Have a couple of stripped lowers that I am thinking of building up. Looking at some kind of 16" 6.8. Can anyone tell me the weight of a basic setup without scope? I have a DPMS 308 and it is heavy. Looking for something I could use deer hunting that is not too bad to lug around.

A 6.8mm carbine that is identically configured to a 5.56mm carbine will actually weigh a fraction of an ounce less (barrel wall is thinner). 6.8mm ammo and magazines will weigh slightly more than 5.56mm.

I've been trying to get an idea regarding weight as well. I got rid of my 16" DPMS 308 because it weighed 10lbs with scope and mount, and was basically a 300 Savage wrapped up in an AR costume.

I like the lightweight of my 6920 and would like to duplicate it with a 6.8 upper, but most of the 6.8 barrels seem to have a heavier profile. Plus add on a free float of some type and it could start getting heavy quick. I expect it to weigh more than a 6920, but am just having a hard time estimating a total weight. I may have to create a spread sheet and use manufacturer specs.

I'm thinking that a recon barrel and carbon float tube would make a good hunting rig, but I am still gathering info at this point.

I just wanted to invite everyone here on over to 68forums.com. The people there are dedicated 6.8 users and have been shooting and building rifles for a couple years. A very, very good source of information on all things 6.8!!!:D

Here is a link to the site. You will have to register as it is intended to keep out spammers/porn which is not welcome on any forum I attend and I appreciate that!!!;)

My 6.8 setup (RRA Lower and Basic Stag Upper) weights 7.88lbs with an empty Cproducts 17rd mag, Magpul CTR Stock, ARMS High QD Rings, Low Profile Rear BUIS, and a 4.5-14x Nikon Scope. Total package is just 6.38lb without the scope and rings. I got mine for the same reason, my 308 was too heavy. I really like the 6.8 so far, and it has roughly 80% the energy of the 308 (if they both have a 16" barrel). The combat loads from Silver State Armory can get up even higher...closer to 85% of the .308's energy!

FYI, a DPMS 16" AP4 .308 weights in at approx 8.6lb (without a scope)...quite a difference.

7.88 lbs with BUIS is music to my ears. Is this with a free-float hand guard? My current hunting rig is a 300WSM bolt action that weighs 8lbs with 4-12x scope and rings. My goal is to get a 6.8 under 8lbs for hunting.

The 7.88 lb is the weight with the standard M4 style plastic handguards (non-free float) that come on the 6.8 SPC Stag model 5H uppers. You'd probably be hard pressed to find handguards any lighter...which is why I've resisted changing them out. I believe the Larue Handguards are only slightly heavier (0.74 lbs vs 0.62 lbs for the M4 handguards), but they're expensive. There might be some others as well, Daniel Defense, Troy, etc, etc. I actually have a set of YHM non-free float rails that have a flashlight mounted on them, and I can easily install those if I need the flashlight or want to put my bipod on it...but all of that adds weight, and I just had to stay focused on my goal for the 6.8 and just keep it simple and as light as possible. It's very comfortable even with the weight of the scope, and with the scope off and using the BUIS...it's really handy!
