View Full Version : Leupold VX Freedom 2-7x33 for SOCOM 16
Hi all,
Trying to decide on an affordable ($200 max) scope for my SOCOM 16 CQB. I know leupold has the scout scope line but what about the Leupold 2-7x33 VX Freedom? Would that work mounted on the front rail of the rifle?
If not, what are some quality recommendations in this price range for the SOCOM 16? Thanks.
According to the Leupold specs on the scope you mentioned, it has an eye relief of 3.7"-4.1". It would be too short if mounted on the forward rail. A quick search at Vortex's website came up with the Crossfire II 2-7 x 32 Scout Scope. MSRP at exactly your budget.

Burris has one that you can find in the $300-$400 range.

This is the Scout model VX Freedom

But... scout scopes suck. The idea is based on working around stripper clips, not how terrible the scope works with the sun low behind you.
I would highly recommend you mount something like a 1-4 or 1-6 over the reciever.

If I did that is the VX freedom ideal?

The VX freedom is a good hunting scope for the price and will certainly work very well mounted on the receiver. I don't know if it is accurate to say it is ideal. I really depends what you plan to do with the gun.
If you plan to use the gun for home defense, I would suggest a good red dot or an illuminated low power variable optic (scope) with a low end of 1x as better suited to the role. For example, here is a blemished 1-4 MTAC for $214 - https://www.natchezss.com/blemished-burris-mtac-rifle-scope-1-4x24mm-ballistic-cq-matte.html

I didn’t want a red dot simply because I have two ARs with red dots ready to go as home defense. I don’t have any scopes for long distance shooting, however. That’s why I’d like to get a scope. I’ve seen the Leupold as a popular scope on ARs so I wonder how it holds up on a .308. I also could switch out my Aimpoint PRO and mount it to my Socom and put the leupold on one of my ARs if need be.
I ran a Leupold VX-2 2-7 on an 5.56 AR for quite a while and liked it just fine until I moved scopes around and ended up with a 2.5-10 on the AR. For my eyesight, more magnification is better.
If I did that is the VX freedom ideal?
If you want to mount a magnified scope forward of the receiver only a couple of "scout" specific scopes will work well.
My experience is from when the only scout scope was the fixed power 2.5 Leupold.

If you have any plan to use it for defense, the VXR scout with illuminated dot can be found on sale. Not in your $200 buget sale, but it's a step up on glass plus great (except for the push button control) illumination.

I’ve found this while trying to search the internet. Can anyone confirm if it’s a MK 2 or 6 or whatever Leupold Scope mount? I always thought those mounts were for ARs only?
If this works I would prefer to set up the scope this way as opposed to running a scout style.

That looks like a MK8 mount, it is an AR mount in 34mm.
Several different manufacturers make "extra" cantilever mounts in 1" and 30mm that should work the same.

It's going to be pretty high, plan on getting a chin weld at best. The M14 is not great with any scope mounted above the receiver.
I'd think pretty hard about living with a red dot or scout scope on that rifle. Consider selling it for something more suitable for your needs rather than sinking a bunch of money into you maybe being happy with it.

Understood. I may just use the scope on one of my ARs and put my PRO on the SOCOM. I do have the cheek riser that goes on the stock as well.
