.40 S&W drops bad guys, if you put the bullet in a vital spot.

.357 Sig drops bad guys, if you put the bullet in a vital spot.

Gelatin tests can be found here.

If you’re not packing a G20 in 9x25 Dillon, you’re gonna get kilt in da streetz. .400 Cor Bon is the only acceptable alternative.

Univibe summed it up. On a body in a vital spot, both will kill you. One wouldn’t do it better than the other. Add any other caliber capable of penetrating enough to reach vitals to that list.

The .357 Sig will penetrate hard non porous barriers like metal better than the .40 S&W since it’s faster and the .40 S&W will penetrate porous barriers like wood and brick better due to its greater weight. It’s a wash in my opinion.

Thanks for reminding me. Need to order another barrel now that I have finally got a replacement for the 1911.

The difference is also 0.043" in killing diameter.

It's actually 0.045", but what's that mean for one-shot stops?

Absolutely nothing unless the larger caliber grazed the spinal column or heart causing damage where a smaller caliber would have missed by less than a millimeter.

EVERYTHING

Having 0.045" less killing diameter will get your kill't in the streets.

If you are runing a red dot and might make use of the distance benefit - the flatter trajectory of the 357 might be important to some, in some situations. YMMV

Unless you already own one of them, don't bother with either.

.40SW is pointless and .357 sig is for those who want to be different. For the purposes of self defense, neither do anything 9mm +P can't.

That's kind of where I'm at. I bought my G22 in 1999. It's served me well. I wanted to give the 357 Sig. a try so I bought a G31 barrel for it. Again, both setups served me well.

About 10 years ago I started buying 9mm Glock's. Have a G19, G26 and G34. A G17 will be next. I use Federal HST 124 gr. +p in them.

My G22/31 isn't going anywhere though.

NYH1.

The .357 Sig’s greater speed does better in penetrating thicker metal barriers compared to the .40 or 9mm. Given that they do not make cars with thick metal anymore, the extra speed doesn’t really make much difference anymore now to justify it as using it for an everyday carry for that reason along with the greater recoil and price.

Everyone knows the exxxtra velocity in .357 sig causes hydrostatic shock and results in greater knockdown power.

Carry 9mm. .45, .40, .357 sig, 10mm won't do anything to a bad guy that 9 can't do.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic but if so yes and I’ll also add that a .45 will steal your soul too.

.45 ACP has been known to take limbs off as well.

Not much to debate here.

We need more threads, ".38 vs .357 from a snub", ".380 vs 9x19 from pocket pistol", ".32 vs. .380", and ".32 magnum vs .38 special". :)

.40 is more available and the lighter weight bullets are closer to what the .357 sig can do.
