View Full Version : Walmart Liquidating Ammo

I saw it on social media but wasn’t sure if it is true. I’ve been boycotting them for several months but decided to stop in to see what’s up. 9mm and 45 were wiped out. However they had 1100 rounds of Remington .223 for $7 a box of 50! I sucked up my pride and bought it all. $164 total for 1100 rounds of brass ammo!

Yeah you're at least a couple days late. You got really lucky from what I've seen posted elsewhere to find clearance .223 at this stage. I started 48 hours ago, after 5 Walmarts all I've come away with is some 14 cents per round .40

The are clearing out all handgun ammo and non-Fudd rifle cartridges, everything must go or they turn it over to the government at the end of the month, is what they're saying

That's some pretty cheap ammo. I was happy getting 200-round boxes of Federal .223 and Winchester 5.56 (both 55 gr FMJ) for $49 ea over the last couple weeks, but those have mostly sold out now too.

**** them. They can eat the cost.
Or **** the man- if he gets free ammo- I can get it cheap

Heavy decisions like these tax the soul.

If you think Walmart is the place to 'stock up on ammo', you are doing it wrong.

Ironically only the second time I ever bought ammo at Walmart. The last time was about eight years ago when I bought a couple boxes of 45 to get me through an IDPA match.

I was about to buy 1000 rounds for $254 + shipping just this morning.

You must not be aware of the deals some people got this week.

What is doing it wrong about buying thousands of rounds of Federal 5.56 and .223 for say ~13 cents each?

My local Walmart has Winchester 223 55 brass for $200 per 1000. Also Fed Champion 45acp 230 ball brass $170 per 1000.

I normally boycott the place, but my wife and I were there yesterday because we were shopping for kids bikes for Christmas. Turns out they have a really good selection. After I had the bikes down off the rack my wife started gathering accessories like helmets, knee/elbow pads and lights. So I casually strolled over to the ammo counter expecting to see it wiped out; I was wrong. They had 100 rnd brass 223 for $15, 60 rnd subsonic 300 BLK for $14 and 200 rnd brass 9mm for $17. All marked down to whole dollar prices like DG. The lady said they had been marked down the night before. So I grabbed up 520 rounds in a combination of those three calibers for a little over $80 after tax. What was surprising is that they were out of 357 mag and 44 mag. All the 9mm, 40, 45, 223 and 22 were almost abundant IMO considering the timing.

No, it is not the place to "stock up", but it is not wrong to buy some ammo that I'm going to use at prices resembling the 1990's. (except 300 BLK didn't exist back then, haha)

I missed the .223 at the next Walmart over but got the 1000 rounds of .45 for $185. I reload for 45 but that’s a great price

I did learn that the prices aren't the same at all Walmart stores. I picked up 4 boxes of the 50 round 223 Remington at one store (I should have bought all of them) went to another store today and they were full price.
Oh well.

Went back today and they were wiped out of 223, 300BLK and 9mm. Still had 40, 45 and lots of 380. I have pistol in each of those calibers but I honestly don’t practice with them much nor are they the first gun I’d grab in a situation. If it’s still there Monday I might grab what I can. No shame here.

From what I heard it’s National. The Walmart I went today said they were a day late reducing the prices. Probably why they had so much 45 left

I got lucky this morning. I about didn't go because I figured I missed the deals due to work. Went when I got off work and 9mm and 45acp were wiped out. There was some white box .38sp for $9 a box and some white box .40 for $8 a box. I asked the guy behind the counter and he said he had some .223 we was getting ready to put on the shelves. He had 40 boxes if Tula for $2 a box and 41 boxes Winchester 5.56 for $4 per box. I got 1620 rounds for $260 out the door.

I went by today, and our local place was cleaned out of 9mm and .223/5.56. I thought about stopping by around 8 AM, but waited until noon, knowing that the weekend shoppers were probably going to clear it out. I bought a 200-round box of 180gr Federal aluminum .40 for $25 and a 200-round box of 230gr Winchester .45 for $35. I rarely shoot either caliber, but it will make for cheap range ammo. A guy ahead of me bought 1,000 rounds of .45, 400 rounds of .38, and some other stuff. Another guy was nice enough to let me have the 200-round box of .45 after he had picked a couple of them out. There was plenty of .224 Valkyrie for $5 a box, but nobody seemed to be buying!

When they originally stated they would stop carrying "scary ammo", I was told they would deplete there current supply at regular prices without blowing it out. By chance, I checked the ammo counter last week. I bought out the last of there .45 & .40 at half off (about $7 a box of 50). All the 9mm & .223/5.56 was gone. Still had some .38 spl. & .32 when I left. I just didn't need anymore & was already dropping around $300.

Finally I was in the right place at the right time. I actually hadn't been to the ammo counter in months.

Went ahead and stopped by.

Picked up the final box of .223 55gr Winchester Super X for $9 just to try it out. Meh.
They also had the same ammo in 40gr, but not sure that is tactical enough for me at $15/box.

9mm long gone.

After reading this thread the other day, I hit up all of the local WMs. Walked away with over 3K rounds of 5.56 for under $500. The amount of .300 BO left on the shelves had me contemplating buying it all and getting a new upper. Pricing was just that good.

Checked out two local wallyworlds.

Meh, Winchester & Federal .40 $15/100

Different prices, they were totally annoyed at having to find someone to unlock the counter (gave up waiting at one). Different prices at the two, appears to be manual markdown.

One had fed white box 7.62x51 at higher than online prices even marked down.

Yeah, they are keeping normal pricing for their "hunting" calibers(i.e. 222 Rem, 22LR, 30-30,etc.). I did notice they carry 6.5 Creedmoor that wasn't marked down. I wanted to tell them that scary black rifles are chambered in that too.........

Been shut out at the couple Wally worlds around me. They have .38 wwb for $9 that I may buy if they’re still there after work. Other than that they had .40 and .300 blackout. I didn’t notice if the .40 was a good deal or not. I don’t have any .40 guns and I do not plan on buying any.

The .300 Blackout was unmarked and after waiting for help for 15 minutes I gave up. If it was super cheap I might’ve gotten it and had an excuse to buy a new upper. But typical Walmart ammo no service strikes again. Good riddance.

It was nice being able to buy some range fodder while grocery shopping but now I’ll just get it online and at my LGS. Online is generally cheaper but I like my LGS enough to throw them a bone on a box or two every now and then. I’m happy for you all that scored on the .223 before they ran out. I only wish I was paying attention.

Now I’m wondering how the largest ammunition buyer in the US exiting the market will impact prices. Online was usually cheaper than Walmart even taking into account shipping vs tax, etc.

Will more inventory available to other stores drive the prices down or will the absence of Walmart as a price reference drive it up?

I picked up 3 200 rnd. boxes of 55gn 5.56 discounted I should have got all 6 of them $.17 a round 😁 I normally order online and pick up some at local gun shops too. They did have 9mm and 45 still near me last time I was in the local ones.

I’m guessing little impact on pricing. When did they announce this? Guy at closest Walmart said this is like six months old now. Perhaps a little drop as Federal and others get rid of overstock while they reduce production. Then prices go up a bit.

Federal AE .223 and Federal XM193 arent the same thing.

I would never buy any .223 loading.

The only rounds that someone should be shooting out of a professional duty use AR-15 are LC M193 (which is what XM193 is) or Black Hill MK262

1. Walmart carried both of those rounds, including Federal XM193
2. Not everybody who posts here is solely (or at all) shooting for professional duty use
3. Many who do shoot professionally for duty use are going to have and use duty ammo that is higher performance on target than M193
4. Many who do shoot professionally for duty use will disagree with your opinion that LC M193 is the only thing they should buy.

Oh, please. Derp of the year on a number of levels. Lots of high quality, higher performing duty rounds out there, lots of agencies mandating the use of such ammo, and some of these guys are getting the AE223 at $0.15/round. Do you really think it's somehow so "inadequate" for training use that it's not worth it at HALF the price of 193?

Reminds me of watching our state department of corrections do all of their training with Gold Dot. Thousands of rounds a year at nearly twice the price.

I don’t care about better terminal performance. I care about ammo functioning in the gun.

It is indisputable M193 and Mk262 are at the top when it comes to functioning in a properly gassed Mil std rifle.

Checked my mallwart yesterday out of curiousity. No pistol ammo, no .223 or 7.62x39, but FMJ 7.62x51mm in the military-styled (but civilian market) Federal boxes. I doubt they realize the idiocy. Anyway, .22 rimfire was at fair prices while the remaining mass of hunting ammo was nothing special nor anything I needed.

My local chain sporting goods store has better prices on their routine sales every 1-3 weeks, and mail order is better still, so no biggie.

I haven't bought ammo from WalMart in quite a few years. Living in Oregon, I get my carbine training ammo, Federal AE .223 and XM193 from BiMart. They'll have them on sale several times a year @ $5.69/20. Also Blazer Brass 9mm 115/124 FMJ @ $9.00/50. They're a PNW chain, in ID,WA, and OR, that are employee owned. So I like to spend my money there. So if you're in the region, shop at BiMart. They appreciate the business. Shamelessly plugging a local chain, but what the heck?

As far as reliability goes, I've never had any problems using AE .223 or even PMC .223 ammo in my "amateur" duty guns. Then again both my duty guns are carbine gassed systems, Colt 6920 and BCM Lt.Wt. carbine.
