What barrel does the current/latest production US Military issue
M-16A2 have?

1. 20" Government profile 1/7 twist.
2. 20" Government profile 1/9 twist.
3. 20" HBar 1/7 twist.
4. 20" HBar 1/9 twist.
5. Something else?

The barrel is 20" with a 1/7 twist. Not sure what they actually call the barrel profile as nobody concerns themselves with that in the MIL world. It is heavier than the previous M16A1, but I am not sure if it falls into an HBAR category.

The M16A2 uses a 20" 1/7 Twist govt. profile barrel.

He didn't ask what the newest production M16 was. He asked what the M16A2 barrel configuration is. They are both (M16A2/A4) still being produced and issued. The main difference being that KAC rail system and detachable carry handle.


The newest M16 is the A4 not the A2.

What you described is the Government profile.

Thinner under the handguards and thick from the
front site forward to the flash hider.

The M16A2 is no longer being produced. There are back line troops with M16's however. The M4A4 carbine is the standard arm of the Army and the Airforce while the M16A4 is the standard arm of the Marine Corps.

Just to clear things up, my question was about the M-16A2.

If it's still being used by only one member of the US Military,
then that is the current and latest version of the M-16A2.

Now where to find a barrel in stock?

And you know this how? The M16A2 is still being produced as I saw them at the FN factory in S.C as well as M16A4's. The M4A1 is not the "standard arm" of the Army or Air Force. As a matter of fact there are still plenty of Army units here that have M16A2's and M16A4's and they are active duty. Though they may be wanting to field these as "standard arms" it has not yet happened. I don't know what they Air Force uses as I see only a few of them around here. The Marines are also still issuing the M16A2 in addition to the M16A4. I know this because I was a civilian armorer here in Iraq working on a contract with them in 2005-2006.

Certain units within the USMC also use the M4 carbine as well.
