked cool but the rail was still "screwed on" into a stamped receiver and of course no sling point so you had to attach to the rear of a folding stock which resulted in a mousetrap contraption.
Add on sights were crap / garbage and performance was dismal. Then when people started getting into the QC of random size gas ports and other SIG USA wonders I quickly sold it. Thankfully I was able to snag a "dealer sample" SG551 not long after.

You can have one in the US. JDI is the current SwissArms importer. You have to order it, ie NOT in stock. And you will have to order the 550 “conversion kit” which is a barreled upper receiver with gas system and I think handguard. Then order the lower, stock, bolt group. Will cost you around $4k.

Exeter never made an exact clone of any Swiss 55x rifle. They did import the last batch of 553s with M prefix serial numbers that were originally intended for M&M (CO Gun Sales/Armati, not to be confused with Michaels Machines). JDI ultimately took over import after that.

That’s an interesting marking to the right of the Backwards “B” BP. I cannot say I’ve seen that ever.
