Father in law told me tonight that he wants to purchase an AK for the new year. I do not know much about AK’s except had a WASR-10 about 10 years ago.

He knows I do not buy cheaper guns anymore and he came to me asking about guns so he knows it won’t be a $500 gun.

With that being said he doesn’t need or want to pay for a Rifle Dynamics or other top tier gun.

What are the middle of the road tiers that are easy to get ahold of?

Something possibly with a modern style rail and able to be adaptable. Able to change muzzle devices and mount a red dot. (He’s in his 60’s and I believe that will help him out).

I’ll second RetroRevolver77’s recommendation. A Zastava PAP M70 would also be a solid choice.

WASR the biggest bang for the buck. ZPAP/Polish middle of the road. VEPR or Arsenal top of the heap.

The WASR I had was $450-$500 new and it was junk. What changed with them? I had canted sights and trigger was crap. Not to mention was extremely loose and rattled.

For an additional fee, Atlantic used to pick out WASR’s that didn’t have canted sights, etc- not sure if they still offer this service.

OP, when I was after an AK, I was able to find a Romanian SAR-1 for $500. My understanding is that they typically run a bit higher than that, but if you can find one for a decent price that would be my recommendation

The best way to buy a WASR is to be able to actually lay eyes on it beforehand.

Consider a VZ58? They are pretty awesome.

This is true for any gun, but it’s a must for AKs. A good WASR will run like a raped ape.

Since they only made 7 of them, I bet it will never enter the market place.

The PTR-32: When you want a 7.62x39 that weighs as much as a 7.62x51.

Not saying that PTD-32s aren’t nice, but if I’m going to carry a gun that heavy, I’d prefer it be a full-power 7.62 NATO rifle.

I’d say the SG553R would take that title. Plus, it’s actually fielded by military/police.

I wonder if the Bren 2 wouldn't also fit the title of, 7.62x39mm Rolls-Royce, especially since GIGN - who could have had pretty much literally anything in 7.62x39 or 300 BLK - went with the Bren 2.

(I'm guessing, and this is just a guess, that they chose the Bren 2 over the 553R because of the straight-in magazines and the bolt hold-open.)

I haven't shot the CZ, but GIGN is a good recommendation.

Could be, but it would be hard to beat the build quality of the 55X series rifles. I’d buy a Bren 2 in 7.62x39, but the magazines are a definite no go for me. The last thing I’d want is another proprietary magazine. If I could get a 7.62x39 that would take AR15 mags, I’d go with it. This is obviously not an issue for GIGN.

I just watched MAC video on on the Bren 2 7.62x39 and since it takes a proprietary magazine, it takes it off the table for me.

I’m guessing so it can slide in like an AR15 magazine instead of rock and lock like an AK magazine.

Does your Glock take Browning Hi-Power magazines?

No?

Why would they do that?

I mean the CZ scorpion was all on it own, but now most new 9mm carbines are adopting it.

I have a 2019 WASR-10 that I take to the range quit a bit and it shoots fine at 50 yards. I bought an AK retaining plate to replaced the Shepard hook and that stopped the trigger rattle.

I did replace the light wood furniture for Romanian stock set which I paid less than $30 for it. I spent more for varnish stripper, stain, and wipe on poly finish.

Beretta ARX100 is the 5.56 Ak that takes AR mags. And made by Beretta.

Adjustable gas port, gas piston, folding, telecoping stock, 6.5 lbs, quick detach barrel, long rail on top, rails on front, ambi EVERYTHING!.

I know it's not a Kalashnikov.

They did make them in 7.62x39 and use AK mags though! For Kazakhstan...
