View Full Version : Rem Oil for AR-15: Not a good idea

I've been using Breakfree LP on the bolt carrier group for ages. It stays where you put it and works.

I ran out and someone gave me a partial bottle of Rem Oil. I generously lubricated the bolt carrier group in the proper manner and fired 100 rounds. When I got home, it appeared that the oil had almost entirely evaporated. Lugs, cam pin, piston rings, exterior contacts of the carrier, all were dry. If I had wanted to fire any more, another generous application would have been indicated.

Breakfree LP or CLP hardly notices 100 rounds.

Your mileage may vary, but no more for me.

I've never had luck with Rem Oil on anything except handguns that don't get run hard.

Have to second your experience with Rem Oil. Tried it quite a few years ago and felt it was sub standard. Had good luck with FP-10 as it seems to stay put and not cook off or dry out. Anyone ever use Frog Lube, getting low on FP-10 and wondering about FL?

I thought everyone here already knew that it was shit.

I used to use Rem Oil on all my firearms. Until I watched it just steam off my AR's while shooting. I now use FP-10 on most of my firearms. I've heard Rem Oil is a fairly good rust preventative though.

Same here, shocked anyone in our circle is using or buying it for lubricating guns with moving parts.

No test Ive seen on the various & many youtube channels that run tests of various things have ever said Rem Oil was good..at anything. Just like everything else from Remington..its pure piss.

I've used it on O/U shotguns, but that's it. It dries out after a day of opening that simple action 50-or-so times.

Well it has been several weeks without a lube thread. :jester:

And yes, Rem oil is shit.

To start a thread on this seems crazy, but there are a lot of Univibe threads just like this. It seems that "discoveries" are made daily to Univibe that have been hashed out on this forum and others for years. A review of his started threads shows that plainly:

The old mantra of "Read more, post less" couldn't be better advice here, and I don't mean this as an insult. Read more, start less threads, and apply the knowledge here to your shooting habits. If you do that, you will have success. Using Rem Oil on an AR15 could have easily been found here as deficient, and would not have needed a new thread on the subject.

I agree, no Rem Oil on ARs (unless there is nothing else available).

I do use Rem Oil on my .22 pistols and rifles with good results, it is light enough to not make the action sluggish and dry enough to prevent unburned powder from sticking all over everything. Rem Oil does appear to dry quicker than other lubes, but I think it relies on Teflon to do the lubricating so the evaporation of the solvent may not matter as much. I also use it on my hunting shotguns and rifles with good results.

I have a spray can of RemOil I use on spare gun parts before I put them away for storage. For various reasons, my favorite oil for lubricating guns I care about are the Wilson Combat oils. Great product in a very good applicator bottle.

RemOil works decently on rimfire match pistols, and that’s about it.

I use rem oil as a penetrant when cleaning ARs and polymer pistols or as a water displacer when storing shotguns (light coat is safe for the wood).

Cleaning ARs and pistols, I spray the rem oil, let it penetrate the crud, use a nylon or other appropriate brush to scrub. Blast it out with polymer-safe gun scrubber until it’s dry, and then re-lube with clp or slip.

I would never ever use rem oil as a lubricant for ARs or pistols however.

I don't watch oil tests on youtube so I'll take your word on it.

Just like everything else from Remington..its pure piss.
I've had great luck with Remington rifles (700's, 7600, 750) and shotguns (870, 1100, 11-87). Had a few issues with Remington made Marlins. The same issues I've had with older Marlin made Marlins.

Anyone ever use Frog Lube, getting low on FP-10 and wondering about FL?I tried FL, mostly to throw a bone to a new gunshop that had opened(now defunct). If youre a clean the guns each time kinda guy I think it would work well. Non toxic smells minty, I like minty. I did the strip and degrease gun rigmarole and then stuck its parts in the oven(great photo op) and applied as directed

After a couple days it doesnt smell minty, no big loss. In my experience if you apply it, shoot, leave it and just touch up on occasion it took on a funky smell seemed to get a bit gummy after a few months.

There wasnt a really good cold spell that year so I didnt get to try it in single digit temps but It didnt give me warm an fuzzies so I ditched it. Alot seemed to migrate down onto the FCG and while I lack the means to measure it, It felt to me like the hammer was falling with a bit less umph. I probably could be accused of over application but there shouldnt be a problem with too much lube.... at least in an AR.
