I managed to lose the right slide release for my full size HK 45. I'm pretty sure I accidentally tossed it along with the newspaper I usually cleaned my pistol on. Anyway I called Hk to get the part. The guy who answered was not particularly friendly. He also said he doesn't have the part. That was his response. He doesn't have the part. So I asked then now what? Do I order it and wait for the part to come in or what? No I have to call back in 4 weeks to see if they have any. Great. Anyone know of any other sources for HK parts like this? I'm guessing I'm out of luck until HK gets them in. I don't see any reason I can't shoot the pistol in the meantime but am still not happy and will take this into account when considering another HK purchase.

Try contacting HKspecialist.net and HKparts.com Gordon and Adam are always a great help. You can also call Travis at HK who is the best direct source to find out about parts. I would suspect they have at least a couple of them around.

I've sent e-mails to the first two but as I mentioned Hk said they didn't have any and didn't know when they would.

Well the two guys I told you about have a lot of parts and access to parts. I would still call HK and ask for Travis. He is the head of the gunsmith department and I have only heard great things about him. I dealt with him over the phone once about a problem with a P7 and he told me how to fix it over the phone. If you were not happy with the guy who answered the phone call back and ask for Travis.

I would also suggest you post this over at HKpro.com , there are a lot of people in the know and may be able to point you to further sources.

One of the mods here and someone at HK hooked me up big time. I won't say who it was but it would not surprise anyone. So thanks very much, you know who you are.

As to HK, I really like their HK 45, 45c and P30 and intended to buy more even though I was uneasy about customer service. Now that I know the parts situation first hand I'm going to have to back off on new HK purchases. In fact today I bought another M&P .45 instead of the Hk 45c I was going to buy. I have not become an Hk hater or anything and I will continue to enjoy the 3 HK's I bought this year. Hopefully once their U.S. factory comes online we can get parts easier and I can reconsider further purchases.

Is a HK handgun THAT much better than a S&W Military & Police to put with that level of bullshit? I don't think so.

I don't think, in fact, that they are better at all.

Then don't buy one. :) I've never had a problem with H&K customer support when ordering parts. I just bought a USP9SD today for my birthday. I looked at the M&P Spec-Ops...but as it turns out S&W screwed up the threading on the barrel so it only works with one or two suppressors. Non-standard threading. Good job guys. :)

I think the relative newness of the HK 45 is part of the issue. Hopefully things will get better with their new factory in the U.S. The problem has been resolved with some help from various people. I think HK's customer service has been improved but is still not where it should be. Here is my take on the M&P and HK 45.

I have a couple of the full size and two of the mid-size M&P's in .45. The fit and finish is not up to HK level but is very good for the price. It sits lower in the hand and that, combined with the beavertail means very little muzzle rise compared to the HK. With the HK I have to be really careful and exercise more trigger control to be accurate with it than the M&P. It's just more work for me to be accurate with the HK than the M&P. The thumb safety on the HK is in my way so I have to make grip adjustments for that and i don't have to do that with the M&P since mine don't have thumb safeties. Smith has done continuous improvements on these pistols so some of the early bugs are gone and the fit, finish, and trigger have gotten better. Plus of course Smiths customer service is great. Since the M&P has been so popular there are lots of accessories available for it and lots of people who do custom work. I don't think you can go wrong with an M&P.
