View Full Version : The Venezuelan Navy - not the sharpest tools in the shed

"A Venezuelan patrol boat was sent to intercept the cruise ship Resolute, firing warning shots and ramming it several times.

The cruise ship, built to operate in iceberg-infested waters, suffered only minor damage and sailed to safety while the Venezuelan cruiser sank itself.

No one was reported injured in the scrape."

Reminds me of this classic exchange:

"This is an aircraft carrier of the US NAVY! Alter your course now!"
"This is a LIGHTHOUSE. Your call."

Yep, those Venezuelans taught them a lesson, didn't they?

Last time I saw something that poorly thought out, Argentina had decided to occupy the Falkland Islands.

Jeez. When I saw "Patrol Boat," I was thinking something along the lines of a WWII PT Boat. Nope, this ole boy was in the Corvette/Frigate range of size, and was relatively new and (probably) expensive.

Yeah that's got to hurt.

The Naiguata was built in 2009 by Spain’s Navantia shipyards as a coastal patrol ship and displaced 1,453 tons. The Naiguata was 259 feet long and had a top speed of 22 knots. This ship was also armed with a 76-millimeter Oto-Melara rapid fire deck gun, 35-millimeter Oerlikon Millennium close-in weapon system, and two .50-caliber machine guns.

Karma perhaps?

Excellent outcome nonetheless.

Thats just slightly faster than the 1890s USS Olympia

Yet not sturdy enough to handle an intentional collision with a pleasure ship. The peoples money well spent.

They ought to paint a kill mark on the mast of the cruise ship or fly a pennant with the tonnage sunk written on it. They can advertise this as a once in a life time opportunity to cruise in 5 star luxury on an accused pirate vessel.

I'm no naval combat engagement expert here, but I'd think ramming something that's got considerably more mass then you do is generally a bad idea other than extremis situations, even if you're not aware the ship you're ramming is double hulled monster designed for ice.

WWII South Pacific some amazing stories of US captains ramming Japanese boats as last ditch efforts, but this seems like anyone who figure out that was gonna end badly.

Dictators appoint and promote military leaders based on loyalty and not ability.

Damn, this wasn't a small ship. Is this the right one? Name is the same.

For comparison, WWII Fletcher-class destroyers like Arleigh Burke's DESRON 23 "Little Beavers" in the South Pacific were good for around 31 knots, and aircraft carriers get up to similar speed while conducting flight operations. Typical "cruising speed" for a warship on patrol is about 15 though.

That’s an expensive lesson.

At the risk of being a pedant, a PT is properly classed as a "Motor Torpedo Boat." A TB is historically a small, fast, maneuverable ship whose primary armament is a battery of torpedoes--destroyers were created in response to their threat, then when the TB mission was moved to slower but stealthier submarines the destroyers adapted accordingly. A better term for this particular ship would be corvette.

I'd have to guess so:

This vessel is no longer in service. It is reported to be decommissioned, scrapped or lost.

That gunboat must have rammed it really hard, did you see how it got almost all the way through the paint?!

I like the way you think. There has to be a broom aloft somewhere in order for it to be legit.

And they gotta hoist the Jolly Roger somewhere, too... though that would only invite special targeting by Maduro's jackboots.

You can track the Resolute here although you might need to sign up (yes, I'm a closet boat nerd).
