View Full Version : Need recommendation on AR spring/field repair kits

Can someone recommend field repair kits, such as spring kits, pin kits, extractor parts kits, etc. for the AR? I know, for example, that CMMG sells a bunch of these. What I don't know is the quality of the parts contained therein.

It could be as far as quality goes a spring is a spring is a spring, but I doubt it. So I'm asking, what do you folks use?

A lot of the "field repair kits" I have seen are a bit dubious in my opinion... I saw one once that had a pistol grip screw in it? I mean come on, can you imagine that?

"hey... my grip fell off and I can not find the screw guys!"

Good way to get what's left of your gear split up by the survivors... but I think some stuff is in there to increase the "parts count" and nothing more.

For me, field repair items are a complete bolt, cam pin, maybe an extra extractor spring/insert/oring and that little sonofabitch pin... of course you do want to make up a "hero box" (so you can someone else's hero) - start with a small tackle box and work up to collecting all of the small parts that you can change out while sitting on the tailgate of a truck... some tools, loctite and stuff and you should be set.

It is a drag to pick some of the stuff up piece at a time, shipping is more than what you are buying -- so pick up a couple of new mags each time you order some small parts to take the sting out of it :)

ETA: My idea of field repair parts are those that are with you anytime you have the rifle.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I guess I'm looking at putting together 2 different types of kits. One would be a field kit of small parts that could take a weapon down if they broke, e.g., an extractor spring. Probably could fit all these in a 6"x4" case.

Another would be the "tackle box" full of enough small parts to build a lower from a stripped receiver, etc. I dunno if I consider a complete bolt a "small part" but I suppose it wouldn't hurt. Better to have it and not need it, as they say...

BTW, it looks like most of the links on the snipersarmory.com home page are broken. Is that by design or from neglect? ;)

By complete bolt, I mean just that... not the whole assembly, but the bolt, gas rings, extractor, ejector, pins, springs, insert and oring -- fits in a pistol grip...

as for the website, the "public" side of it is new and I need someone that is a web geek :(

That is its launch per se on the internet... something that we avoided in the past, but it seems is a necessary evil today.

CProducts sells some, they are listed in the "Kits" section of their site.

GreenMtnTac,

I believe that you posted in the other thread that you have a genuine Colt's. Ken and Tina Elmore at S.A.W. (http://www.specializedarmament.com/) sell spare parts kits that are not listed on their site (or at least didn't used to be). Here's mine along with a few other spares in a box I got from The Container Store (http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=242&PRODID=72047).

Bushmaster makes a decent "Field Repair Kit"

http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/lowers/afield.asp

You don't have to actually buy this one, but it gives you a good idea of what you should have. It's a decent reference if you prefer parts by another manufacturer.

ive been looking for one of these as well.

ive seen DPMS,Brownells,and Bushmaster.

so the Bushmaster set(from Midway)....

This kit includes 14 common parts that may need to be replaced when out in the field and you need them repaired immediately. Includes: an AR-15 extractor, 2 extractor springs, 2 extractor spring inserts, disconnector, set of 3 bolt gas rings, extractor pin, firing pin, 2 firing pin retaining pins, bolt cam bin, hammer spring, trigger spring, ejector/safety detent spring, magazine catch spring and an A1 disconnector spring.

this is a good template?...any ommisions or unnecessary filler(less important)?

this and a complete bolt be GTG(i know there would be some redundancy)?

i dont suspect the actual bolt carrier is likely to fail?

i was also curious on how likely a gas tube is to need replacing(although its probably not a "field repair")?

If you still need a webguy PM me. I have someone that does good work and works relatively cheap.

Each of my rifles has a spare parts package that goes wherever the rifle goes.
This is the "tackle box" that I keep around...
