I did a couple of searches but found nothing. How hard is it to change out a standard trigger guard on a DPMS lower to something that I can use with gloves in the winter?

Very simple as long as you have the right tools. I changed my first one without a roll pin punch and it was much harder than it should have been.

1. Purchase trigger guard and new roll pin.

2. Put some lube in the hole where the pin is and let it sit.

3. Using the correct punch and a brass hammer tap out the roll pin. Push in detent and remove.

4. Re-install new trigger guard in reverse order.

I may be over simplfying but it really is not difficult to do with the correct tools.

Just be sure to support the ear on the lower as you knock the roll pin in or out, it's actually pretty easy to snap it off.

How does a roll pin punch differ from a standard punch?

Now that I have the handy instructions and video any suggestions for a new guard? Is the magpul guard a viable option or should I go with something that swings down to open the trigger area up?

I highly suggest using the Magpul triggerguard.

Roll pin punches have a little knob in the center to keep the punch centered in the roll pin, normal punches are flat and tend to move around the roll pin

Brownells has been kind enough to post some instructional videos:

Just make sure you get rollpin punches that are hardened. Last week I picked up a set of roll pin punches from Sear's .... I used the 1/8" punch ONE time on a trigger guard pin and it was badly chewed up. I'd say after one more pin it would be worthless.

I'd get this set and be very happy I think .....

Hovey,

The key is using Kroil or other lube first to loosen the pin. It makes the job much easier.

This was a new lower build ..... I might guess a little lube would of also helped on the new install. Thanks.

Yeah I didn't know about the lube, and it was a bitch installing the magpul guard on my 6920. I did support the ears though.

I highly encourage you to look into the MIAD grip which comes with the trigger guard and can be adjusted using the removable panels. I am not a salesman but it is probably the best set up in the market.

Thanks I will look into that. I didn't know the MIAD came w/trigger guard. I'm going to upgrade to the MIAD grip sometime in the near future anyway.

I didn't know the MIAD came w/trigger guard.

If it matters to you at all, the full MIAD comes with a plastic trigger guard as opposed to Magpul's aluminum one that you buy a la carte. I did not really consider this when I decided to buy full MIAD grips. I wound up subsequently ordering aluminum trigger guards strictly as a matter of personal preference.

The three separate roll pin kits (starters, etc.) cost quite a bit. Which sizes of each are needed for the trigger guard and for any other parts on most rifles?

I doubt you'll even need the roll pin holders. You can get a away with just using the roll pin punch set.

The trigger guard came off my Bushmaster easy enough but the LMT is really tight.

Trigger guard is 1/8 and the bolt catch 3/32. Gas tube is 5/64. I highly recommend not re-using roll pins.

i still prefer the aluminum magpul trigger guard over the MIAD one. i'm running both right now.

the MIAD integrated trigger guard is super useful if you have a snapped off "ear". i don't, but if you did, it seems like your only option for a trigger guard. its also the easiest install with only a set screw and a grip screw.

the reason i prefer stand alone trigger guard is because its aluminum (duh) and because some people don't like a A2 style finger rest on their grip...and if you have the MIAD w/trigger guard, you need to live with the finger rest or dremel it off.

kind of a minor gripe i guess. i like the aluminum guard for aesthetic reasons too, which is kind of stupid, but it just looks really nice...i cant help it.

either way..magpul makes nice stuff.

I got the MIAD basic, which didn't come with the trigger guard piece. Anyone know where it can be purchased separately?

Paul, one of the nicest guys in the industry, has them in stock and BRAVO Co. USA

You might find them listed elsewhere but when he says its in stock it is and his timeliness and shipping are right on.

on the drive punches and/or roll pin punches, they come in "long" or standard. will the standard size be long enough to remove trigger guard or FCG pins?

Scroll down that page to part # 43167 - I used the 1/8" from that set and it works perfectly. FYI, I bought that set for $9.99 at a Sears store for and the handles are coated in red paint. I am fairly sure these are standard size - regardless, they are the perfect size for maintaining control over the punch when hammering it. Use plenty of Break Free CLP when removing and installing the roll pins!

I would argue that the gun bubble is very sane.

+1

Love those MagPul trigger guards.

I used a brass punch, and was careful to make sure it was centered so not to hit the lower when removing. Once got it started it's easy. Deformed a bit of my punch tip since it was tight fit, but that's easy to fix on a dremel.

Well, the instructions say to put it in with a 1/16" Allen wrench.

He's asking for the screw diameter and thread size. I would tell you but don't have the proper tools to tell you.

Why don't you contact Magpul. They might send you one for free. They have good customer support. Some of the staff frequent some of these gun forums so you might be able to IM them.
